Either way would be "f-ing close to water."

Tonight's choice is Black & Tan. That's 153 calories each rather than 95, but it's also more flavorful and 4.6% ABV rather than 4.2%.

Just found a new favorite fall beer. Hazelnut Harvest by Rustic Road out of Kenosha, WI. This is a nice American Amber Ale that has a vanilla nutty finish. It is a good warm up before a porter or stout or as in my case, a nice lead-in to the porter/stout season (winter).

3 Blind Mice brown ale by Mother's. I think it's pretty good and it seems to have good reviews.

Samples from a pair of home brewing experiments. The homebrew club has been doing some experiments with kveik yeast, fermenting the same basic recipe with different kveik strains and at different temperatures, to evaluate the differences. My wife and I did one specific strain (Omega Hothead) at two different temperatures (70F and 95F). The one fermented at 95F is perceptibly drier, but aside from that they are very similar, with a near-identical "tropical fruit" ester profile.

Tropical Torpedo - This one is pretty tasty, as far as IPAs go. I like the combination of the hops with the mango flavor.

Jamaican Blue Mountain roast mixed with a touch of Ethiopian beans. Its a blend I mixed up for the french press. Bold, yet sweet, savory, and velvety smooth.

I got myself a french press a couple years ago, but for whatever reason I just can't get the procedure down (generally ends up overly bitter). I'm sure there's plenty of youtube videos, but I got frustrated and went back to the regular coffee machine. Never got around to giving it another shot.

A bit of Jamaica Blue Mountain that went through our drip coffeemaker. I'd rather cold-brew it but my wife (who these beans were a gift for) prefers it hot.

I sized the grounds by cinching my Hario Skerton down tight and then backing off 1.5 rotations.

Might be something as simple as the size of the grounds. If you are using preground coffee from a store, it is going to be too fine a ground for a press and you will end up drinking more of the actual bean itself causing excess bitterness. Consistency should be closer to fish food/red pepper flake in grain size up from the sandy grain you would use for drip.

A shaker bottle of Espresso Fit Frappe. It's basically an instant breakfast drink with 200mg of caffeine in it. I added some Kahlua as it's snowing and the gov has closed for the day.

I figured that was part of it. I have a grinder and took it back a couple notches for a bigger grind than usual, but it still wasn't right. Maybe I needed to go even bigger, or maybe I was using too much, etc. Just couldn't get it down, and mostly just put it away and forgot about it. Maybe I'll give it another shot one of these days.

I use the largest size I have on my grinder. I am also told that you need a pressure/burr grinder and not a blade grinder, though i doubt most people will taste a difference. If you coffee is bitter but not gritty it might be your brew method more than anything. could also be your water source, though if you don't notice it with drip coffee, that is less likely. I might back off on your steeping time. I steep mine for about 5 minutes before I plunge. last element could be water temperature. since you are heating the water yourself and not using a preset machine, it is possible you are overheating your water and thus cooking your grounds rather than steeping them. You may want to back off on the temperature and make sure you have it steaming but not boiling.

I make cold brew and yeah, you want to have larger grains for that style. I try to make it about "sea salt size", a few mm. With my little Hario Skerton grinder I cinch the screw down tight and then back off three full rotations; for drip it's 1.5 rotations, rather finer.

Boulevard Space Camper Cosmic IPA. I've never had IPA before and reviewers think this isn't a good example of the style, but it's tasty nonetheless and I'd get it again.

Been trying a few Missouri beers.

First up: Mother's Imperial Grind Coffee Stout (Guatemala Gran Quetzal). Wow, this was both different and amazingly good. Strong flavors of coffee and chocolate, and it does indeed seem to have coffee in it. Would definitely get again, and would even make a trip to another city for it. The "Guatemala" part must indicate where they sourced their coffee - there's another expression with coffee from another country that I haven't tried yet.

Boulevard Tropical Pale Ale: juicy and citrusy like the Space Camper, but milder. Pretty decent, I'd get it again.

Mother's Lil' Helper Midwest Coast IPA: I'm not super up on my beer styles, but this is more bitter than the TPA and Space Camper, less juicy, still with notes of citrus peel, so maybe a better example of a typical IPA? Not sure I'd get it again, but I wouldn't turn my nose up either.
