Yup. I was referring more to the EVH/Holdsworth comparison. EVH really showed the world what was possible with tapping in a hard rock context. Steve Hackett (Genesis) was doing it before him, but Hackett wasn't nearly the showman that EVH was, and kept to the background for the most part (Genesis was really Peter Gabriel's band back then). Hackett was long gone by the time Genesis' commercial popularity peaked with Collins as the nominal bandleader.

@derFunk -

Speaking of Malmsteen, I'm a fan of his former bandmates the Johansson brothers (Jens and Anders).

Some Johansson brothers obscurities I've enjoyed over the years --

From one of the Johansson brothers' projects (Sonic Winter), with Malmsteen guesting on guitar:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vBkucx1bzDk

With Jonas Hellborg, from his album e (this is one of my "desert island" discs):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1GK7f9d3TMo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LvoQCnmDfU

Hammerfall's cover of "My Sharona" (with Anders on drums):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q-SFWc0dGfE

Some other Johansson projects:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfhBDL8 ... 0x&index=1 (another "desert island" disc)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocpi_saZQak (with Holdsworth!)

For sure. I'm one of those who wasn't as into the SynthAxe stuff. The thing he and Eddie have in common is tapping, which is really appealing to me because I'm first and foremost a woodwind and piano player. Tapping is very natural for me. I'm not as fast as either of them, not even close, but that was one of the quickest tricks for me to learn for myself.

I can play the tapping section of Eruption with either half the arpeggios or at half the tempo...maybe less, because I'm an amateur...which itself feels like a Herculean feat.

If you enjoy tapping then you should check out Steve Vai. His song Building the Church is an absolute clinic.
My personal favorite song to play and hone my tapping skill is probably Gojira - Global Warming

Here is a small treat for all of you. I forgot I even had these on youtube. It is a short, single take recording of an acoustic picking song I wrote. Vocals aren't the best as this was before my choir days where I developed my lower register. I would love to go back and lay new vocals down but I don't have the original audacity files anymore. There are more vids out there somewhere if enough of you get a kick out of listening to this one and want me to post a few more.

Yep, that's a great performance and he's another amazing player. And along with his skills, Steve Vai is a great song writer.

Black Country Communion - Black Country Communion 2 (2010)

Joe Bonamassa (blues rock guitarist extraordinaire), Glen Hughes (a former member of the rotating cast of characters which has comprised Deep Purple's lineup over the years), Jason Bonham (who definitely takes after his father), and Derek Sherinian (keyboardist for Dream Theater in the mid-'90s) decided to form a band. They've released four albums over the past decade.

Great '70s style retro hard rock. I suppose that's not entirely surprising, given the presence of Bonham and Hughes; but it also feels like Bonamassa is channeling Jimmy Page at times, and several of the compositions have an overt Zep feel (think Kashmir). Sherinian is solid too, getting into the whole '70s retro vibe and not engaging in any Dream Theater-style prog metal excesses (which I love in context, but would've spoiled the mood here).

Came across this today and thought I would share. This is a song (album?) written lyrically by the late female vocalist Aleah Starbridge. For those not familiar with the name, she sang on many of MDM's greatest songs. Chances are, if you are listening to an MDM song and a soft and gentle female vocalist comes in an leaves you with goosebumps, you just heard Aleah. This particular song/album was co-produced featuring an allstar cast of band members from Aleah's various previous collaboration efforts, including Juha Raivio from Swallow the Sun playing guitar, and Tomi Jousten of Amorphis providing the driving male vocals.

I'm still a little hazy on some of the details as to who is singing the female vocals on this since it looks and sounds like Aleah herself in the video. Not sure if this was partially recorded before her death or if they found someone else equally gifted.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc7VH2d ... J0LycGN7io

Either-way, this song on its own is intensely moving and highly worth the listen.

EDIT: An additonal FYI, it appears the entire album from this project is available for streaming on Amazon Music without the need for an unlimited subscription.
Edit2: Looks like the vocalist in this song is Heike Langhans, while the lyrics are taken from poetry written by Aleah prior to her death.

The Danish Symphony Orchestra plays Ennio Morricone. Yeah, that one. Check out the hanging effigy.

Every time I hear this, I cannot help but also hear a Pink Floyd piece that they, in later days, disavowed.
