Van Halen - 1984

One of the best rock albums ever made. Eddie plays the guitar like it's a piano. Probably because he was a pianist growing up.

Eddie plays piano like it's a piano, too. Right Now is my favorite song of the Van Hagar era.

I also really like his piano work in 5150: Dreams and Love Walks In are two really great songs.

New Omnium Gatherum album out last Friday ~ The Burning Cold. So far I am very impressed. The Omnium Gatherum / Amorphis / Dark Tranquility NA Tour has also begun and I am looking forward to seeing all three next week in Joliet, IL.

Yeah, already listened to it on Spotify. I agree, this is very good.

Swallow The Sun - Ghosts Of Loss (2005)

Hadn't gotten around to listening to this yet since it wasn't on Spotify when I did my initial spin through their discography, and the full album does not appear to be available on YouTube either. Just happened to notice it is available as a free stream with my Amazon Prime membership!

So far, it strikes me as a big ol' slab of doomy MDM goodness. Will post more thoughts after I've listened to the whole thing.

Russian Circles - Enter (2006)

Instrumental rock with long, slowly unfolding songs. Enjoying this quite a bit.

@Captain Ned - You might want to give them a try, though I suspect they may be a little too "metal" for you.

While listening to SXM 20 (all Brooce, all the time) on the way home from work tonight, I had a sudden epiphany. I now know why he's still at it. It's been 43 years since Born to Run and he's still trying to write something that equals, let alone surpasses, Thunder Road.

The now non-canon Dune Encyclopedia (no, I shall never part with my copy) notes in its several entries on music the remaining presence of music written by Lennon/McCartney, such that they remain popular baliset tunes some 25,000 years on (if you accept the Encyclopedia chronology). Stands to reason that TR would be there as well.

On the way home from the show lastnight. Omnium Gatherum was one hell of an opening act and the rest of the show kept its pace.

Moonspell was an absolute treat and has secured themselves a spot in my heart as well as my music server. JBI, I would recommend you check out their 1755 album. They are a Portuguese MDM with hints of amon amarth and Iron Maiden in a Van Helsing wrapper. Epic.

Dark Tranquility has always held a solid "meh" rating with me, so when I say they stole the show believe me when I say, see these guys live and you wont regret it. True showmans and absolute mastercrafts in their art. It helps that we were front and center in the crowd and the amount of direct eye contact from the singer and lead guitar made us feel like they were performing just for us. I threw out my voice screaming as hard as I could to any song off their Atoma album. I think their lead guiarist was impressed with my chops because he started growling the lyrics with me then handed me his pick after the show. Life long dream fullfilled.

Amorphis was sadly the worst performace. They were extremly static with only the wirey bassist moving on stage or making eye contact with the crowd. We had the rythm guitarist in front of us for this part of the show. He was sooooo boring to watch. We ended up walking out of the front and headed to the merch table before their encore set. Sad, since of the 4 band playing that night, they were whom we were excited to see the most.

This isn't even English. What the hell are these words? I'm soooooooooo uneducated on this genre apparently.

I've been listening to a lot of Jinjer lately which was my gateway band into death metal.

Yes, it's metal. Keep listening and you'll see. They don't tour much here in the states since they're a Ukrainian band, but Tatiana Shmailyuk has one of the most amazing voices I've ever heard.

They tour NA next month actually, opening for Devil Driver. If you like JinJer, check out Oceans of Slumber.

Yeah, I was just looking at that after posting. I should probably pick one of those and take a drive since I probably won't get another chance for a while. Checking out Oceans of Slumber on Spotify now. :)

I think Iron Maiden would take serious issue with the "isn't even English" descriptor.

Russian Circles - Station (2008)

More instrumental rock (Wikipedia calls them "Post-Metal"... WTF is that anyway?) from a local Chicago-area band (that I've never seen live).

I'm quite enjoying this TBH.

The Beatles - [Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band] - #01 - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band

I'm actually a "Stones > Beatles" guy, but this album is so good I make an exception fairly often.

SPLHCB and Abbey Road are my "go to" Beatles albums.

Random ranting inspired by your post follows...

The White Album gets a lot of praise, but to me it feels like a meandering, disjointed mess. IMO it's an exercise in drug-induced self-indulgence with flashes of (probably also drug-induced?) brilliance interspersed. Could've made a great album if they'd edited it down to single album length, but as released there's just too much random filler.

I feel Fleetwood Mac's Tusk suffers from the same malaise. It's a disjointed self-indulgent mess of a double album with some really good bits, coming on the heels of what is widely acknowledged to be their definitive statement as a band.

Yeah, 41 songs is insane. I still love Tusk (and obviously Rumours).

Back to SPLHCB - I mean, it's just insane. Title track, Lucy, WALHFMF, Rita, A Day In the Life. Just ridiculous. Abbey Road is equally nuts. I love Golden Slumbers so much. I Want You. The Bathroom Window. Such good music.

As for this morning...
Beck - [Guero] - #06 - Earthquake Weather - Been a Beck fan since the mid 90's. Still love it.
Weezer - [Pinkerton Disc 2] - #06 - El Scorcho (live at Reading Festival 1996) - Weezer was a big part of my childhood.

This has been posted before, but the talk of SPLHCB reminded me of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NYD3QtyEGGM

(They parodied the entire album this way... the series of videos could very well be the most fantastic thing I've ever seen on YouTube.)

Iron Maiden ~ Dance of Death. IMO their most underrated album.

I just purchased three new Dark Tranquility albums to start going through their back catalog, but I picked up a bug from a kid's birthday party this past weekend and MDM doesn't play well with sinus pressure headaches. Egyptian licorice mint tea, NyQuil, and Paschendale on the other hand is a very nice combo.

In a similar vein, my favourite Whitney song.
