Hey all! Haven't been in here for an age, surprised anyone at all is still around given the mess on the front page.

So, erm, where did everyone go? I went to Anandtech for a while, but they barely seem to post PC hardware reviews any more, it's all deep-dive silicon manufacturing geekery, enterprise stuff, and mobile phone reviews. More recently, it seems like I can't even access the site from a central-american IP any more.

I can't put my finger on it exactly, but Tom's Hardware never quite feels right to me... there's reviews, but it somehow feels a bit surface-level and generic. Can't work out if they're just carefully dressing up corporate press releases with benchmarks or if there's genuine depth there...

Are there any lesser-known website gems out there that aren't "and now a word from our sponsors!"? Or has the Youtube "hyperactive dude mugging into the camera in every thumbnail" era fully taken over all of tech journalism?

Anand left Anandtech.

Tom left Tom's Hardware.

I check here once in a blue moon (today is a blue moon, apparently). Anyone who didn't know the depth of knowledge on these forums wouldn't make it past the front page. Oh well.

Andrei, AT"s phone guy left last fall. Can now add Ian Cutress to that list. Just leaves Ryan Smith running Anandtech now, but even they haven't reviewed a single GPU since 2020. Anandtech didn't even post a review of Ampere. I figure Future plc will merge THG and what's left of Anandtech together before too long.

I watch a combination of Hardware Unboxed and GN these days. HUB at least does excellent VRM testing that I don't see replicated anywhere else and HUB had excellent testing of DDR5. Also the best/most exhaustive 6500XT PCIe width testing as well. With Gamers Nexus having that giant fan testing machine I'm looking forward to in depth fan testing from them in the future. Otherwise I just browse https://www.reddit.com/r/hardware/ Everything seems to have either migrated to Reddit or to channel-specific Discord servers, but you have to be a donor to get into most of them.

Here for the 1st time in a couple of years I guess... and the last. Godspeed gerbils. Godspeed.

EDIT: Heavens forfend, my last forum post was FIVE years ago! I guess I was always more active in article comments... back when articles were written by actual humans. Sorry, I loved the old TR too much to interface in any way with what it's become.

I guess I'm still here too! but as you can see I very rarely post anything. It's nice to see there's some people left. Would be good if there's some guys getting together to resurrect this website and just drop the activity from this place. Maybe some day?

Two thoughts:

1.) Who the **** are you
2.) You came to the wrong forum if you're bored

Back when Celeron 300As ran at 450mhz. And Intel hated it.
Mendocino Celerons were more of a happy accident. Intel was experimenting on trying to add on-die L2 cache. They were resulted, because they only able to cram 128KiB of it on 250nm node. Intel marketing branded them as "Celerons" while at time Slot 1 Pentium IIs had 512KiB on back of the module but it operated on back-side bus (1/2 of the CPU clockspeed) versus the full clockspeed that L2 cache enjoyed on Mendocino "Celeron". The "Celeron" could easily handle the same clockspeed as their Pentium II brethen (Same architecutre) and were faster as long as the data fit could within smaller L2 Cache pool.
In a way, Mendocino "Celeron" were kinda a proto-"Coppermine" Pentium III at least the Socket 370 version.

There's two other CPUs to discuss, with that: the Dixon Pentium II, and the other Dixon Pentium II.

The Dixon Pentium II is basically a Mendocino Celeron with the L2 cache block duplicated and attached on the end of the existing one - so it has 256 kiB just like the later Coppermine - sold for mobile use (from 266 to 400 MHz), as far as I can tell from die shots.

...and then there's the later steppings of the 400 MHz Dixon Pentium II, which is a die shrink to 180 nm, making it even more of a proto-Coppermine. (But it has a completely different floorplan from the actual Coppermine, as it's still a Mendocino with more L2, just die-shrunk.)

Well took 3 tries to guess my password but 3rd time was a charm. First visit in probably a year.

Usually hangout at smallnetbuilder forums and techpowerup (mechtech *handle) now. Forums here are really tapering off now also. Too bad, is/was a lot of knowledgeable people here.

semi-annual checkin (actually seeing if I could still find an Acronis code from an old subscription here, and i don't see how)

to add at least the tiniest amount of substance, I might occasionally appear at TechPowerUp, HotHardware, ServeTheHome forums and comments

It's ahhhh...difficult to check in here. I miss it so much. Last year i reread all the major cpu reviews from sandy bridge to coffee lake. I don't know why - because I had the time. I just ... missed it.
Be careful on inserting this (or any G34 chip) into the socket. Once you pull that restraining lever, it is either a good install or a piece of silicon jewelry.

Activity in the Back porch!

Good to see some familiar names still posting. I'll admit, I'm checking in less and less, as time goes by. Such a shame, as the TR was my home page since 2000 or 2001, up until about 5 years ago... or so...

Hope you all are doing well!
