Getting some work done quick this evening so I don't have to get it done tomorrow evening (due Monday morning). Threw together a playlist to work to:

Reptar - Houseboat Babies
Danger Mouse; Sparklehorse - Revenge (Feat. The Flaming Lips)
Tegan And Sara - Closer
Red Hot Chili Peppers - Higher Ground
Amy Winehouse - Back To Black
Steam Powered Giraffe - Honeybee (SteamWorld Heist)
Pentatonix - Daft Punk

Atheist - Piece of Time (1989)

A slice of thrash/death/prog metal history I was previously unaware of. Some crazy stuff going on here... extreme metal with jazz influences. This was recommended to me by a co-worker, when I mentioned that I'd recently discovered Cynic. Oh great, another musical tangent to pursue.

At least this probably won't contribute to Captain Ned's CC balance... I'm pretty sure it is too thrashy/metal for the Cap'n.

Oh, weird... I was just thinking of that song yesterday. Then I had the thought that Disturbed should do a cover of it, like they did with Sound of Silence.

Katatonia - Dead End Kings.

Coincidentally, I only just noticed they released a new album last year. Went to pick it up off amazon and saw a new Mastodon album is available for preorder. Looks like I will have two new albums to enjoy this month :)

Not exactly a "what are you listening to"... more of a "what will you be listening to in a few days", or possibly "what did you listen to 50 years ago", but this seemed like the most appropriate place to post this.

The news of Chuck Berry's death touched off a series of web/Wikipedia tangents, which led me (via info about Chess Records) to the discovery of a recording that I think I remember from my early childhood: https://www.amazon.com/Hour-Ramsey-Lewi ... 194&sr=1-1

The cover image seems eerily familiar, and the original release date of 1959 would put it in the right timeframe to have been in my parents' record collection when I first became musically aware. I also have this vague recollection of a piano-led acoustic jazz album that was an integral part of the sonic backdrop of my early years. (Mom was a music fan, into everything from Beethoven to Ella Fitzgerald to show tunes to the Beatles and Dylan.)

I may have just re-discovered a small, long-lost piece of my childhood. I ordered it; I'll let y'all know if it pans out.

Yup, I'm pretty sure that's it. Sounds really familiar. Reading the liner notes, the whole thing was basically done "live in the studio"... they just got together and ran through a bunch of material for a few hours with the tape rolling, then went back and selected the best songs for inclusion on the album.

Fidelity isn't bad for a 1950s-era recording either. I was sort of expecting a half-a**ed vinyl transfer, given the age and relative obscurity of the album. The CD wouldn't read in my main system's DVD drive, but ripped fine in the external USB DVD burner I have.

A Disturbed cover of that would be either awesome or horrible. Either way I'd buy it.

The other contender for the "loudest concert" award is Iron Maiden, a few years ago in Tinley Park, IL.

Yes, both were louder than Van Halen, who IIRC used to boast that they were the loudest band in rock 'n' roll. Pffft.

I think the size of the venue has something to do with that also. The last few festivals I've been to have been pretty loud, but being outdoor events I think helps with that. The last time I saw Halestorm in concert though it was at the Regency Ballroom in SF which is kind of small for that type of event. Afterwards it felt like I had lost my voice but I couldn't hear myself well enough to tell. The sounds of the city were strange and choppy also like certain frequencies just weren't getting through. Still worth it. Can't wait to see them again.

The recent mention of Cat Stevens has prompted me to rip his Greatest Hits CD (which we own but I haven't listened to in years) and load it into my phone to listen to during today's commute.

A bit of Cat Stevens / Morning Has Broken trivia: The piano intro to Morning Has Broken used on the Cat Stevens version of the song was written and played by Rick Wakeman, of Yes. It was adapted from the intro to a piece which he was working on for his first solo album.

Double bloody WOW!! Have most all (on vinyl) of Stevens/Wakeman/Yes and never made that connection until now.

On the way in this AM, it was Pete Townshend and "Pure and Easy". Fellow Who followers know that Pete's solo projects are where he went to express the "feels" he couldn't sell to the rest of the band. My personal fave Pete album is his collaboration with Ronnie Lane (ex-Small Faces and Faces) "Rough Mix".

"Tea for the Tillerman" is the usual starting point. The de rigueur "deluxe" edition includes a second disc of live cuts from the original album.

Completely random observation, only semi-related to this thread: If I ride an elevator up 15 stories, the bass response of my ears drops off until my ears pop to equalize the pressure. When I arrived at the office today I was listening to that Ramsey Lewis jazz album I mentioned a few posts back, and about halfway up the bass pretty much disappeared from the mix. My ears popped, and the bass came back.

I was previously aware that Wakeman played on the song (uncredited IIRC, don't have the original album to check), but was not aware of the direct connection to his solo album until I followed a few Wikipedia tangents last night. It was an "Aha!" moment.

Six Wives... is by far the best of his solo projects, IMO.

Bruce wrote the song, Joan Jett & Michael J. Fox used in in a movie, and Joan & Bruce collaborated many years later:

Given my age and when I grew up, the vid of Joan and MJF just works on some existential level.

Fairport Convention - Liege and Lief.

Apropos of other recent posts, I am now basking in the sheer beauty of Sandy Denny's voice. Most here will know her as the female voice on "Battle of Evermore" on LZ4.

EDIT: Some ancient Genesis (Can-Utility and the Coastliners) performed by Steve Hackett and his band.

New stuff (To me)

Some Mary Guthrie (no idea if she's related to Woody). Kind of country.

Ghost; a younger friend turned me onto them. They're like easy listening metal.

Heart - Jupiters Darling (2004)

I've mentioned this album before, but it's worth bringing up again. When it was released, it was easily the best thing they'd done since their heyday in the 1970s. Definitely a return to form.

The whole album is available on YouTube, here: https://youtu.be/kCMEDQUvDBU

The opening track "Make Me" is incredibly good, and for some reason I'm especially fond of the noisy bit of weirdness "I'm Fine", which features Nancy on lead vocals and Mike McCready (of Pearl Jam) as guest guitarist. (Direct bookmark to "I'm Fine": https://youtu.be/kCMEDQUvDBU?t=2794)

The album has a great mix of ballsy rockers and mellow ballads. Nearly all of the songs are written by the Wilson sisters and guitarist Craig Bartock (unlike in the '80s when they relied more on outside songwriters). Nancy also gets a larger share of lead vocals -- nearly a third of the songs! -- on this album. Not that there's anything wrong with Ann's voice (far from it), but I really do love Nancy's voice too, even if she doesn't have Ann's power.

They've continued to release albums sporadically since then -- Red Velvet Car in 2010, Fanatic in 2012, and Beautiful Broken (a mix of new material and reworked versions of a handful of older "deep cuts") in 2016.
