My wife was showing me that video just the other day. They get extra points for the band name.

Soften The Glare - Making Faces (2017)

Damn, I completely missed this when it originally came out about a year ago.

Funky jazzy instrumental prog rock. I'm only halfway through my first listen, but I think I'm having an eargasm. This is some good sh*t!

Bass is very high in the mix, but it works, since the bass player is amazing (from the "play the bass like it is a lead instrument" school), in the vein of Geddy Lee, Chris Squire, Les Claypool, Jonas Hellborg, Jaco, etc.

Lozaga has always straddled the rock/jazz line. I hear hints of Holdsworth, Fripp, and Torn (David) in his playing, but by no means derivative... they're all just influences he's stirred in his pot. Always interesting, always evolving (that's why he's one of my favorite guitarists).

The drummer's pretty damn good too.

This gets a big thumbs up from me!

Back on an Oceans of Slumber kick. I read a lot of people comment that this band is a female led version of Opeth but I find that a bit shallow of a comparison. That is to take nothing away from OoS, I just think they build a lot of sound stage mostly through dynamics where Opeth uses a lot of varying techniques including tempo/keychanges, mulittraking, strings and wind instruments. OoS does not share Opeth's vein for prog. That said, their ability to seamlessly transition between heavy death-metal riffs and melodic ballads are straight from Akerfelts playbook.

Spoke Of Shadows - (self-titled) (2014)

Retro instrumental prog rock. Feels a bit King-Crimson-ish in spots, but also has bits reminiscent of Djam Karet in their quieter moments (which isn't entirely surprising given that it was released on DK's indie Firepool Records label).

@Captain Ned - I think it has been a few weeks (months?) since I convinced you to spend money on CDs. At least these guys only have two albums out, so your credit card balance is (relatively) safe!

Single and video released today: Torul - Ausverkauft

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nbjk1Pgt4rg

They're a band out of Slovenia (just south of Austria)
From what I gather on the video credits they are doing most of the production themselves. Nice visuals/drone footage of the countryside.

That's how I found them, too. Max Payne 2 had Late Goodbye in the credits, too. And of course War was featured in Alan Wake. The video for the song is totally based on the game. They were also a fictional band "Old Gods of Asgard" in Alan Wake. They seem to be pretty connected to Remedy.

Every one of their albums up through Twilight Theater is great. Temple of Thought had a couple decent songs. After that, their stuff has really fallen flat for me.

Discovered a new Genre the other day - Trance Metal. I am not sure if it is a real genre or just something this band uses for themselves since they are the only band I have ever seen that uses that title.

Anyways, the band is called Rage of Light, and the lead singer Melissa Bonny is absolutely breathtaking in so many ways.
They only have one album plus a handful of singles. In addition they seem to do a lot of very interesting but surprisingly well done covers. Their cover of Lady Gaga's Judas is my favorite.

Listening to some old-school Children of Bodom. Don't like anything after 'Are You Dead Yet?', but their old catalogue is top notch stuff.

Really enjoying the newest two tracks by Dream Theater - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gylxuO6dKOw. The solo progression is so tight. Two more months until I get to see them live in MKE.

Resonance Vox - O-X-O (1992)

Jazz/rock fusion from Japan. Great stuff, featuring guitarist Kazumi Watanabe (who is undeservedly obscure outside his home country). He also did a couple of albums with Bill Bruford and Jeff Berlin back in the '80s.

Couldn't find the album to stream online anywhere, but here's a live performance of the title cut: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WvkvUh9Ku1Y

Marcus King Band !! Good God, this kid is GIFTED. I was just introduced to his music on Sirius, and looked up some YT videos. Another group that led me to look up Marcus is 'Pigeons Playing Ping Pong', a Bal'more based group that had Marcus along for a solo on 'Lightning' that just brings the house down. On a whim, I looked to see where Marcus was going to be playing, and found he is playing in about a month at a venue only 30 minutes from me. Tickets are $30, so I REALLY hope I can attend that one.

The newest album from Swallow The Sun released on Friday and it is an early frontrunner for metal album of the year. This album (for context) is the first release of the band since the death of the lead guitar/song writer's wife. This is an MDM/Doom album written about his struggle with her death and the real raw emotion comes through in waves. This is definitely the most melodic release the band has ever done and people with an aversion to scream might even find themselves enjoying the heavier songs. There is no posturing in the growled vocals, it's just pure despair.

Firelights
Upon The Water

Edit: Just an additional side, in the Firelights video, after the song concludes you will see a large group of cloaked figures huddling around a black neckless in the woods. The cloaked figures are the members of the band. The forest they are gathered in was the location she filmed the music videos for her own album which the band helped her write and record. The neckless was a commonly worn piece of jewelry in her videos as well.

Soen - Lotus (2019)

Soen's debut Cognitive (2012) was very good, but also overtly derivative of Tool. With each subsequent album they have evolved a little, refined their approach, and increasingly stepped out of Tool's shadow to find their own voice. On this, their fourth album, everything really comes together. The playing (which has always been excellent), songwriting, vocals, production, and pacing of more aggressive tracks interspersed with quieter ones, all just click. IMO this is a fan-damn-tastic slab of prog metal goodness.

A couple of tracks:

Tori Amos - Scarlet's Walk (2002)

I've mentioned this one before a few years back, but I think it deserves another shout-out. It's the Tori Amos album I seem to keep coming back to, to listen to in its entirety time and time again. In retrospect it is definitely (not just possibly) my favorite over anything she's done before or since. (And yes she's still recording, releasing an album every couple of years or so; so there's a pretty sizable basis for comparison.)

David Fiuczynski and John Medeski - Lunar Crush (1994)

Great jazz/rock/funk fusion. The vocal tracks are a little... odd. But still a very enjoyable album.

Beth Hart - Leave The Light On (2003)

Quite possibly the best thing she's done. She's released (and continues to release) a stream of solid albums ever since (including several collabos with guitarist Joe Bonamassa), but this remains a high point.

If I had to fault the album for anything, the mastering is too compressed (f'in loudness wars ). But the songwriting, singing, and playing are all top-notch.

The first two tracks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaAZAGpEnWI (damn, this song is a stunner)

@Captain Ned - You probably need this album, if you don't own it already.
