I never used to like it either(which is also curious considering I've got a decent amount of German in me), but now that I'm a few years away from 40 it's starting to grow on me. That, and I stopped drinking things that are cheap and bad. I don't know what you've tried so far, but it can make a big difference.

Hmm, 36% of East Asians have that (per the wiki article) - I'm half Chinese, to be specific, so that figures. On the other hand, I know other Chinese people who like alcohol - not among them I s'pose (one my age who was fooling around with that stuff for a while). Recall grandma (dad's side) saying she doesn't like it either.

It wasn't bad stuff - my dad was fine with the same things, and was specifically trying to find milder things. Tried several things while we were over in Europe a few months ago, and bleh. It feels terrible on my tongue (as does carbonated soda - I'm OK with carbonated drinks nowadays though), and I can get 5mL, maybe 10mL of a given thing down. Wine's a little better, but still doesn't taste that great to me. Mind you, I can drink half a liter of water very easily at once (and when I was working cleaning stuff in the grandparents' yard over the weekend, sweating a lot, I was doing exactly that). I do like coffee and English-style tea (i.e. milk and sugar, not a fan of Chinese style tea) though. I handle dairy just fine, fwiw (grandma/mom's side/chinese is OK with it, but only in moderation iirc).

Tea with a bit of milk.
I'm in the UK after all.

Having a small break after all day writing documentation for an internal application I've been working on for a while.

Pre-Prohibition style light lager. Nice.

Long Trail Brewing's Green Blaze. As another Vermont IPA, it's aimed directly at Heady Topper and Focal Banger. It's hoppy for sure, but does have some nice floral notes. Not as malty as either HT or FB, so it comes in at 6.5% ABV. Hops bill is Columbus, Equinox, Mosaic, & Chinook and is 60 IBU.
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I'm more concerned about the potential hangover. Hopefully it hasn't been spiked with fusels!

Current: Descheutes Pinedrops IPA.

On deck: Fullers ESB. Found a 4-pack at the local supermarket; haven't had it in a few years. Hopefully they haven't ruined it in the interim.

...and the Fullers is decent. Caramel, toasty, and bitter flavors in pleasant balance, with some earthy hops and fruity yeast fermentation character. It may be a little lighter and less complex than I remember, but it is still quite enjoyable.

Working off the leftover Green Blaze (I was on the road Weds night, now back at home and on the Model M) and still agree with my original assessment WRT Vermont IPAs. Heady Topper is the top of the heap, I often describe Focal Banger as "Heady cranked down to 80%", and Green Blaze is about a 70%. Similar flavor and nose profiles, so I'd bet JBI that the vast array of styles he's qualified to judge will soon expand to a "Vermont IPA".

Anyone tried Belhaven Scottish Ale?  It's probably my favorite go-to beer for something that isn't terribly dark.  I like the dark stuff, but not all the time.  I can't stand the hops or bitter beer, and Belhaven has very little bitterness.  It's characterized by a nutty-malty flavor.  I buy it in the big cans as those have the nitro cartidges, and pour it in a mug.

Yup, good stuff. Scottish beers in general are great for people who aren't hop-heads; the emphasis tends to be on the malt, with a lot of caramel character.

So, speaking of Scottish styles...just finished an Old Chub. A Colorado local, and totally worth the price.

They used to make it on Nitro.  It was excellent!  Sadly I can't seem to find it on Nitro anymore where I live (Minnesota), and I really did prefer it over the regular version.

I'd love a trip to Scotland, if not for the landscape then for the beer!

During the original post (not edit) you can just scroll down and you'll see the previous posts, with quote buttons.

If you want to edit an existing post to add another quote, start a reply (to the post you want to add the quote from) in a new tab, copy-paste the quote into the edit window for the existing post, and close the second tab without submitting.

I just got back from vacation in Scotland. There was a deep and broad sampling of scotch during the week, yesssir.

So tonight is one ice cube and two fingers of Isle of Jura Superstition. And after tasting them back to back, you do indeed want that little bit of water in your scotch. It does make a difference.

Dogfish 90. SWMBO left me a long list this morning and I completed it. She was kind enough to bring home a reward.

Gunna need to get me some of that. Haven't had it in months (too many other new craft beers coming out to try).

Left Hand Milk Stout on Nitro.  Anyone try this?  It's extremely drinkable.  Next to no bitterness at all.  Nice and dark, sweet, malty, and smooth.

Sounds right up my alley, and it's stocked nearby. Gonna pick it up to try on a cheat day.

@thread: pool table broken in! A (gratuitously overgenerous) friend gifted me two whiskies, knowing I like Islay stuff. We tried a Togouchi 12 Year blend which was the oakiest peaty whiskey I've yet had (the peat was not upfront, though it was there; definitely medicinal and smoky, though). I have an Ardbeg Corryvreckan unopened, waiting for their return.

Also restocked on Twinings Earl Grey since the evenings are starting to cool off (got some of their Lady Grey, too, and a creme Earl Grey to try). Currently waiting on more Death Wish coffee, and some of Peet's Major Dickason's, and I'll be set for a while as far as caffeine goes.

Currently drinking my first cup of regular coffee (not decaf) in 27 days. Found that I was having problems with coffee this summer, so I cut it (and other drinks with caffeine) out of my diet for the month of August. Did this once before, about ten years ago, for the same reasons.

If memory serves me, I'm going to be very, very wired in about half an hour.

cphite wrote:
If you don't like Laphroaig you might try Lagavulin... it's just as smoky (maybe a little more) but there are some other flavors in there that sort of balance it out.

Lagavulin tastes great - smoky, sweet, lots of interesting flavors in there.

It smells like iodine and bacon, though, and not in a good way. And I say this as a man who's bottle of Lagavulin is nearly empty. Just warning, because it will actually drive people away from you. Best enjoyed in peace and solitude.
