2008 Shelby Lynne cover of a song written by Randy Newman very early in his career, originally recorded by Jerry Butler (1964), then several years later by Dusty Springfield (1969).

Shelby is my go to when I want to hear a musical mind coupled with a fantastic instrument and a deep well of experience. Never heard a dishonest note leave her mouth. Can't remember who the producer was on "I Am Shelby Lynne" but that was an exercise in trust that paid off brilliantly.

Checking out Amorphis today.

We actually had a couple of their CDs in the collection already (my wife has been into Scandinavian metal for a while), though I had not listened to them until now. Rest of the back catalog appears to be on Spotify.

Thurisaz - Circadian Rhythm (2007)

More random Euro-Metal tonight (though not Scandinavian this time, they're apparently Belgian). Just stumbled onto them, never heard of (let alone heard) them before.

Wikipedia seems to think they're Black/Doom/Death Metal... not sure I 100% agree with that. I hear a fair bit of MDM in there (keyboards seem to feature fairly prominently, and there's a mix of growled and clean vocals). The tempos also seem rather fast for the Doom sub-genre. Maybe this album is an outlier.

@Anovoca - You may want to check this album/band out if you haven't already.

@ Insomnium tonight. Their opener Oceans of Slumber has got some real talent and well worth a listen. The lead singer has got herself one hell of a set of pipes.

Jbi- ill check your recommendation out on Tuesday when im back at work.

...and I'll definitely be checking out Oceans Of Slumber.

Just as soon as I finish listening to Racine Revisited one more time. It's a "25th anniversary remake" (released last year) of one my favorite albums of all time. Supposedly she was going for a looser, rawer, '70s retro vibe compared to the original 1992 album release. I'd say she succeeded. This is very good.

I like it. Thurisaz has an I teresting sound stage with their keyboards. They feel like a slowed down Children of Bodom.

Scale The Summit - V (2015)

Instrumental prog metal. Sounds a bit Animals-As-Leaders-ish to me.

New Ghost album Prequelle out today. Hopefully the cd will be waiting in my mailbox when I get home but I will just have to enjoy the tracks on Youtube until then.

Faith so far is my favorite track on the album.

Finally sitting down and giving an appropriate go at Omnium Gatherum. Admittedly, when JBI first recommended them to me I was sitting on 10 new albums to go through and only gave them a conciliatory listen. I liked what I heard but forgot about them. Thought I would give them a second try now that I have absorbed all the Insomnium albums I can handle and need a break. So far I am greatly enjoying Grey Heavens.

As a side note to JBI. It looks like there is a melo-death powerhouse tour late summer you may want to look into. Amorphis and Dark Tranquility co-headlining with Omnium Gatherum and Moonspell opening the show. I currently know very little of any of those bands other than the fact that most life long Insomnium fans will tell you that without Dark Tranquility and InFlames that the genre wouldn't exist. Haven't liked what I have heard so far from DT but I have all summer to dissect them.

Thanks for the heads-up on the MDM tour. My wife and my musical tastes have diverged quite a bit over the past couple of decades, and it seems MDM is one of the few current areas of overlap; she went MDM a few years back, and I've kind of circled back around to it over the past couple of years via prog metal. We haven't been to a concert together in a while, and that looks like it could work.

Currently playing here: Thought Eater - Bones in the Fire (2018)

Doomy/sludgy instrumental metal (except for the last track, which is quiet, acoustic, and proggy, reminiscent of Djam Karet's more ambient moments). This was recommended to me by a co-worker I've been trading musical recommendations with for the past couple of months. A fair bit of cross-pollination going on between this thread and my Slack PMs with said co-worker.

That's pretty cool. Im in probably the opposite boat. MDM has been the most problematic sub-genre getting my girl into. She enjoyed Insomnium concert somewhat, but most of that was because of the prog metal Oceans of Slumber that opened for them and her getting to meat the singer after he show when she bought a t-shirt from the bands merch table. Part of that disinterest in MDM was my fault as the first MDM song she heard was In Silence Enshrined - Katatonia (played as a joke) which is about as dirgey as the genre can get. I will try to get to this concert down in Chicago. They will be stopping at a venue there 2 days after Mastodon plays at The Rave in Milwaukee. I might just take the whole week off for my birthday and make a metal filled road trip out of it.

Another slab of noisy, doomy, sludgy, instrumental metal. Quite enjoying this TBH.

Decided to check out the band Amorphis for the first time this morning. I am about 2 hours into their youtube and amazon prime playlists and I haven't heard a song I don't love yet. They are about as far on the melodic side of MDM as one can get but very high energy and no doom or gloom feel. They sound like a European FFDP, somewhere on the spectrum between Insomnium and mid-late 2000s Paradise Lost. This would be a really good foot in the door band for the MDM sub-genre of metal for people that are iffy on scream/growls. I would say their songs are about 70/30 clean/guttural.

edit: JK, i just looked at the clock and noticed I have been sitting here closer to 5 hours.
