Not a big sushi fan, but a veggie roll every once in a while isn't too bad. :wink:

Okay, I'll bite. I'm going to be the first on record to say that I've never had sushi in any shape/form/fashion. Enlighten me, TR. What am I missing. Can someone adequately describe taste and texture? Common misconceptions? Thanks!

TOP common misconception: SUSHI IS NOT SAFE! U CANNOT EAT TEH RAW FISH!

feh. BS. sushi is some of THE most safest food on earth. its very very
premium high grade fish that is kept under very stable temperatures.

since the fish is SO fresh, the taste differs vastly that of cooked fish.

before my anti-hate sushi campaign years ago, i vowed never to go down
the path of raw fish until some girl took me to one and poured 8 little
cups of sake down me and i was eating raw tuna, salmon, squid, shrimp,
and cooked eel before you knew it... and OH MY was it GOOD!

fyi: eel always has to be COOKED before eating, it may be COLD, but it's
still cooked, so thats just a fyi. k?

the texture differs between different types of fish, but the most common
fishies are fatty tuna (toro), and salmon... they are soft like butter and melt
in your mouth when you order them nigiri style.. if u get them in a roll,
then its like the fish is hardly there...

is that good so far?

Excellent! I learn something here every day. Hence my addiction to TR. I haven't noticed a support forum, yet.

I think I will have to try sushi. I'm all about some good salmon. I try to eat it at least twice per week. Does one have to worry about mercury in salmon as well, or is that only in tuna, swordfish, etc.?

Nope. not at all. the biggest order of sushi in one setting i have ever done
was approx 6-10 rolls along with 20-40 nigiri and sashimi as well. i have
never been so full in my entire life!

Hey, it's all good...

I've observed that even among people who like sushi, many do not care for octopus. I guess maybe the suckers are a little off-putting to most people? :lol:

You left my favorite one off the list: Ikura rolls (salmon roe).

yup. i agree. its too slimey of a fish and too chewy. ppl tend not to go
with things like the octopus, scallops (i love em), clams, eel, roe, and
that foia gras stuff. based sheerly on the nastiness factor.

the only fish i really despise is the mackeral one. its' too FISHY tasty. yuk!

yeah sorry theres FAR way too many sushi styles and types to cover in
such a short poll.. but i tried to cover some of the most common ones, but
again... it's just a basic poll :) i love teh roe too :) caviar ftw!

While I agree it can be a little chewy, it is actually not at all slimy, since the octopus is served cooked.

Octopus is ok, squid too, but only based on texture... I don't taste much of anything when it comes to them.

We've got this great place in Holland called "Unk's" and the owner used to be the head chef of the Ritz Carlton in Osaka... I don't know why a chef of his caliber came to Holland but I'm sure glad he did, last time I had the seared Tuna, it was amazing.

Edit: ...and for the record, octopus are mollusks... ;)

Toro for sure. It's the belly of the tuna, very expensive but it melts in your mouth like butter. YUM!

EDIT: BTW No rice for me, just sashimi style

Rocky Mountain Oysters, they're called around here. Can't say that I've ever tried them (or ever will), but I know quite a few that have had them. Head cheese is about the worst thing I've eaten from a cow.

Well, I encountered them in Alberta and that was the name used, though Alberta certainly has a chunk of the Rocky Mountains so probably either would work. I got fed a lot of wierd stuff as a kid. I got sick a lot too. And people wonder why I'm a picky eater today.

And taking it back to Sushi, have a look at this (4th and 5th picture down). I've tried it (and I noticed it on the specials board again last week at my favorite hundred-year-old Japanese restaurant, so it's in season) but I'll let people enjoy guessing what it is from the picture.

saki = dame desu (no, bad, do not ever say this)
sake = ii desu (good)

I love sushi and nagiri, but I tend to like fairly pedestrian things like Tuna, eel, or shrimp.

The local sushi bar makes something that they call a "Crunch Roll", which has tempura, avacado, fake crab, and mayonnaise in it, rolled in seaweed, then rolled in sushi rice with black sesame seeds on it. THIS IS THE BEST THING ON EARTH. I know it sounds nasty, but it's so. damn. good. I imagine my cholesterol goes through the roof after eating one, but I can't help it.

BTW, Japanese food isn't all sushi and Pocky (mmmmmm....Pocky). I am a very big fan of Japanes noodle dishes, like Udon and Soba. Even Japanese style Ramen is delicious. I love donburri as well. Oh, and rice balls! Don't get me started on this or I'll have to the Japanese restaurant tonight....

right clicking on those pics say tachi, but tachi is too generic of
a japanese word... so tell us then, what are those wormy-like stuff?

I don’t mind eating raw Octopus when its dead although I prefer it to be cooked. But one place I went to in Korea was serving them live or perhaps recently chopped up is the better description. I've eaten live creatures/bugs before and not had problems, but there was something about a bunch of little tentacles writhing around on a plate with a couple of octopus heads looking up at me... very strange.

I know this a topic about sushi, but I don't usually jump into this stuff without first having a bowl of miso soup and a plate of salad with ginger dressing!

I'll pass on the octopus and squid, if you don't mind. :P

Uni for me, but I can't really eat more than two or I start to get a little ill. I kicked a sea urchin when I was a kid, so I give my respects to the critter.

I believe uni has the highest flavor, but the true measure of a sushi restraunt is the tamago, egg. Of course, the tastiest was in Tokyo...

If I can't decide on what to get, I ask for a chirashi bowl, which is just about everything in the bowl. I've only ordered those bizarre rolls on occassion, because they're weird. Tried a Swamp Roll, was good, and then a 'Crunchy Wedding' which pretty much ended that experiment.

Wife's birthday is coming up, she's been mentioning Sushi for a while now. I'm just in it for the firewater, naturally.

Salmon FTW! (sushi or sashimi :D)

I went to a conveyor sushi place in Tokyo. I picked up almost every plate of salmon that came by. The chef seemed particularly fond of "battleship" sushi (most were crab+dressing or roe). They also had beef sushi. I'm not sure anyone tried that. :-?

My least favorite (aside from my one "bad" sushi restaurant experience) was some crazy roll with like 8 ingredients. Something like shrimp, crab, tuna, avacado, egg, cucumber, and a couple other things I couldn't pick out. It was simply too much.

Actually, a lot of food I had in Japan was like, well, close to home cooking. A few ingredients and spices I don't have at home (namely seaweed), but for the most part very palette-friendly food. :D

That'd be the one thing I'd eat at a sushi bar. Raw beef doesn't faze me a bit. Raw fish, OTOH? Lead me to the porcelain bus now if not sooner.
