Is this a fake tank?

I saw this story on slashdot. I think all of the videos look fake. What do you think?

From what I recall reading, it's 1/2 scale and mostly made of wood, but the turret and gun work (compressed air) and it can putt around at 25mph.

so would you call that real or fake? It works, but it's not taking out any Tigers any time soon

I thought it looked like CG.

Kelly: Well Oddball, what do you think?
Oddball: It's a wasted trip baby. Nobody said nothing about locking horns with no Tigers.
Big Joe: Hey look, you just keep them Tigers busy and we'll take care of the rest.
Oddball: The only way I got to keep them Tigers busy is to LET THEM SHOOT HOLES IN ME!
Crapgame: Hey, Oddball, this is your hour of glory. And you're chickening out!
Oddball: To a New Yorker like you, a hero is some type of weird sandwich, not some nut who takes on three Tigers.
Kelly: Nobody's asking you to be a hero.
Oddball: No? Then YOU sit up in that turret baby.
Kelly: No, because you're gonna be up there, baby, and I'll be right outside showing you which way to go.
Oddball: Yeah?
Kelly: Yeah.
Oddball: Crazy... I mean like, so many positive waves... maybe we can't lose, you're on!

That was such a great movie, but so, so weird. It was like Keifer's dad dropped some acid and wandered in from some other movie -- the set of MASH or Easy Rider or something.

Nice, the long-barrelled 76mm main gun version. It's not a Firefly, as the muzzle brake isn't right for the British 17pdr used in the Firefly.

Using this video, watch the top of the treads as the tank moves; they shake around with the slack quite naturally. The dog at 0:35 to 0:42 is pretty well convinced there's something there. When he slams on the brakes at 2:07 and the track bunches up between the 2nd and 3rd road wheels, there's no way that's CGI.

And it's not a Panzer, it's a half-scale Tiger I.

Well if you want to get technical the tiger is know in german as the Panzer VI "Tiger".

And in German any tank can be called panzer so maybe we always call it the tiger and refer to the Panzer I,II,III, and IIII as panzers though it is not too far off.

For a mock-up of a tank, he certainly got the Christie suspension right.

BTW when I was on AD we tankers called our M1A1/A2 panzers ......./shrug.

Yeah.. Panzer is the equivalent of tank, or perhaps a more fitting translation, armour. Both panzer and armour (when talking about vehicles) is short for armoured vehicle.

I don't think the Germans used Christie suspensions, FWIW. This thing reminds me most of a Tiger.

No they didnt, the soviets mostly did. But the replication of it is pretty good on this guys mock up. Its not entirely true to form but for what its worth pretty good for a ground up project.

If that is a real model, I wonder how his steering system works. If I were making one of those I would put in controls from a modern skid steer. That would be sweet.

That's probably what he's done. You can see in the video when he spins the tank around on its axis one track is moving forward and the other in reverse.

I know I'm a little late to the party, but ... I'm ashamed of the things I would have done for something like that as a kid. :D

Too cool.

With a modern skid steer, you also have auxhillary hydraulic controls. You could, conceivably, use these to direct the turret.

That's pretty slick. And it looks real to me. If I had the $, I could see doing something like this myself. But then I don't know where I'd put it or what I'd do with it. :P No one around here uses vehicles for paintball.

The engineering and implementation are pretty impressive but was it necessary to build it as a Nazi tank? I mean anything from Centurion to T34 would be just as cool.

It's cool, get over it. I know someone who thinks WWII German stuff is neat, but he's not a Nazi.

It's not like he built a replica gas chamber or something.
