St. Vincent - MassEducation (2018)

Not to be confused with her release Masseduction from last year; though it contains the same songs, the arrangements are vastly different, and quite sparse. This "reworking" is -- for the most part -- just vocals and acoustic piano. TBH I vastly prefer it to the original version, though sadly this approach does mean we don't get to hear any of her quirky guitar playing (there wasn't a lot of that on Masseduction either).

I can't help drawing parallels between this and Tori Amos' 1996 release Boys For Pele. Similarly sparse and intimate, but not quite as quirky/weird.

Sibelius violin concerto in D major

Taking a little detour from my (mostly) metal explorations to dig into some of the corners of the classical repertoire I have not previously explored. Some of Tchaikovsky's lesser-known works are also in the queue.

Kicking myself for not checking Sibelius out sooner. I don't think anyone will ever replace Beethoven as my all-time favorite classical composer, but the Sibelius symphonies are very good.

Edit: On first listen, some of it reminds me of Dvorak; there's that European folk music influence (though Sibelius was Finnish, while Dvorak was Czech). But there's also a dark, brooding, angry side, like Beethoven. And some of it looks forward to less formally structured modern music as well.

Elton John - Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy (1975)

Haven't listened to this album start-to-finish in many years. Possibly decades. I think it was a combination of burning out on it by listening to it incessantly when it originally came out, the relative weakness of his subsequent releases, and discovering other genres of music (prog rock, fusion, etc.) that kind of led me away from Elton John. But this is really good stuff. Great songwriting that really showcases the versatility of the John/Taupin team... the 1970s' Lennon/McCartney IMO. This was also the last release before the breakup of the "classic" lineup of his band.

Elton John - Too Low For Zero (1983)

Arguably the strongest album he released post-1970s. Not as consistent as the albums he released in the early- to mid-1970s, but decent. Even got the original band back together for this one, and that's part of the appeal.

The hit single "I'm Still Standing" kind of sums it up...

The song "No Shoe Strings On Louise" from Elton John's self-titled 1970 album sounds like a Stones parody.

Keepers:

7. “Star Wars Theme/Cantina Band” (Meco, 1977)
5. “A Fifth of Beethoven” (Walter Murphy and the Big Apple Band, 1976) (it was between this and “Muskrat Love” (The Captain & Tennille, 1976))

Oh, man... I'd actually forgotten about "Pop Muzik" and the disco-ified "Star Wars" until I clicked on those. Gee, thanks for reviving those repressed memories... :-?

I can't imagine which ones you consider to be "keepers".

Maybe they should've done a "Top 15" instead, so they could've included other bits of '70s musical genius like Kung Fu Fighting, Dead Skunk, Me And You and a Dog Named Boo, Afternoon Delight, and Torn Between Two Lovers. Yup, these were all big hits back in the day, indelibly etched into my memory on account of how overplayed they were on the radio.

Honorable mention to one-hit-wonder Fancy, for their cover of The Trogg's "Wild Thing". With a Penthouse model on vocals, no less. Anyone who was male, heterosexual, and a teenager (plus or minus a couple of years) back then likely remembers that one.

Fortunately the '70s also gave us a lot of other music which was fan-damn-tastic.

Expanding my horizons again, listening to some early '70s "Krautrock" from Can - Tago Mago, Ege Bamyasi, and Future Days. It's... interesting. Can't say they'll be a "go to" listen for me in the future, but I can see where they're coming from, and how they've influenced things that came after.

Been on such a mixed bag lately. There is a new Architects album dropping in a week and thus 3 . new . singles from the album on YouTube already. I usually am not a fan of traditional Metalcore, however I have noticed a shift in the genre to incorporate more melodic verse. As primarily a melo-death fan I am happy to see another melo-subgenre emerge. Where melo-death generates dynamical shifts between bright and dark, melo-core tends to shift between anger/high energy and solemn/somber. The new architects album plays into this perfectly and is fueled by the death of their late lead guitarist. The songs are ripe with anger, frustration, and mourning. The newest Asking Alexandria album and the previous Two Trivium albums have also incorporated more clean vocals, AA probably more so than the others. It's a nice welcome change that has allowed me to expand my normal autumn repertoire, which historically has consisted of the more melodic/doom offerings in my library, shifting slowly over into classical symphonies by the start of winter.

Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimple (1974)

Semi-obscure '70s German prog rock in somewhat of an ELP/Yes-ish vein. The music is great; the engineering/mixing is a little uneven (the drum sound in particular, which is a little thin and has an annoying reverb effect at times).

Had this on vinyl back in the day, it disappeared sometime during college. Finally picked up the CD recently.
