Something extraordinary happened today. I purchased my first polymer, striker-fired pistol, a Taurus PT 709 Slim. It offers 7+1 rounds of 9mm in a concealable package for $250. Couldn't say no. The trigger will take some getting used to, for sure.

That was one of the ones I looked at but Taurus' reputation on QC kinda scared me off so i went with the LC9s. But man, as far as concealed carry goes....these single stack subcompact 9s are awesome.

Yeah, Taurus has had some spotty QC. To hear internet guys talk about them the guns fall apart in your hands if you hold them wrong. The truth is somewhere in the middle. Anyway I appear to have gotten a good one. Put 100 rounds through it this morning, it was quite accurate at 5 and 7 yards. Had one failure to feed (124 gr FMJ) in the first magazine which was weird, but the gun was perfect after that. Maybe it was break-in, who knows. I shot 125 gr polymer coated rounds and 124 gr FMJs through it and it was very pleasant to shoot. I need to load up some JHPs and put some defense-power rounds through it to see how it does. For $267 out the door, I'm pretty happy right now. That trigger takes getting used to though, ugh. A 1911 single action it isn't.

makes me debate between holding out for a GP 100 and one of the taurus 357's.   I've wanted a 6" barrel 357 for ages now, but damn, the rugers are like 600+

My personal take on a first gun for someone in California.  Semi-auto 22LR, Rugger 10/22 or similar is hard to beat.   However, right now might be the last chance at getting an AR15 style rifle for a while.  The 223/5.56 cartridge has a mild recoil and inexpensive ammo, AND you can get a second upper that shoots 22LR.  If you start with the Ruger 10/22 you may get bored punching holes in paper at 50 yards and then want an "adult"  rifle.  Keep in mind eventually you will want some sort of shotgun if you want to shoot Trap or Skeet.

I think Ruger makes the better .357. Taurus' .357s aren't built on as beefy a frame as the GP 100. Not to say they are bad, but the GP 100 is one of the strongest guns out there. They can be had for $575 before tax if you look.

I wanted to share this with you guys and ask for your opinions about it for a long time... and now as i found a not so good picture of it, i'll share.
This belonged to my Grandfather. I never saw him and my uncle had it until recently, I picked it up for myself. Last time my uncle checked, it was working fine.

Hmm. Looks to be a Turkish Mauser, but the Mannlicher-style front end is confusing me.

I'm going with Model 1908 Short Rifle in 7.65x53.

Yep, it's an ottoman mauser called "osmanlı filintası". It was one of Mauser's (read Germany) "donations". In the end of 1800s, beginning of 1900s, for some political reason, ottomans couldnt buy the guns officially. Germany was an ally, so they made Mauser donate those rifles. Later, Ottomans bought the rifle officially. The story of the rifle is a mistery and noone knows how my grandfather got the rifle. The rifle has ottoman inscriptions on it so we think it's been used in WW1.
I had very hard times on checks to transfer registration from my uncle because the inscriptions and numbers are in ottoman

I'm not sure I can find ammunition as 7.65x53 caliber rounds are not selling everywhere. I just clean it up once a while and check the mechanism :)

It's also called 7.65x53 Argentine or Belgian. Prvi Partizan makes in in Europe.

Yes, here in Turkey, it's a bit big caliber for standard gun shops. With my license, I think I have a box of ammo a year, for every registered gun/rifle. I'll go and check if PD has it. Prolly I'll have to fill some forms and wait for it a bit..
Oh, and I cannot get carry license. So I'll need a special permit to go to the range for firing :)

My guess is that it's a model 1909 Argentine Mauser, in the engineer carbine configuration.

The inscription on the receiver looks more like Arabic script to me than an Argentine crest, so I'm still leaning to it being an Ottoman-era Mauser.

Norma makes it too, I have half a box of Norma 180 gr loads of the stuff that I acquired when I bought my 1909 Argentine.

It looks like a Lahti, but Lahtis are semi-auto.

EDIT: It's a Boys Anti-Tank Rifle. Chambered in .55 Boys, which was based on .50 BMG.

I did some more research. The records in Police Dept. does not offer more details about the rifle.
However, after some more online digging I reached a book;
https://books.google.com.tr/books?id=Pm ... up&f=false

It says it's the same 1903 rifle, shortened for cavalry and/or artillery use. According to the sources, Standard configuration rifles are very rare as Turkish Military revised rilfes on 30s to match their then current arsenal. My uncle says, my grandfather was carrying the rifle while riding his horse, so I think he got this model because it was cavalary version of the longer rifle.

This is getting interesting. I have no intention of selling it but if it's that also has that much historical value, I must work on new precautions to preserve it for future reference.

That's pretty neat that you have a piece of family history. If you plan to shoot it, I would have a gunsmith check the headspace first. To preserve it I would disassemble it, give it a good cleaning, run an oil soaked patch down the bore, and then put a coat of paste wax on the metal. I like store my guns in silicone treated socks for a little extra protection.

Got the 9E I sent to Ruger back. They replaced the extractor and polished the barrel. Put 150 rounds downrange with it today. 2 failures to fire but they were just bad ammo; they didn't work with my CZ either.

The sights on it are not super precise, but they're large and I can shoot it both eyes open reasonably well. Keeping 10 rounds inside a 5" circle at 12 yards isn't phenomenal, but it's fine for self protection.   This and my SR9c are now both living in my pistol safe with 17 round magazines in them.  One for me, one for my wife.

Did another 30 or so through my CZ, and another 50 or so through my LC9s.   I'm thinking I'm going to sell my CZ.  as nice as it is, I'm just not as accurate with it.

Also put about 200 rounds of .22 through my revolver-started doing a cylinder of it between every magazine of my LC9, to avoid flinch. And a friend did about 100 rounds through it. That thing is gonna need a deep clean by now--about 500 rounds of WWB .22 through it so far without a cleaning

I can disassemble it but I'm not sure I can re-assemble it correctly :) on my military service (mandatory here) I was disassembling and re-assembling G3's just fine but this rifle seems a lot different. I'll look for a good gunsmith and do as you said.

How hard is it to judge a used gun?   There's a nice looking Remington  in 243 at a local pawn shop for 425. The gun *looks* nice but 243 is a apparently a bit of a barrel burner nad I don't want a rifle that's been shot out

It's an old Remington 600. Has a crap scope but I figure I'd replace it.

Also, this guys prices are random as hell.   It's the same shop I missed that 41 magnum at, and he's got a fairly nice Browning A Bolt in 300 magnum cheap, but he's also got a beat to hell Mosin for ~600 bucks, and a beat to hell Maverick 88 for 225.  I don't know how the hell he picks his prices.

Looks ugly to me, but a quick run through the various gun broker sites says $425 is on the low end of the price range assuming the bore isn't all pitted. Just remember that that short barrel means a whole lot of muzzle blast.

passed on the Remington.    Now I'm just kinda biding time.

I'm thinking of just getting a Savage Hog Hunter or Ruger Predator in 308; they both have threaded barrels so I can slap a muzzle break on it for recoil reduction.   And it's a caliber that's cheap to buy and everywhere.
