Try 0-bit 0-KHz vinyl. Album art is so much better on a much larger canvas.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Is that really 0-bit, or is it infinite-bit?

Hmm. Philosophy early Saturday AM. Upon reflection, I'll go with the infinibit.

You're going to have a tough time finding fully analog recordings of anything from the past couple of decades though. So for newer material, once you've got resolution equivalent to the equipment used to produce the recording there's probably nothing more to be gained.

I imagine that even current vinyl reissues of older recordings have probably been digitally remastered, unless they still had the original master in a warehouse somewhere and used it to make new stampers.

In the audionervosa community, it's not a remaster unless you're working with the original studio multitrack tapes.

Wouldn't that be a "remix"?

Rounded out the Intronaut collection with their latest. More off-kilter prog metal from one of my favorite new (to me) musical discoveries.

Cap'n, the problem with vinyl (and to a lesser extent, tape) is that it wears out over time. First play? Awesome! Five-hundredth play? Ugh.

Until there's a good solution for that we're going to need to put up with high-quality lossy rips, because the losses there are one-and-done.

Just curious whether you got from A to B via Weird Al's "I Can't Watch This"?

Off the Deep End is one of Weird Al's finest albums. The capper is that Extreme style parody - "You Don't Love Me Anymore" just screams "More Than Words", and if you can't figure it out from the recording you can certainly figure it out from the video, which is awesome. But, like, Smells Like Nirvana, The Plumbing Song (which has more of Weird Al than the originals had Milli Vanilli) and The White Stuff are classic reworks of at-the-time popular tunes, and Airline Amy, Trigger Happy, and I Was Only Kidding are really good original songs.

A solid second place to Straight Outta Lynnwood, which is super-fun.

There are certain songs I can't hear without hearing the Weird Al parody version in my head. American Pie. I Love Rock 'n Roll. Jeopardy. Beat It. Give It Away. Gangsta's Paradise. Another One Bites The Dust. Like A Virgin. Blurred Lines. I'm kinda torn on whether this enhances the experience, or has ruined these songs for me for life. I guess it depends on the song.

The more I listen to this, the more I like it.

Here's the opening track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOxxAdRtU1w (OK, I think the official video is kinda lame... but just close your eyes and listen to the music, this is amazing stuff)

Edit: I think what's really appealing to me is that they've got a fairly hard, guitar-driven metal edge to them, but also incorporate jazz and prog idioms, while also managing to be more accessible than "extreme" prog metal bands like Meshuggah.

Experimental prog metal jazz fusion? I'm in. I love this album.

Oh dear. JBI, I hate to say this: You no longer have sole control over my impulsive music purchases.

bthylafh: If you've read these some 116 pages you know that I consider the female voice to be the apotheosis of music. Thank you for exposing yet another branch of that tree (and in bluegrass/folk to boot).

I will always miss Sandy Denny.

Yes, that piqued my interest as well.

But I never had illusions of sole control, given that our musical tastes -- in spite of the substantial overlap -- have some quite divergent aspects as well. I'm assuming you're still not a fan of early Opeth... or Intronaut (whom I've been posting about lately).

Getting back to female singer/songwriter types...

I forget if we've ever discussed Sam Phillips. I know I've mentioned her in this thread, but I don't recall if you acknowledged owning any of her CDs. If you need a starting point, Martinis And Bikinis is probably it. I'd kind of ignored her for quite a while (since the mid '90s), but have been getting caught up with what she's done since then; recently picked up a used copy of Don't Do Anything (2008), and it is really growing on me.

Annie Clark (a.k.a. St. Vincent) is also worth checking out. In addition to her solo releases, she's done an excellent collabo with David Byrne (Love This Giant), which, not too surprisingly, has a very Talking Heads feel to it.

Spock's Beard - Snow (2002)

I pretty much stopped following these guys after 2000's V, which I found to be entirely forgettable. But after listening to some of it on YouTube, and reading some reviews online, I decided to order a used copy of Snow. It's actually pretty good.

The circumstances surrounding the creation of this album have some rather odd parallels with Genesis' Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. It's the band's 6th studio release, it's a double album, and is their only release to have a single over-arching concept tying the entire album together. But wait, there's more... it's also set in New York City, was written almost entirely by the lead singer (who quit the band shortly after the album was released), and it received mixed reviews on release. Heh.

Anyhow, musically (and as with most of SB's albums), it draws liberally on Yes, Gentle Giant, and (IMO to a lesser extent) Genesis and King Crimson as influences. It definitely wears its '70s prog rock influences on its sleeve. There are a few tracks here and there that feel somewhat predictable, or drag out a little longer than they need to; but overall this is a solid release.

Here's the entire thing on YouTube if you're curious:
Part 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9LUUZleMcs
Part 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3SOkEF7Ewsk

Check out the first few bars of the instrumental intro to Part 2 -- blatant rip-off of (or homage to) Yes' "Heart Of The Sunrise". Then about a minute and a half in it starts to take a left turn, and at 1:50 launches into something that could easily be mistaken for vintage King Crimson. That whole section made me ...

If you're a fan of epic prog rock concept pieces, you'll probably enjoy this.

(Note: Some of the lyrics do have some overt spiritual content to them, as Neal Morse had recently become "Born Again" when he wrote most of this album. So if that's gonna put you off, maybe this isn't your cup of tea.)

St. Vincent - St. Vincent (2014)

St. Vincent (a.k.a. Annie Clark) has her own unique flavor of quirky pop-art-rock. Maybe you could call her Kate Bush for the new millennium? Her sound is more aggressive than Ms. Bush though. Some echoes of Talking Heads on this one, which makes sense given that her previous project (Love This Giant) was a collaboration with David Byrne.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mVAxUMuhz98
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TAdARF4rGcQ

She's a pretty sick guitarist too, though her studio material only hints at it; check out this live performance (great song, and closes with an extended guitar solo):
