Airsoft Anyone???

Tue Jan 09, 2007 6:23 pm

Just was wondering if any of you guys play airsoft?

In case you do not know about airsoft... it is game similar to paintball ..... just without all the 12 year olds.

......
To actually be competitive in airsoft it costs about 300-400 bucks which keeps the non serious players OUT!

Instead of balls of messy paint.... airsoft uses plastic BBs. There is an honor system to call yourself out if you get hit. (it almost never becomes a problem because usually airsofters are mature). The BBs are cheap and the guns shoot full auto spewing out 20 BBs in one second!!! (the guns are mostly electric) The BBs travel anywhere from 300-450 FPS and have an effective range from 100-200 feet. To give massively extra range without increasing the FPS (making them dangerous).... the guns have a piece of rubber on the top of the barrel that puts backspin on the BBs. This is called hop-up and turns the BBs into minature airplanes that glide a good ways.

Airsoft is a GREAT alternative to paintball......

-it does not hurt NEARLY as much

-although the startup cost can be great... electricity is the power source and the ammo is DIRT cheap..... you can play ALL day for 10 bucks in ammo..... paintball cost WAAAY more than that!

-the guns are actual replicas of real guns.... even holding them you cannot hardly tell a difference between the airsoft gun and a real gun

-in my experience the players (airsoft community) are more mature

-airsoft is NOT messy like paintball!!!

-airsoft clubs are all over.... last game i went to had over 70 people!!

Airsoft has been around for ages in Japan but has now become popular in the USA. Paintball took off here in the USA mainly because paintball fields could make more MONEY by selling paint and gas.

that sounds terrible. the whole point is to secretly get your anger out by shooting peolpe so it hurts, and the paint is fuuuuuuun.

Saying that, it sounds cool, I wanna go :o

pain in airsoft and paintball is totally exagerated.....

I think that people go around bragging about how much it hurts as if they are bad ass just for playing......

the players that actually enjoy the pain because you can inflict bruises on your friend should stay away from airsoft. That is not what airsoft is all about. In my experience...... airsoft is a semi serious tactical strategy game. Many players have throat mics and there are squads that constantly work together. It is more of a creep around stealthy squad based realistic battle simulation ..... rather than a senseless spraying of paint......

there is PLENTY of action though!!! 8)

Yeah I have this really realistic airsoft pistol under my bed right now. It's just a spring though and it holds like 12 shots, so it's pretty much useless for an actual game of airsoft. But that's okay because I hate playing airsoft for a lot of reasons.

But the gun is still really neat for just shooting around at trees, and I plan on buying more sometimes in the future. This is the one I have right now:

I'm looking at this one. It's basically the same gun, but a lot fancier.

I occasionally play airsoft with my church, and it's pretty fun.

My dad actually was looking into getting an airsoft gun to dissuade the pidgins on our roof. Unfortunately his requirements were a little steep. He wanted the gun to be cheap, fully auto or at least burst, have a Weaver rail mount to fit his fancy red dot sight, and fire biodegradable bullets. I finally found one that worked, but its price was a tad steep.

Anyway, it's pretty fun, but I'd really rather a way not to have to rely on the honor system.

I can only guess as to why a church would be holding airsoft tournaments. Stereotypical government overthrow perhaps?

paintballs can and do hurt sometimes but usually it isnt that bad. I have taken a hit in the back of the head from one of my own teamates @ 18 inches i probably should have got stitches it split my scalp wide open when it hit me. It actually hit me hard enough it made my ears ring :o I will be sticking with paintball guns I dont see myself getting an airsoft anytime soon.

Yeah I wish I went into airsoft instead of paintball simply because it's so much cheaper. All the money I wasted on my markers and paintballs could get me some bada$$ airsoft guns now.

Basically paintball was too much of a hassle to play. About $20 per person per session, plus you need paint clothes, pay to fill gas, find a good playing field, etc.... With airsoft it's any where and anytime you feel like it. All you need is eye protection and charged batteries and your ready to go.

I have played both, that being said I find paintballing alot more fun. As for the cost, well I spend about $20 for a day of paintballing. We keep on the cheap because we buy the balls in bulk and we also have someone in our group who has a CO2 compressor. The only thing about paintballing I find expensive is buying quality camo gear.

