My malformed duty gene keeps me sweeping SPAM out of here even though former bit-twiddler Morphine has absolved me of such duties.

I drop in occasionally out of habit, only to find that most of the noise is Vrock and Waco arguing in the back of the room. Sometimes I read it. Sometimes I just leave.

Same here, but lurking is perhaps a bit of a strong word. Checking for pulse might be almost for of a thing...

Prior to today I hadn't logged in for so long that I couldn't remember my password. Then again I had used the same password here for nearly 20 years, so it's possible that my account had been p0wnd.

Every few months or so, I peek in and see if the corpse is still shambling.

Last time I looked, it looked like a small community left here, even if the site was a dead site walking.

This time, I don't know why I was compelled to specifically check here - I usually talk about this stuff with a group of friends anyway, and have already done so - but I figured I'd see if anyone was talking about the implications of Windows 11 and some of the things Microsoft announced. I can't even remember the last time I checked the forums for something that wasn't The Back Porch, but I figured I'd check anyway.

...and I'm posting in this thread because I figure I might as well? It almost feels like the next time I check, there may not be a forum to post to, and I spent quite a few years here.

Edit: Hah, looks like I was more active in the technical subforums than I thought, but it's been quite a while since i've posted here - when TR was under the current management, I think, but when there was still actual content being posted.

I think the primary goal of W11 is to make it impossible to install Windows without having TPM activated.
That's probably why it's a new Windows. All the other stuff could have been done by an update.
As a matter of fact: for W10 owners it's much like a normal update, because it's for free.
It feels to me like the W98 version of W10.
It might be a good OS, and the odd idea of putting some of the buttons in the middle can even be changed to the right, but their will be problems for people who haven't activated TPM (fTPM for AMD, PTT for Intel).

A helpful former gerbil linked to the WhyNotWin11 utility for Windows 11 compatibility checking:
https://www.xda-developers.com/tool-tel ... indows-11/

Other than the need for folks to enable PTT or fTPM in their motherboard's UEFI BIOS, there are questions of TPM 1.2 vs. TPM 2.0 and also why only Core 8xxx Coffee Lake and newer Intel processors are supported. Skylake (6th generation), Kaby Lake ("7th gen"), Kaby Lake Refresh ("7th gen"), Coffee Lake ("8th gen"), Coffee Lake Refresh ("9th gen") and Comet Lake ("10th gen") all use the Skylake microarchitecture on 14nm while the aborted Cannon Lake was the 10nm shrink of Skylake. From a technical perspective, all of these processors should have the same compatibility. This smacks of an arbitrary marketing decision.

That suggestion list is only for OEM partners. Microsoft wants to prevent OEM partners throwing Windows 11 on hardware that cannot handle it. On paper, they should all work with Retail versions of the Windows 11 of software provided they have Secure Boot and TPM 2.0 or equivalent support. The only thing is that Skylake mostly lacks is SGX which might be a requirement for Windows 11 but Microsoft hasn't confirmed this yet.

I wonder how W11 will handle existing RAID 1 installations, if TPM is not enabled yet.
I think I'm stukc with W10.

RAID configuration shouldn't matter as long as the parition on that RAID was formatted with GPT and Secure Boot is supported by UEFI on the system in question. Windows 11 completely drops MBR and x86 (IA32) support.
