Stand-alone ice-maker?

Fri Aug 03, 2007 12:35 am

Ok, here's a non-tech-related thing...

I am trying to find a reasonable ice maker that can accept a direct-feed from my house's water. I will need a filter since it is well water. I want the ice maker out in the garage. Basically, I don't want to have to buy bags of ice for filling coolers and drinks outside.

Anyone know of any? I'm either finding $500 ones or small, crappy portable ones. I'm looking for something no more than, say, $200-$250, with a nice water filter.

I'm going to have the water line popped out into the garage from the basement, so once I have the machine I ought to have an endless ice supply.

We have several Manitowoc ice makers at work. They seem to be very reliable, but I might be concerned about energy usage, and they probably cost over $500 now. We paid $300 for a relatively-small 400 lb/day unit about 10 years ago.

Looking at suppliers like McMaster-Carr, even a tiny 25 lb/day unit costs $850.

eBay?
I wouldn't worry about an integrated filter as you can attach something like this pretty easily.

The cheapest unit on Manitowoc's price list is $2,300 new.

What we have today is way too much pluribus and not enough unum.

I found this ice maker that seems to be what you're after. $400.

Restaurants seem go out of business on a regular basis. You might be able to find one that is gently used at an auction locally. A restaurant supply store might be able to clue you in as to when/where they might be.

I wouldn't try and find one with an integrated filter. It's one more thing to go wrong, and parts for them may become obsolete and hard to find. A separate filter could be replaced if necessary and assure you that you'll be able to find filter cartridges in the future.

Maybe even find a used fridge with an integrated icemaker for your garage? That way you can keep LOTS of beer and pop cold too for parties and such.

I wouldn't go that route. Freezer/refrigerators are really expensive to run. The idea behind a separate ice maker is it doesn't need to be running all the time, only when it's making ice. Having a party? turn it on at noon and have 20 pounds of ice by dinner.

Thanks for all the feedback. That Waring Pro looks good, but it does not mention whether it accepts a water feed. It must accept a water feed for it to be useful to me.

The Aqua Filter page is great... the inline filter makes a lot of sense.

I think this is what I'm going to go with:

http://whynter.com/RF_Product15.htm

It does bullet-shaped ice, crushed ice, and cold water. Then I'll install an inline filter and plumb it directly when I feel like, but I already have 5 gallon water bottles that can go onto it.

Hah, nice find. Actually the lowest price I've seen too... Amazon was $399, found $380 somewhere else.

Yes, my vote goes in favour of stand-alone ice makers (countertop ice makers). I was frustrated with my Samsung refrigerator ice maker. I had to call technician every 2 months because the entire ice maker cabinet stuck with ice and it stop working. The engineer replaced my ice maker (costed approx $600) but issue was still present. Later, I bought FirstBuild Opal ice maker and I'm totally satisfied in 3 years of lifespan. The quality of ice is also better than refrigerator and power consumption is low.
So, I would recommend to go for countertop ice makers.
