Emmylou Harris!! Hands down. Amy Lee is OK but I get tired of her after a while. Harris stays good though.

Another vote for Emmylou and honorable mention for Linda Ronstadt.

I just have to throw in a couple of singers that MOST LIKELY not many have heard of:

Floor Jansen, After Forever (http://www.afterforever.com)
and
Sharon den Adel, Within Temptation (http://www.within-temptation.com)

for some reason I've been listening to a lot of "goth metal" recently

I do have to say that I have to agree with most of the other women people have listed, too :D

Kate Bush.

You can't have a Tori Amos, a Sarah McLachlan nor an Amy Lee without her.
If you're unfamiliar with Kate and like any of the above, go out and buy a record called "The Whole Story".
Good stuff.

Stevie Nicks is the origin of my obsession with alterna-chicks. Without her I'd have never gone through my vampy-goth-biker chick phase that led me to Amy Lee and kaRin from Collide.

Stevie Nicks, great voice on that one.

I like Sheryl Crow too, her stuff just appeals to me.

In addition to my vote for Imogene Heap (Frou Frou), im also going to say Amy Lee (Very Good Voice IMHO), Mariah Carey (before the... unpleasantness), Fiona Apple and Michelle Branch (somewhat decent)...
Frankly though im a little surprised more people haven’t said Imogene, less name recognition I guess...

I've been meaning to mention her in this thread. She's also got a new project with a new CD that should be out soon, if not already.

Carrie Brownstien from Sleater-Kinney

She may not have the greatest vocal talent ever, but she rocks harder than any other gal since Janis Joplin.

---------
edit- I've always thought it was telling that there are so few women doing real rock that you can have a band like Evanescence doing pretty generic stuff, but it is huge simply because of the novelty of a female lead. I'm not knocking Amy Lee, she has talent. But if you replace her with a male singer the music would be indistinguishable from most other numetal bands. Why do 90% of women who want to be in music become diva singers (madonna-spears style) or singer-songwriters (tori, mclachlan)? I know lots of girls who find rock appealing, but every girl I've even known who plays music wants to do something else.
