Gunna need to get me some of that. Haven't had it in months (too many other new craft beers coming out to try).

I'm going to continue watching this thread just so I can figure out what to drink next.  Dogfish 90 is awesome stuff.

Earlier in the evening: Church Street Helles and Oktoberfest, at a volunteers' meeting for the upcoming Midwest Brewers Fest.

Both were quite enjoyable. As we've done every year this fest has been operating, my wife, daughter, and I will be running the homebrew demo area at this fest. It's a lot of work (we have to haul in all of the equipment, brewing water, and propane tanks ourselves), but it is a lot of fun too. We get to spend the afternoon chatting with other beer enthusiasts while brewing, and get a couple of batches of homebrew out of the deal (the fest pays for the ingredients).

Drinking now: Deschutes Hopzeit Autumn IPA

A bit more malt character than a typical IPA, but still pretty hop-forward. They seem to be billing it as a Märzen/IPA hybrid, and I'd say they've mostly succeeded. The finish is just a touch astringent, but aside from that, no complaints.

On deck: Dogfish 90 Minute!

Picked up a 4-pack after it was mentioned here a few days ago. Haven't had any in months; looking forward to it.

If memory serves me, I'm going to be very, very wired in about half an hour.

If you don't like Laphroaig you might try Lagavulin...  it's just as smoky (maybe a little more) but there are some other flavors in there that sort of balance it out.

Lagavulin tastes great - smoky, sweet, lots of interesting flavors in there.

It smells like iodine and bacon, though, and not in a good way.  And I say this as a man who's bottle of Lagavulin is nearly empty.  Just warning, because it will actually drive people away from you.  Best enjoyed in peace and solitude.

But they'll be people who don't appreciate good scotch, so why would you want them around in the first place?  :D

On the one hand, more scotch for me! On the other hand, one of the people who finds the smell of Lagavulin repellent is my wife. I do like her, even more than scotch.

not bad actually. stretched it out, drank lots of water and had a bacon-cheese sandwich before bed.  Kinda tired but our 4 year old got sick over night so I was up 3-4 times.

The Ardbeg Corryvreckan is open. At 57.1% ABV I think it needs a splash of water to not be such a kick in the throat. Definitely a new favorite Scotch up there with after Laphroaig 10/QC, Glenmorangie Signet, Balvenie Caribbean Cask, etc. A distinct pine scent mixes interestingly with the Islay medicine flavor and is my biggest draw to this (if one can have "spirit plants" instead of "spirit animals", then pines are mine). There's peat, but not a whole lot, and that bitter/dark orange zest flavor that's in many other Scotches. Still being surprised at how much variety there is in Scotch whisky. Salty finish, w/the bitter orange zest thing lingering, and spiciness coming out. Perhaps the saltiest I've ever had. Weird, and great.

I am soon to be drinking scotch. From Costco. Namely, Kirkland 25 Year Speyside Single Malt. The price was absurdly low, for a 25-year single malt. Either this is going to have been a genius purchase or it's going to taste like something crawled into the cask and died. Will report back either way.

REPORT, "Kirkland Signature Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky, Aged 25 Years; Bourbon Cask Matured

Neat:
Mildly sweet
Baked apple
Faint caramel
Heat
Slightly medicinal finish

With a few drops of water:
Additional flavor of maple syrup
Less apple
Flavor of peach, almost peach brandy, develops

Not bad at all. I will be having another glass this evening.

Firestone Walker Pivo Hoppy Pils

Haven't had this one before. Firestone is generally known for their ales, not their lagers. I'm not normally a big Pils drinker, but this is quite nice! It is hoppy in the traditional European Pils sense -- floral and lightly spicy. A bit more hop in the nose than the typical Euro import. Would buy again.

Another Bombay sapphire, it's not really a good drink to me but i grew up on it so it's a nostalgia thing I guess.

The way it functioned was very interesting. When the Drink button was pressed it made an instant but highly detailed examination of the subject's taste buds, a spectroscopic analysis of the subject's metabolism and then sent tiny experimental signals down the neural pathways to the taste centers of the subject's brain to see what was likely to go down well. However, no one knew quite why it did this because it invariably delivered a cupful of liquid that was almost, but not quite, entirely unlike tea.

Not right now, because it's working hours. But last night I was attempting to recreate a Smoky Manhattan the a local restaurant serves. I put 1 cup of whiskey in a measuring cup and put it in my smoker for 30 minutes. It gave the whiskey a really nice smoky flavor and almost gave me what I was looking for. I think a shallow & wide pyrex container is the way to go. I think I need more surface area.

If you don't have a smoker, you can get somewhat close with 9 drops of liquid smoke, available at any supermarket.
