There are a couple of clubs fairly close to me with runways but we actually fly at a sod farm most of the time, so our runway is roughly 1/2 a mile square That plane has roughly a 2 to 1 thrust to weight ratio so it would take off vertically if you wanted to. I could comfortably fly a plane that size in an area not much bigger than a football field, room isn't so much a problem as noise is. There is one servo per elevator half on most planes this size. The elevator halves move together, the plane isn't powered up in the photo so the two sides wouldn't match unless I matched them by hand.

Naw my house has a garage door in it Actually the wings and elevators are both removable so it fits through a door easily. I most likely wont ever take the elevators off but the wings will have to come off to transport it. Thats the worst part about gas stuff having to put them together and take them apart every time you go flying.

At that size and equipment, you've nearly built an ultralight aircraft. I stare at that thing the way a cowboy probably stares at a miniature pony.

All what you are used to I guess. Too me its HUGE, to quite a few of my friends its baby size. Its roughly 30% scale. I have friends with 50 and 60% scale planes

So i finally got a video. It's pretty bad, but i was loading at a really cool place so i felt obligated to do at least something. Fire island near bay shore, new york

Still no angle mount so it's basically two minutes of me awkwardly fighting the urge to fly the way i usually do so something can be seen, which i did a terrible job at. The jello in the video is pretty bad because there's no anti vibration going on. I strapped the camera on top of the battery and took off.

Hindsight though, that high pitch whine at mild climb throttle concerns me. I'm hoping it's just a whistling nick in a prop or something. I'll check that out this weekend i guess.

Don't be too hard on yourself on the video. I thought it was actually fairly decent, especially given what you said about strapping the camera on and going. Quality is good. It was cool to see the loader coming back with a segment of pipe as you came around on the landing pass. Looks cold!

I had forgotten that yours whined like that too. Cool that makes me feel better.

Unloaded at Fernandina beach and had a lot more fun flying, but this time i finally figured out a decent setup for my camera. The only thing that still needs fixin is my flying, regardless it was amazing fun flying there.

Front left motor has had a little wiggle for a while that changing the shaft didn't fix, it finally crapped out right there. Repaired it last night so I'll try for another video later.

And here I am floundering around at near to full speed. I don't usually fly in wide open fields so I was basically flying aimlessly which looks a little weird.

I put LED's in the airplane trailer yesterday, got it wired up so that it charges a deep cycle battery while I am driving down the road, that way I will always have light.

Solar power on a remote-controlled plane would get you unlimited cruising range. 5-7 minutes if you manage the throttle would be reasonable, with reserve for a couple of go-arounds. 1200mm isn't all that big really. I'll probably fly it with 3000mAh packs to get a bit closer to 10 minutes but, in reality, that's about all you need. Much longer than that and you get tired of standing and concentrating so much, or at least I do. I've got planes that will fly 20-30 minutes on a tank and I still tend to come down after 10-12.

Lately my flying skills have reached the point where I feel limited by my current power so I'm upgrading again. Going to a smaller lighter frame with more power.

Looking at 550 grams flying weight, with at least 6,800 grams of thrust. 12-1 power to weight. My expectation of 80mph seems fairly conservative. Based on similar builds I could see speeds of up to 120 mph. I bought a gps unit which everyone considers to be fairly accurate to do some tests. It'll probably be a few weeks before I get to slap everything together but in pumped as usual for another build.

That landing was sick as hell.

It's about that time of year where my flying time gets cut down to almost nothing too. Flying and thick winter gloves don't match up very well. Neither does 30 or less Fahrenheit without gloves. Ah well.

I looked it up to be sure, but that's pretty close to the top speed of a model rocket. And it looks like it too, that thing nearly took off vertical.

My new toy. I haven't had a chance to sail it yet beyond checking it's watertight in the bath. The guy who sold it to me claimed it was late 19th early 20th century but I don't think I believe him. It's all hand made and while it's obviously got some age to it and has seen some use I don't really see how you can date it. Still I didn't buy it as an antique, I brought it to use and because I thought it is beautiful.

They are all expensive oops-es...



That picture is from a long time ago, but yes, I really did fly into a barbed wire fence -- long story. The expense of the oops is on of the reasons I have stayed away from turbines. Not that my big planes are cheaper than an intro level turbine setup, but when I have a minor oops, then chances of me being able to fix it with a little time and glue is much higher.
