So our dog just had 7 puppies last night!

These a english springer spaniels...
Normally you would dock the tail but what is interesting is the last litter we one puppy with a really short tail. this time we had two with even shorter tails.

Mom and pups are doing just fine!

So what are you planning on doing with them later?

Thank God they weren't born in Vietnam.

No pictures of cute newborn puppies?

Maybe he should wait until they can open their eyes and run around and maybe then he could treat us to a youtube video of them.

We lost one of the puppies about an hour ago. It was born with a cleft palate (no roof of the mouth) so it couldn't suckle.

We raise them for sale. Very good good dogs with sweet temperment. Also good bird dogs with easy to train soft mouth. They are usually home bodies and when when you let them out the door they don't go far.

Very spotty! 3 weeks until they're cute?

Tail cutting is an unpleasant custom. Never got the idea.

No treatments for cleft palate?

if the newborn can't suckle it's not gonna last long enough to get treatment


And yeah, **** breed standard, guess if you're an actual licensed breeder you gotta do what you gotta do, but pretty stupid otherwise.

So Cute!!! Back when I was a kid my mother's dog had puppies nearly every year and she always took pictures of them.

The idea with docking was that depending on the dogs job a tail could be a problem.
Tails can get degloved or broken. The original hunting job this breed had called for a docked tail because of the possibility of a broken tail.
This is also why we remove dew claws on dogs that range it can get hung up on logs etc. while hunting but on on diggers.
So spaniels get dews removed but rat terriers don't because they use them for crawling and digging in burrows for rats.

I have had a dog that had dew claws and it got torn off running through the forrest one day.

My preference is for a tail but we are selling these as AKC registerable so kinda stuck till the AKC changes their mind.

Nope no treatments for cleft palate we would have had to force feed the pup for 8 weeks until the mouth was big enough for surgery.
Even then got a 50/50 chance it makes it and on top of that there might be other things wrong with it.
The vet said it was pretty hopeless.

At least it used to have a purpose, but nowadays...
Interestingly, that Wikipedia article says it's now banned in various countries.

Well, too bad on the pup.
I guess that's the idea with litters. When we used to have kittens, it wasn't uncommon for the runt of the litter to not survive.
