Tracking down some odd forum/server issues

Wed Jan 24, 2007 12:55 am

Sometime in the past few weeks, LicketySplit had a post that was displayed before the post that he quoted. I can't seem to find the thread, so if anyone remembers where it was, please link it here.

We had another one of these that happened here:

viewtopic.php?p=659772#659772

You'll notice that the post order goes like so: 659772, 659773, and then 659770. However, the time of the posts goes from 2007-01-23 21:31:27, to 2007-01-23 21:34:13, and then 2007-01-23 22:14:03. Curious, eh?

Anyways, if you see more of these things happen, post them here so we can keep track and try to figure out a cause. Once was interesting, twice is likely a problem. Thanks in advance.

The cause almost has to be the clock in the server. Perhaps it's losing time, but syncing to NTP on a schedule, so every time it syncs there's the possibility for posts to get out of order. Maybe the battery on the motherboard is going bad?

What're loads like?
Please don't edit my signature for me. Thanks.

Are you sure it's not just Lickety, messing with the space-time continuum?

How could something be in the DB to quote, yet get entered at a later time?

Are you using more than one Web/Forum Server? Time for some apps is calculated at the client layer not the db layer which frequently causes this sort of problem.

I don't have the DB tools to look, but it's in a thread where Shintai, Lickety and me all posted (it's probably talking about some system build or Conroe, but don't quote me on that). Still that is a lot of threads though, I cannot remember which one.

Thanks. We had a server issue on that day (Jan. 3) and we had a server issue last night. So I think that ties up where the source of the problem was.