I have an airsoft desert eagle that I use for paintball. It uses a gas powered clip, has a hop up kit and shoots plastic or metal BB's. It also will shoot 6mm paint. My youngest son has an electric powered MP5 navy with a supresser barrel and a airsoft Glock.

compressed air: $7 for 1 scuba tank which fill ~20 tanks
paintballs $50/2000 balls

we use compressed air; 1 tank fires ~1000 rounds. i usually use less than 500 balls a session (4-8 games) cuz we usually dont just dump. if i fire, i usually use less than 100 rounds to hit the guy.
$20 is a pretty reasonable price for a session ... and thats canadian

I usually spend around $100 US every time we go paintballing, but that is for paint and all day nitrogen for myself and three of my sons.

I love paintball. I've played it on and off for the last 10 years. Paintball is fun, but as others have said, gets really expensive.

The last time I played, we drove to a dedicated paintball field. Let's run through the checklist:

1. Gas for the 70+ mile round trip drive: $8+
2. Marker rental: $20
3. CO2 refill: $10 x 3
4. Paint: box of 2000 - split between 4 guys: $80 ($20 per)
5. Blasting your best friend in the throat as he captures your flag: Priceless

The only reason paintball gets so expensive is that organized paintball fields don't allow you to use your own paint You HAVE to buy paint from them. Bringing your own tank might cut the cost a bit, but not by that much. If organized fields allowed you to use your own paint, they wouldn't make any money.

Two of the guys I went with had their own markers - VM68's. Good guns back in their day, miles ahead of whatever rental you can get, but light years behind the other people who bring their own, modern markers. Dudes with double triggers and 500 round tanks.

I do not live in an area where we can just find our own open field/wooded area. If you can, you can cut your cost by at least half.

To the OP, thanks for the Airsoft link. I'm gonna go get one this weekend.

I picked up a gas powered Airsoft Glock a while back for a training class (the kind where you use real guns). We used the Airsoft stuff for the force-on-force training and the 360-degree shoothouse (room entry stuff.)

Interestingly, the school I went to was just starting to use Airsoft instead of Simunitions. The Airsoft is cheaper, doesn't require a special barrel and it pisses off the French. What's not to like?

When they say that they look like real guns, they're not kidding. Between the Airsoft Glock 26 and the real Glock 27 I was using for the class... weight was accurate to within a couple ounces. Balance was a little off, but not by much. It was accurate enough that my holster and magazine carriers fit for both weapons.

If anyone needs a good vendor, I used http://www.airsoftatlanta.com with good results.

While common, that's not universally true. Some of the places around here let you bring in your own paint. I imagine they may charge a bit more, but you can do it.

i love airsoft. ive never played but i love shooting my crappy $50 MP5 in my back yard at makeshift targets. that thing actually has some pretty good power to it... too bad its all plastic and stupid and single-shot.

i was thinking of getting an L96 and really getting into airsoft. whats a good company? ive found a WELL L96 with scope, collapsable bipod, clip and sling for about $140 at airsplat.com. would that be a good investment? i guess i could then use my cruddy MP5 as a backup lol.

obviously, i would be modeling my airsoft playing style to what i do in BF2, which is snipe with an L96... and nothing else.

ive found airsoft grenades. i might grab some of those as well just for the heck of it haha

I have exactly one airsoft pistol, which fires the plastic oversize BBs. Inaccurate as the dickens, but it (and two other pistols that fire standard BBs and .22 cal wadcutters, respectively) can really satisfy the urge to Shoot Stuff Up without running into municipal firearm regulations.

Ever shake up a can of cheap soda to the bursting limit, and then take potshots at it with either paintballs or wadcutters? That's a kick and a half.

Why on earth would you need a scope and bipod for an airsoft gun?

its a sniper rife. its for sniping. find some high place somewhere that most people cant see you and just confuse the heck out of people.

Are they confused by the unknown origin, or by the fact that at sniping range, you're drawing a circle with a 10-foot radius :D

Seriously curiously, though, how accurate is it at range?

Said sniper rifle is not going to be that accurate unless you power it up. At least needs 400 fps or more to get distance. Use .3 gram BBs.
