it's time, unless you see a problem.

to solder in a new VGA wire onto a monitor. the color is blue, so I assumed there would be kinks in the cable, I was correct. though, this was before the conviniance of VGA plug-ins on monitors, it's an old 19" thing, hasn't been plugged in for a few days, is it safe to open it up? I already shorted out the plugs on the bottom, so that should take care of some of the problem.

Interesting project. Got a schematic? Point me to it, I may need to do the same soon. :)

schematic? it's just soldering matching color wires, and trying to keep a high level of magnetic shielding

right now I'm just trying to replace a cable's head.... so the part that goes into the graphics card, as ther eis a MAJOR kink there, and I'm pretty sure it is the one. so I don't need to worry about high voltages either.

arg, I have run into a problem

there is a white wire coming from my monitor, but no white wire in the cable that I bought. I must think about this for a wile, should I use the purple, blue, teal, grey, or red?

It really might be better/safer to get a schematic. You can even download these from some manufacturers.

Is it possible that your missing wire is connected to the shield?

no, it's insulated.... and it runs through the cable. it's a provision

just brew it!

If you have an ohmmeter, you should be able to figure out which pin of the original cable the white wire is connected to.

(If you don't have a voltmeter/ohmmeter, you might want to consider getting one... they are generally handy things to have, if you intend to make a habit of tinkering with things at the hardware level.)

yeah, I'm doing that now, my genius friend (for whom I'm doing this for) cut the cable to the old monitor really close.
