Just discovered Poets of the Fall. Great musicians, great vocals, and incredible prose turned lyrics. Instantly fell in love to the point we turned around and added their song All the way/4U to our wedding dance list as the last dance of the evening.

Also, if no one was yet aware, new Opeth was put out on youtube this past weekend and it is VERY good.

Seconded for Poets of the Fall - those guys are awesome.

If you like them, check out Riverside and also Katatonia.

Listening to random old Rush tracks tonight. "Bastille Day" has always been one of my favorites. A raging, rampaging tune even in its original form, they take it at breakneck pace on this 1978 live recording (released as part of a third bonus disc with the 1998 live release Different Stages). To me it feels like Lifeson is pushing the tempo a bit at first, and Peart actually tries to rein him in a bit by the time the vocals start...

Used today's drive (Erie, PA to Holland, MI via Kalamazoo) to listen to all four sides of Yes - Tales From Topographic Oceans. It still holds up for me.

I'll save all six Phases of the Hitchhiker's Guide radio plays for the 2-day drive back home.

There's enough time to squeeze it in on a drive from Chi-Town.

Various Artists - Working Man: A Tribute To Rush (1996)

Guess I missed this somehow when it originally came out. Many of the tracks feature Mike Portnoy (one of my favorite drummers) and Billy Sheehan (one of my favorite bass players) as the rhythm section. The guest vocalists on a couple of the tracks border on cringe-worthy, but IMO these are minor warts on what is otherwise a great collection of other musicians interpreting roughly the first third of Rush's career (there's only one song on here post-Signals). They also seem to have opted to skip many of the better-known songs (e.g. no Tom Sawyer, Limelight, Spirit of Radio, or Subdivisions), which is an interesting move IMO.

Tool - Fear Inoculum

Only Tool would have the balls to release a 10:21 single. Or wait 13 years to release an album

The single is exceptional though. First time I've been excited for an album release in quite some time.

I believe the 13 year hiatus was largely the result of legal issues.

Could be, but I've also heard Maynard express mild frustration with the tedium/perfectionism of the other members on more than one occasion (on Joe Rogan's podcasts and such). It was only within the past 30 days that they finally allowed any of their catalog to be released on streaming media, which Maynard attributed to the other members.

It's possible that there's also some legal stuff as well, but he's not able to talk about it.

...the biggest problem has been a multi-level lawsuit that has weighed on all of the group members. This stemmed from a claim that a Tool associate had made against the group, but it eventually spiraled into the labyrinthine legal equivalent of a Laurel and Hardy routine, amounting to “who’s suing whom.”

If you happen to be in the direct line of fire from one of the hanging clusters of speakers, I hope you have earplugs. Otherwise you will not be able to hear properly for 2 days. This is from personal experience, when I saw IM (with Dream Theater opening for them) at the same venue several years ago.

I was at that show as well, that time in the lawn area. It wasnt just you, we couldnt hear dream theater at all and only heard IM clearly about halfway through the show.

That sound crew was not on point that night.

That must be the point at which they cranked it up. Fixed IM for you folks who were up in the back, but made it too loud for those of us who were in front of a set of speakers! And yeah, DT needed more volume even from where we were.

Tanith - In Another Time

I found these guys on Google the other day while listening to random metal... and I've been hooked. They have a weird, almost folk prog metal sound. There are a ton of little things I could nitpick about them... on instruments you can tell they're skilled but they often sound just a little out of sync with one another, and most of the songs feature both a male and female on vocals - neither is particularly memorable and they're often just slightly off tempo or out of harmony... but somehow these things actually add to the charm. Has almost a demo-album kinda vibe.

Frankly, they sound like a some AD&D nerds listened to a lot of RUSH and Yes and then decided to form a band... but somehow I mean that as a compliment :D

Anyway, if you like prog-rock/metal and are looking for something different, the album is worth a listen.

The lawn peons appreciate your sacrifice.

As an aside, this venue looks very different from that time, or at least from how i remember it. No cones pointed immediatley in my direction, Ill have to wait and see how the sound is when raven age takes the stage 30 mins from now. This is going to be a great show, too bad you couldnt come join us.

Sound quality at tinley park last night was as good as ive heard for an outdoor venue. The three guitars could sometimes be difficult to distinguish, but otherwise no complaints. Iron Maiden put on one hell of a show and brought their A game and a much nicer stage setup than when they came with DT.

The only complaint on the evening was how many people were smoking around us. For a non smoking venue. It was quite terrible.

Now off to navy pier before hiking back up north.

We actually had lawn tickets that time too, but we were right up against the railing at the front of the lawn section, with one of the big hanging clusters of speakers (located directly across the walkway) aimed more or less straight at our heads!

Glad to hear you had a good time at the show.

Shadow Gallery - Digital Ghosts (2009)

If a mad scientist took Queensryche, Dream Theater, and Queen, and produced a mutant hybrid of the three, the result would be something resembling this album. If you're a fan of any/all of the above, you should probably check this out.
