I'm debating on if I should bring my 11 year old son or not. He's seriously into PCs, but I'm not sure if it's age appropriate or not...

...then again, I'd sure as heck have loved to have my dad take me to something like this!

Any opinions? Figured this is a good place to ask. :)

I suspect it wouldn't be a big deal for him to go. The rep said it's not supposed to be a wild party, but I'd say you should probably exercise extreme awareness, just as any good dad should do any any unknown situation. If there are scantily-clad booth babes or chemically-impaired participants, I'd probably make a beeline for the door.

Ok, just to confirm the GR group's plans... Shoes and Genghis are meeting at my house at 10AM tomorrow. We're taking Genghis' Jeep and we're heading toward Ikea first, thinking we'll get there around 1:00 EST. Before we hit Ikea we'll meet Ian somewhere nearby for lunch (or we can delay lunch a meet Ian near Fry's), I've txted him asking for advice as to where. From there it's a quick jump to Fry's (where we'll hopefully spend far more time than Ikea ;)). After that, if there's time, I'd really like to get to the aquarium store I mentioned, especially since it's pretty close to the AMD event... Then we chill with the 1337 AMD cr3w and party like rock-stars with the aforementioned booth babes while saving the world by testing hardware with our mad analytical skillz. 8)

Sound about right?

Just wrote to Simon at AMD about the Chicago event tonight and thought I'd pass this along:

"The event is all ages. You are entitled to one guest. We have an open bar."

There was some more, but the above was "the official line" so I figure it's cool to post publicly. Thought some might be glad to hear about the open bar. ;) (Not me, I'm driving)

Lol, since when did Rosati's serve food?

There are a lot better places to eat in the area.

chinese -- PF Chang's
general -- corner bakery, stonewood alehouse, houlihan's, John Barleycorn
pizza -- california pizza kitchen (well they are pricey these days)
sandwiches -- Red Robin, Champ's
I would even choose Chipotle over Rosati's. :-?

not that I'm going!

And...then I saw Bolingbrook IKEA and not Schaumburg IKEA. Never mind.

You don't go to Chicago to get California Pizza. Take them someplace that has a foot thick Chicago style. Something that will prevent them from eating again for 10 or so hours.

 Wish I could go.

That would be fine, but there's not much pizza worth the name in either Schaumburg or Bolingbrook. THe good pizza is in the city or suburbs next to the city. Like Beggar's, Palermo's, Barraco's, etc. MMhhmm.

The only place i can stand for "true pizza" is Aurelio's, around where I live.

We are in Chicago now winding down from a day of preparation. Setup starts in the morning early.

Chicago registration starts at 6:30, doors at 7PM on Tuesday.

Chicago will be unique - we are adding a competitive element. Different than San Francisco, stepping it up a notch. We have the team in from Finland to put the goods to the test.

Travel safe. Use all of this great technology to help you find the place.

Sry man it was incredible.

So does anyone wanna know what we scored??? You wouldn't believe me anyway 8) .

The AMD Crew was absolutely a spectacular bunch of people Very knowledgeable. I must say it was pretty awesome watching the Crazy Fins and their L2N Shenanigans (Quite a talented group i might add, there's a lot more to it than you would think.)

Not to mention the Phenom 2 was quite a performer and the overclocks they obtained were very nice indeed, even on air. And the performance gaming wise (we didnt run benchmarks other than a few games..) was very comparable to the Core I7 pretty much neck and neck.

Re: To all TR readers around San Francisco, Chicago, and Boston

Overall the event was really cool, it wasn't at all like I pictured after I read Inkling's first post - but it was exactly what I should have expected. Everything was very laid back, there was an agenda but it was presented casually - however the quality of the agenda was enough that when it was time to pay attention it was natural. There were about a dozen demo rigs setup, most of them sporting Phenom IIs and 4870x2s. One was cooled with a phase changer, at least one was water cooled, and most had very large air-coolers on them. One thing we noticed was that when it came to cases and coolers there was no single vendor that seem preferred, all the regulars were present but no brand dominated in presence.

The Phenom IIs held their own against the i7 in the gaming tests that were presented, which is expected as resolution and details settings were maxed - but that was AMDs point - if you're a gamer and you want the best value, get the $300 CPU, not the $1,000 one - which again is something most of us are pretty familiar with (and while the i7-920 is $300, the platform is considerably more). What we didn't get a chance to do was run any CPU benchmarks, I should have brought notfred's F@H benchmark CD or something but I wasn't really prepared since the details were unknown until we got there. When it comes down to it I'll admit, I was enjoying myself far too much to get into the nitty gritty of running Crysis benchmarks at settings that would make the CPU the bottleneck...

Since the Boston event hasn't happened yet I won't say anything more than that it looks like AMD has a nicely competitive product to offer and one that definitely has some headroom to grow into... Ok, one more thing, I left the event will a Killer Nic, and it was one of the lesser prizes given away, so if you can make it to the Boston one tomorrow I highly recommend you do... ;)

Sorry for the crappy quality of the pictures, I only had my phone with me as well. I didn't know how open the event was going to be...

The Finn's v AMD crew overclocking contest was the highlight of the event - it's one thing to read about LN2 overclocking in some extreme forum thread, but quite another to see it done in person, with the Finn's goofing around and pouring it in their drinks and onto each other's heads no less (don't try that at home kids)... :o
