Just saw Fast & Furious 3: Tokyo Drift

Wed Feb 07, 2007 4:56 pm

Oh gawd, they took a Shelby (most beautiful car ever) and put some blown NOS-sucking Nissan powerplant in there, and RICER RIMS for extra credit.

I must go vomit, bbl.

I liked the first one.

The second one was pretty dumb, but Ludacris makes me laugh.

The third (I haven't seen it) makes me want to blow my head off, conceptually.

And you're right, I dream of owning a Shelby someday, and restoring it myself. Too bad it's so damn impossible to get ahold of fastbacks too, at least without blowing a down payment on a house to do it *chuckle*

The movie was stupid, but the Aussie girl was hot.

Out of all 3, the 1st was the best, the 3rd comes in 2nd for it being a stand alone script not dependent upon the previous movies for plot, and the 2nd movie just blew chunks.

While being a 67 Mustang owner myself, I cringed at the thought of what they did to that poor car, but from a story standpoint, it's really acceptable. The Stang was sitting abandoned in the USAF base with no engine. Early in the movie, a skyline gets trashed hard, but the engine and drive train are ok. By the end of the movie, they got an American muscle car with no heart, and skyline with a broken everything else. They had a week to get one usable racecar for the final race, and get the suspension and engine tuned for drifting. A stock 67, simply cannot drift. So they used what was available, and made one whole car. It may have been an abortion case, but it was a car none the less.

I really liked Tokyo Drift.

It was more painful seeing the car wrecked in the first movie.

Tokyo Drift was one of the biggest jokes of a movie I've ever seen. I wasn't expecting much but pretty much the whole movie made me cringe. BTW that was a Silvia they pulled the engine out of (although it was a Skyline engine). I read somewhere that for the actual drifting scenes they used a V8 Mustang but they just put the straight-six soundtrack overtop :-?

There was like, 5 mustangs they used for the movie. 2 of them actually HAD skyline motors, the rest had V8s. Not sure which was which though.

Yes I should have said "Mustangs." I did hear that they actually put the Skyline engines in the Mustangs, which was a little surprising to me at first.

The second and third I liked much better than the first, for the simple reason that the directors apparently realized that NOS is not the only way to make a car go fast. One, and to a lesser degree two, made it seem like NOS was what won or lost races, but frankly, most engine tuners eschew it for less stressful, more predictable methods. NOS is a quick and dirty way to gain horsepower, and in some cases simply re-plumbing your exhaust and opening your intake can gain you more horses without the risk of frying anything.

F&F 3 was pretty good for me. I would have loved to be one of the blokes building the cars for that film.

The two great evils of system tuning: YMMV and IIRC.

All three movies are crap. You ask why? Because when you drop into 5th from 4th you don't get a sudden acceleration that lets you p00n everyone in the world...

Oh but the rice rocketers with the oversized spoiler and the nos gauge that doesn't even do anything think you do.

As a drifters car i would take a nice M3 anyday, the balance and steering on that car is just perfect.

if you actually have a decent NOS setup, you do get a nice acceleration boost, but it also burns out your engine.

An engine can be built to take the punishment from NOS, but you're going to spend a mint on head gaskets and piston rings - money that could definitely be better used elsewhere. Generally, you can get away with NOS if you're using it infrequently, and most engines require a full rebuild after less than half a dozen shots.

That said, a co-worker of mine has an engine on the shelf in his home shop that he assembled a few months ago. It runs at ~600HP naturally aspirated, but it's got a wet-fog nitrous system hooked to a 500 shot :o for 1100HP. It's built to take the beating, with everything from racing rings to copper head gaskets.

Not if you're going flat out, but if you're cruising at eighty-ish, dropping to fourth will give you a hell of a lot more oomph than staying in fifth. Of course, in straight-track racing, there's never any reason to downshift unless something goes south on you. That move up, move down, hit NOS and win crap from F&F one was bogus, though.

All this is reigniting my itch to replumb the exhaust and intake on my HHR and maybe sneak a PTE turbo under the hood... 8) Redo the rear end and shocks, new tires, maybe a rear-wheel drive conversion... I want to see a rice racer's face when a retro wagon leaves them in the dust. I'm tired of the world thinking imports rule the aftermarket speed world.

I mean to see the first one someday, even though it looks like the type of movie I hate. For some reason, I like Vin Diesel (at least in the Riddick movies, anyway) so it can't be all bad.

I hated the first one, and thought Gone in 60 seconds was much better. The second one was bearable to watch for 2 reasons.
1) No Vin Diseal (I can't stand that guy. The only movie I like with him in it is Saving Private Ryan, and that's only becuase he gets capped)
2) Eva Mendez.

I'd only watch the third one if you paid me (of course, gummy bear bribery works too)

I did pay to see it, not on the most expensive night though. And I did go in with just expect to see some drifting and stuff. So in terms of the time I wanted to kill and what to expect, I was ok with it.

At least I got a few laughs when the n00b was struggling in drifting and hit everything in sight. :)

Haha, hilarious. I like how you justify watching the movie in a theater because it wasn't on the most expensive night (As if the couple dollars make a difference). I thought it was a decent movie and definately above and beyond the crap that was part 2.

Each film got a little bit better, in my mind. Three was reasonably accurate in terms of how one gives a 4-banger some boom - turbos and breathing, not NOS and Sparco accessories. I kind of want to see a fourth in which they really focus on the cars, and maybe even get it completely right this time.

Gone in 60 Seconds is better than the entire series put together, though.

If you pay half price or less that's a very substantial markdown. or something that's only a few bucks to begin with, a couple of bucks is a very substantial markdown.

Exactly, I would usually stick around for the re-runs on TV over the other (even worse) programs running at the same time.
