The joys of multiple computers

Sat Aug 26, 2006 12:19 pm

As I sit here in front of my wife's computer posting this, I just find it very helpful to have more then 1 functioning computer in the house. I'm on my wife's system because I'm doing my weekly virus/adware scans (in safe mode 8) ) on my system.

So I can still surf and check on some things while my system chugs away at it's self-diagnosis.

I was just wondering how many others have more than 1 computer in the house, apartment, hut, stall, (or whatever you live in) that are used on a fairly regular basis.

Folding nodes don't count unless they are used for regular daily use too.

I have 2 right now.

My main rig is a wndows XP system.

I have a stable Linux system that I'm about to detsroy learning stuff.

I just got a motherboard for an Athlon-1500XP but I can't get it to post yet. If or when I do, I will buy a mATX case and put it in there - hook it up to the T.v. and get a wireless NIC card for it and move my wife's e-mail and stuff over to that.

Yeah . . . . .having more than 1 functional sstem is great.
. . . this is the digital projection of your mental self. . . .

My wifes compaq sempron laptop and my desktop. Its always nice especially when I get lazy and take apart my computer but don't have the energry to get it put back together. Its up for now though. The x850 xt upgrade was pretty nice for me. 130 before mir's (if I get the mir's then I will change the price that I purchased it for). It's running great.

We have four right now . My desktop , laptop, wifes desktop, and the media center. I probably have enough spare parts kicking around to build a couple more.

3 boxen:
- my own box
- my bro's box
- ad/file server

A couple years back I thought I would need more for my dev work, but VMware changes that thinking completely.

6 right now:

Main rig is an x2 3800/win2k

server is an xp 3200 also win2k

I have a Barton sempron [email protected] that folds and runs some other backgroung stuff for work.

I just built a Sempron64 (1.8 @ 2.25) to play around with windows xp64.

Wifes HP laptop.

Old Fry's quicknote (laptop but no battery) satifies all my laptop needs except airplane duty. P4 1.7.

Enough parts to build a couple more but all too slow to really use.

Drawers and drawers of cables, cards, heat sinks, power supplies, etc. Wife gonna kill me someday if I don't clean up that room.

I really don't know how I got along without all of these boxen. I always seem to need something that another operating system has or a specific bit of hardware that is in one of the other boxes. and of course they all fold when it isn't to hot here!
Nothing clever.

Currently 8 (7 are in use):

4 desktop rigs that I built of varying ages (2 Intel, 2 AMD)
2 Dell Dimension 8100s (one of these is not in use)
2 old PIII laptops (one of which is acting as a sort of wireless print server).

15 TRF nodes
18 Cass nodes.
One dual opteron office machine 244's
two e6300 C2D's complete htpc machines.

36 total right now. number varies from 30-36 depending on how many have problems at any one time.

*edit below.

I actually use two of the servers and one of the diskless nodes on a regular basis. so the actual number is 6. I use the two servers to push html results to my website, and use one of the diskless nodes once in a while for stability testing.

At college I've got my A64 box from a year ago; wherever I happen to be I have my Powerbook. My dad has a work laptop and my family never has less than two fully functioning desktop computers in the house (sometimes it's as high as four).

9 up and running, if you include my PDA (Sony Clie)-in part because I have 2 home offices. 3 Silicon Graphics dual 1GHz PIII' mothballed in the gargage.

It takes a lot of software to keep them all safe & sound. I might be the Patron Saint of Norton Systemworks. We are very careful to ensure that all software is perfectly compliant with EULA's, which in the case of Adobe products is tediuous and 'spensive.

2 "normal" machines that get used on a regular basis. One is my desktop, one is my fiance's laptop.

Also have an old Pentium 133 running as a dedicated firewall/NAT, a Pentium 100 that I don't use, and a Dell P4 Northwood that someone gave me after I determined that the hard drive in it was dead. I'm going to put my old 80GB PATA drive into it and install Debian or Ubuntu on it as soon as I find the time.

In addition, there are various CPUs, RAM, mobos, and drives around the apartment that could probably be made into systems or folding nodes if I had the motivation.

At college I have a desktop (X2 4400+ @ 2.4GHz) and a core duo laptop (1.83GHz). The desktop does the bulk of my gaming duties, while the laptop is for work and the occasional game of Guild Wars.

Just 4:

1. Opteron 165 main system (the rig in sig)
2. IDEQ 200N with XP-M 2400 backup machine
3. Thinkpad T40 running Ubuntu, main laptop
4. Thinkpad S30. Ultraportable Japan-only laptop. 10in screen, was never available in USA. I don't need it that much but couldn't make myself sell it as it's just too rare and cool. It's running Ubuntu as well.

:-?

My wife and I had a conversation about how many computers I can have, I am limited to 1 desktop and one laptop :) (I might be able to convince for a second, Might being the key word). She only wants/really needs a laptop, a second desktop would be for the kids in the end, when they get old enough. (got a ways to go, I just had my firstborn).
