If you're into novelty beers and are able to go to the Minnesota State fair, head over to the Blue Barn at the heritage center next to the bus dropoff area. You'll find a rather fabulous beer from Freehouse called the Freehouse Caramel Apple π Cider-Beer. It's sweet and truly tastes like a caramel apple pie, but without completely overshadowing the beer flavors. It's easily the best food-flavored beer I've ever had. Shame it's currently only sold at the fair.

Here's the untappd page on it: https://untappd.com/b/the-freehouse-caramel-apple-pi-3-14159-cider-beer/1199128

Someone brought a cider/beer hybrid fermented with brettanomyces (a form of wild yeast which yields flavors unlike traditional brewers yeast) to the last homebrew club meeting. Interesting stuff. Definitely "coloring outside the lines".

I switch back and forth between brewing "novelty" beers and classic styles these days. Latest batch is a Guanabana IPA. :D

Drinking a Elysian Night Owl pumpkin ale, pretty tasty definitely get the pumpkin, spice blend, and with a dry finish. Almost has a slight sweetness but the bitterness stops it. I'm not beer expert so my opinion may not be spot on.

Lagunitas makes some really good beer. I was a little pissed off at them for railing against craft brewery "sellouts" for years, then doing a 180 and selling a majority stake to Heineken. At least Heineken doesn't seem to have messed with the beer; it remains consistently high caliber.

I'm having a Lagunitas myself, as it turns out -- a Lagunitas Sucks. I suppose that's another sign that Heineken is taking a mostly "hands off" approach; I really did not expect them to allow Lagunitas to continue calling one of their beers "Sucks".

Prior to that, my wife and I bottled two batches of homebrew. I drank the last <12 oz bit of each batch that wasn't enough to fill another bottle. Warm and flat, but still pretty tasty -- a Stout with pineapple and coconut, and an IPA with guanabana (tropical fruit that tastes sort of like pineapple and strawberry).

That's good news. I was mildly disappointed when I heard Coke Zero was going away, as I prefer it to the normal Diet Coke. Does it still have a hint of something spicy (I'm thinking it was cinnamon)?

I am currently having a Revolution Unsessionable Imperial IPA. As it says on the can, "100 IBUs 10% ABV". Heh. Fairly extreme stuff. As the name implies, you're generally not going to have more than one. If you're into Double/Imperial IPAs it's worth checking out.

Coffee amber ale. VERY good. I like coffee beers, but I think they're better when they're not a porter or stout based.

I've read this in several places, not that CokeTM will acknowledge, but New Coke was Diet Coke with sugar.

I just returned from a weekend in Windsor, Ontario for a wedding. The bride and groom wanted to sample local beers so we spent three days trying everything we could get our hands upon. So we did flights at:
The Grove Brewhouse (curiously, when we walked in it was all female. The entire staff and 8 customers.)
The Banded Goose located in Jack's Gastropub & Inn. Favorite pumpkin beer all weekend was here.
Brew Microbrewery.
GL Microbrewery
Craft Heads Brewering Company. Lots of good stuff here, clever names. "Brett Michaels Sucks" surprisingly didn't suck.
Rock Bottom Bar & Grill has flights of 8, with 30 beers on tap.
Hopcat in Detroit has flights of three, but 130 beers on tap.

We also hit Wolfhead Distillery and did a flight of their whiskey and vodkas. We also hit some wineries.
Oxley Estates
Muscadere Vineyards
Sprucewood Shores Estate and
Viewpointe Estate

I have never consumed as much beer in my life as I did this weekend. According to Untappd, I had 26 unique beers this weekend and According to Vivino, 14 new wines. Plus a two wiskeys and four vodkas. On the positive side, we didn't have a bad meal the entire trip.

A bit of bottled Starbucks black cold brew; I wanted to compare it against my homemade stuff. It's got a milder flavor, likely for mass-marketing reasons.

2012 Sierra Nevada Bigfoot Barleywine

The hops mellow with age, but this is still a pretty bitter/hoppy beer. Bigfoot seems to be at its best in the 4-6 year range; the rough edges have been smoothed off, but it hasn't gotten offensively oxidized yet.

Older bottles (from when they were still using screw tops) tend to be so badly oxidized that they start to take on a "soy sauce" character; they're probably better used as an ingredient in a marinade.

Hmm, not come across that one, but will check it out if I ever see it here; I am a bit of a fan of theirs, the Pale Ale is one of my go-tos in bars (and one of my old friends' absolute fave beer). Have to say, though, reading your description makes me painfully aware that despite nearly 30 years of drinking the stuff, I still don't understand beer :-?

Tonight, I'm trying (and enjoying!) a bottle of Modern Times' City of the Dead, absolutely delicious, though unusual flavour, and that's even though I normally don't go for stouts.

Yesterday, it was a can of Magic Rock's Salty Kiss, very refreshing it was too 8) and a can of Signature Brew's Nice Time which the drinking of wasn't -- I didn't even manage half the 33 cl can, far too sickly.

Larceny Bourbon.

Got this on the recommendation of a friend. Nice sippin' whiskey, and reasonably priced ($26 for the bottle). A little on the sweet side, but has enough oak to keep it from being cloying.

New Belgium's Sour Saisson.

The impression is similar to their Trippel in the first half of a swig, while the sour arrives in the second half with a kick similar to a home-brew kombucha mingled with a hint of lemon. I don't think this is a go-to option for me but the experience is certainly interesting.

That would describe a lot of New Belgium's expiremental beers IMO.

This evening I've had a Founders Backwoods Bastard, and a Revolution Unsessionable Imperial IPA. I find it amusing that there's now a backlash of sorts to the "Session IPA" trend (which was itself a backlash to the "crank up the ABV and IBUs to ridiculous levels" IPA trend). The pendulum swings...

And now we've moved on a Two Brothers Pinball Pale Ale. Something a little tamer as a nightcap.
