Favorite Video Game Music

Mon Oct 22, 2007 10:25 am

I found a thread on this topic back from 2005, but lots of games have come out since then.

I'd like to get some opinions on the best video game music out there. My favorites have always been by Jeremy Soule. The Morrowind and Oblivion soundstracks are personal favorites of mine, but I also enjoy all three Halo soundtracks as well.

What's your favorite soundtrack? Do you have to hear it in game, or could you put on the soundtrack in the background and work around the house with it blaring away? :)

I really liked the soundtracks in Lineage II, they suited the environment well and made a good gaming atmosphere.

The song inside the Moogle cave, from Final Fantasy III. :P

Yes, Jeremy Soule have made some really memorable pieces. Morrowind, Oblivion, Dungeon Siege, Lineage II (if I recall correctly).

Another favourite is Michiru Yamane. Or more specifically, the Castlevania soundtracks, especially from Symphony of the Night and up. Awesome music.

Some other worth mentioning.... Nobuo Uematsu (FF, etc), Akira Yamaoka (Silent Hill), Jesper Kyd (Hitman)...

Heck yeah, but even better is the opera scene...for an SNES game, it's still surprisingly moving today, and it's probably partly nostalgia, but entirely awesome. The "decisive battle" behind Narshe has some really cool music, too. And the ending, espeically if you take the time to find everyone in the WoR so that you can see what happened to all of them.

Other note-able notables:

Final Fantasy VII
Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete
Disgaea: Hour of Darkness
We <3 Katamari (Katamari on the Rocks is hilarious, if you like Mog's theme)
Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete
Super Contra (10x better than the original, blasphemy to some I guess)
Streets of Rage 1 and 2 (especially 2, especially all of levels 1 and 2 and the ending)
Sonic 2 (especially the Mystic Cave zone and the Casino Night zone)
Starcraft (especially the Protoss and Radio Free Zerg)

Some of the best game music is what people have done with it after its release. The Final Fantasy Piano collections, the Black Mages albums, The Very Best of SEGA, and lots of other game CD's I have. The better-than-in-game-quality OST's included with the Lunar games were fantastic, but I give a huge thumbs-down to the OSV CD included with Final Fantasy Anthology...if I wanted the SNES version I'd play the game.
I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.

Command & Conquer.
Most any of the Jedi Knight series. John Williams just rings right.

I have been a huge fan of "The Longest Journey," soundtrack. So many different styles of music in that game and so much imagery and feeling in most every song.

I would not hesitate to choose this music as the best.

Thirded.

R6, AoE (the first2 + expansions), and C&C:RA hit the nail on the head.

Descent 2 had an awesome soundtrack, and I still have the CD floating around here somewhere. I should put it in the car and blast it while sitting in traffic.

I skimmed....too much text for me. :P

GTA....
I like San Andreas as much as Vice City and the one before it (what was that one called)? The radio commentary is funny, and there is always some background music to meet my taste of the moment.
