the official Indian food lovers thread!

Fri Mar 24, 2006 3:53 pm

yup, did a search and 25 threads were found, and nothing solely
related to indian cuisine other then stinking up yer apartments! :P

so yeah... who loves it? i mean i know many of you gerbs out there
who are against the smell, the curry, but the food is
godly and so good, u just dont have an open enuff mind to dig it...

let me define some basics:

basmati rice = most expensive flavorful rice in the world

samosa = usually a vegetarian puff made with curry, potatoes and deep fried

tamarind chutney = sweet sauce used with naan's and samosa's - yum!

naan / roti = baked bread similar to greek pita's

chicken tikka masala = most popular dish with uninformed boring americans

curry = rated from the mildest to the hottest: korma, balti, rogan josh, bhuna, dhansak, madras, pathia, vindaloo, and phaal (extremely hot).

other "curries": garam masala, maharajah style (expensive curry with
saffaron spice in it), and tandoori (similiar to smoky bbq salt, and good starter dishs for indian-food haters)

good site to purchase curry spices at: http://www.thespicehouse.com/category/p ... Powder.php

best site to purchase curry spices at: http://www.penzeys.com/cgi-bin/penzeys/ ... owder.html

best indian beer: kingfisher (lager)

best southern indian dish: masala dosai w/sambar (usually eaten in the
morning, its a large crepe with aloo/potato filling with curry) and you
dip it in the sambar (spicy veggie soup) and it's like heaven!

plz feel free to add more to this post... there's SO much more!

ibtl.

I have some Indian food lovers on my floor, I do detest the smell of curry. However I've always wanted to try it. Just no time and money for that sort of thing right now. Banquet 2 for $2 TV dinners are rocking my budget.

Ok, I edited the racism remark out of Gleek's post and Vrock's post, along with the personal attack. First off, personal attacks are lame. Second, racism is for R&P. Third, I like Indian food, so lets give this thread a chance. Any more childish behavior and its lockville.

How was telling gleek to shut up and that no one wanted to hear his crap a personal attack?

You have a PM. If you wish to talk more about the matter, PM me.

Keep the thread on topic.

Yeah I said how much I liked vindaloo in the DYMT thread because this one was locked. It's good stuff, and pretty spicy although not enough for my palate. I've never tasted the spicier one, but will have to try it sometime.

Also while Chicken Tikka Masala is probably 'Americanized' it is also a godly dish if prepared right. The creamy spicy (in taste not heat) sauce is delicious, if prepared properly.

There's an indain stall in the Burlington, MA mall food court that is surprisingly good. I _love_ curries, and they have a lamb vidoloo that turns me purple :). We make chicken curry sometimes. Pretty easy, we just buy a couple jars of curry sauce, cube the chicken and simmer it for 40 minutes.

There's another dish, I don't know the name, it's a spinach puree with cubes of very mild cheese, delicous with the curry.

Ha! Good call. Smiling on a Friday afternoon. :)

On topic: never had the opportunity to try Indian cuisine. See what happens when you live in BFE?

We were low on curry paste one night and combined two left over jars to make what I like to call Owen's KormaLoo©

It is 1-2 tbsp of vindaloo paste
1-2 tbsp of korma paste
onions
garlic
coconut milk
whatever meat you like. (if you don't have a lot of time - even if you do - bbq chickens are great, tear the chicken apart and cook it for 20 minutes in the sauce... mmmm.) I'm eating breakfast but yet still salivating.

Basically fry onions, garlic with curry paste, add chicken and then add coconut milk and mix all together, cook for a little while and then eat...

seriously one of the best curries you can make yourself.

Last time I went to an indian restaurant I think the food was bad. I was hitting the toilet before I'd finished eating my second dish!

I believe I once read, that despite being invented by an Englishman, Chicken Tikka Marsala is also the most popular Indian Dish in India.

One of the Indian grad students who shares my office loves it, as did several of my Indian co-workers at my last job.

Personally, I love it when its done fairly well. Tried to make it myself one time -- and, uh, that sucked.

Oh, and Kingfisher is made by Bud. (as is Tsing Tao and Kirin -- always just order a Budweiser at these places, its cheaper)

Because it's "the" and "official" and "thread" oh and um... "!". ( I actually typed "teh" and "1" before correcting myself.)

Anyway, Indian food is very good -- just stay away from the greasy sh*t (true for any food). :P

I was brought up in Malaysia, ie standard week had Chinese, Malay, Indian and English type meals. The treat was the American Burger when they first opened up, since that was rare had to travel 20 miles by bus to get to it. Burger and an A&W Root Beer Float. Now I live in California, every type of cuisine in the world available within 20 miles. Still love Indian food.

Same here!

I love Indian food. Just discovered a place not too far from work that does a lunchtime Indian buffet. Gotta watch that sh*t... I need to make at least a token attempt to stick to my diet!

so how or why would you want your parents, your culture, or your religion
tell you what to eat and what not to eat? live a little man! go down to
MG road or brigade road and get yerself some pizza hut, mcdonalds,
subway, or KFC even... there's just so many options!!!! do it!

life is short, so dont waste it away eating saag and paneer all yer life man!

Just a little diversion, hope it's OK with TheGleek, but I like to hear stories like this. What other American food is considered treats to non-Americans?

Pretty sure it was Birmingham for the record though Manchester's not a bad place to get one - used to live close to the 'Curry mile'. Bradford and Leeds both do decent curries as well.

Man.. you should have seen both KFC and Baskin Robbins when they opened up in Bangalore.. it was like you were going to a 5-star restaurant.. Doorman, tablecloths and everything :)

I miss the Bay Area.. best Indian food outside of India... :)

San Diego has one good restaurant, but it is insanely expensive, and comes no where close to the places in Mountain View and Sunnyvale...

Curry is simply the best food in the WORLD.

The amazing thing is that if you can't eat it all it tasts even better cold in the morning.

Personal favourite: Dansak (usually hot enough to let you feel it, no so hot it kills all the flavour)

Though for a snack those potato dosia gleek suggests are fan-bloody-tastic

doormen, the security, it's so ridiculously funny... so non-american. :P

Last friday i ate a really nice vindaloo, which is my all time favorite from that place, also had garlic naan to that.

Im also pretty fond of the slightly milder Chicken sambal masala and achar, last and least the bunch of Korma, Karai, Madras, basanti and adrak comes which i consider to be fine, but not even close to a good vindaloo or masala. But i prefer em all with chicken, never really liked beef or fish and such odd things. Lamb can be fine for some of the spicings but i generally prefer my lamb in a morb traditional herbs and garlic way.

Im sure i would really adore the phaal, but ive never seen a restuarant that has that around here. Last time i ate something incredibly hot it was vietnameese. Never found anything quite like that actually, and it disappeared from the meny shortly thereafter. People around here probably couldnt handle it.
