TRBBQ IV 2007 Discussion Thread - 28 July 2007

Wed Mar 28, 2007 10:51 am

Well it's that time of year to start discussing the annual BBQ plans.

I'm open to suggestions.

#1 topic to begin with: Where to have it?

Dr. Fish has offered to host this year's party at his parent's cottage in Holland, MI. Mr. Fish himself lives nearby in Zeeland, MI. Both locations are on the west coast of Michigan. It seems to be a good central location in between the Metro Detroit area and the Chicago area (where most of the attendees are from). I'm OK with this plan and think it would be a fun change of pace. Idchafee said this would be favorable to those from Chicago as it's closer to them. It would be a long drive for us Detroit-area peeps, but it's only fair considering the long drive the Chicagoans have made the last three years.

What do ya'll think about this?

Other topics: When to have it (Saturdays are best)

EDIT BY MOD - Captain Ned

Linkage to Dr. Fish's first post - viewtopic.php?p=689522#689522

Also changed the title to remove "Preliminary" and add actual BBQ date.

Unless something unforeseen happens, I'm in. Not sure about the kid (she came in 05 but not in 06). Will Amber be in the house? I cna probably browbeat Starfalcon into coming and maybe Action Jim (maybe - it depends on who else is coming).

I guess I'm doomed to never attend one of these. That's a 9+ hour drive for me. Ah well.

Same here. Although I'm from SW Michigan, I now live ~2200 miles away.
Maybe someday!

You know... it's a 10 hour drive for me, but I might actually consider making the trip.

What's an 800-mile drive (mainly through Canada)?
What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

Any chance of one outside of the midwest? Maybe one out West? There's quite a few people who just can't attend because its so far east.

For y'all out east or out west, nothing is stopping anybody from having their own, eh... ;)

Is fish still on board with this? I have 5 acres we could party on, no house yet but a porta potty should be onsite by that time. :P

I love the west side of Michigan, very nice beaches on lake michigan and a more laid back kind of people compared to the Detroit area.

If some guys from around here are going, maybe we could get a car load and head over this year.

I'll update this post as things go along...

Alright, so this thing is happening and it's going to be at my family's cottage on Lake MI (Holland area). In case of terrible weather my house is fine as an alternative and it's only a couple miles away.

The date is July 28th, I figure people can start showing up around noon. Like Fro_Bozz I'll send out PMs to the confirmed attendees a couple days before the event...

So lets get the attendance list going:

Confirmed/Probably:
Rolling20s+wife
FroBozz and family
derFunkenstein
idchafee and family
PRIME1 and wife
Gleek and wife
Xylker
Starfalcon
nulldev06
VaTech Hokie
leor
jss21382
z-man and his delicious ribs
Dposcorp+wife+son
Berserkben
oumike (aka rachsumat)

We'll work on who's bringing what later, but there will be a grill and stuff there we can use. I have no problem supplying hot dogs, burgers, chips, soda, paper plates, silverware, etc myself but anything else you guys will want to bring. Well, I'll probably also have stuff for smores on the beach... :)

The old post wrote:
I'm 99% sure everything is fine with having at the cottage. The cottage is actually 50% owned by my dad's side of the family and 50% owned by my grandfather's sister. It's right on Lake MI and pretty nice, lots of lawn (with a croquet court pretty much always set up in part of it), lots of parking, lots of sand, water, etc... Sadly we wouldn't have an internet connection there but we'd probably survive...

The other option is to have it at my house, which has all the travel benefits but without the beach (but I do have internet)... It's also probably the best option in case of rain. The garage is plenty big to hold the event, the front yard would be perfect for epic games of cornhole and the backyard is fenced in for babies to roam free. ;) Also, I've already cleared with the wife people coming inside to play Wii or whatever. :D

I'm all about having it at the beach though, I think it'd be a blast! If we can decide for sure that it will happen there I'll warn the family and get the final ok from my dad's Aunt. We should pick a date within a month though...

If the consensus is to have it at FroBozz's that's totally cool too, no hurt feelings, I'll be there either way. 8)

Yeah me too I think.
The only reason why I would reconsider Fish's offer is if lots of eastern Michiganders balk at driving across the state. I'm up for an adventure myself. Waiting to hear from Z-Man and Dposcorp and his brother BerzerkBen.

I'm interested. Would prefer to travel with other people rather then driving the 9 hours alone.

Well our Chicago buds have been doing the 5 hour thing for the last 3 years, so they will just have to suck it up.
