Is Deus Ex: Mankind Divided worth getting?

Thu Oct 13, 2016 2:29 pm

OK over at GamingOnLinux they reported a month ago that Deus Ex: Mankind Divided is being ported to Linux by Feral and will be released late this year:

Is this game worth the money? It's $60 on Steam and I see that on Steam the reviews are very mixed, making me cautious about buying this game.

It's a very good game.  I don't know if it's overall better than the last one or just mainly more of the same, but I'm definitely liking it so far (haven't finished, been sidetracked by a few things.)

Wouldn't it be awesome if The Tech Report reviewed it?

Why, yes it would! Although the reviewer is a bit of a jerk.

I think it's just a language barrier. That jerk probably has to listen to people speak English all day, write articles in Spanish, and code in Portuguese.
Be careful on inserting this (or any G34 chip) into the socket. Once you pull that restraining lever, it is either a good install or a piece of silicon jewelry.

That review was fairly short.

HEY!

You can call me names all day, but I draw the line at "Spanish," comprende?

Dude, for a longer description than that, you really need to play the game :(

Here's an even shorter version: if you like exploring and side-questing, it's totally worth the cash. If you prefer to barrel through games at full speed, you'll be disappointed.

However, it's probably the best-looking game at the moment for the kind of environments the action takes place in, IMNSHO.

Yeah, Bruno, next time turn in more than "GAME FUN. THROWABLE PRINTER."

Oh, that's right. You have THROWABLE PRINTERS. The game is totally worth $180 on that alone.

My advice is to wait until the "super duper all in one" version gets released with all the DLC included for about half the current price. By the time it comes out they will have squashed a majority of the bugs and done some tweaking to the game.

This is the route I normally take when getting a new game. Every now and then I will get something on release day, or shortly after, but its pretty rare and has to be something I'm all hyped up to play.

THROWABLE PRINTER is what they should call the next Deus Ex game, because that's clearly what the series is now all about.
Do not meddle in the affairs of archers, for they are subtle and you won't hear them coming.

I think that is what I will end up doing. $60 for game is lot. However all the DLC for X-Plane 11 is like $1000. :o So I guess that is rather cheap in comparison.

I can't comment on whether the game is worth it or not but for new games always check out greenmangaming.  They have "VIP" deals (which are available to anyone with a free account) that make a lot of new games cheaper.  Mankind Divided is $43.19 right now for example.

As a a less forgiving gamer, I've also been waiting to dive in to this this fractured future after enjoying Human Revolution

So as a broad overview--for someone who doesn't like disappointment--what is the State of the game??

Specifically, has Mankind Divided had enough polish since Release so you could state that the whole has been significantly improved?
Have the Devs' follow-up work resulted in decent performance improvements or patches that address some of the frailties of the game?

Sure the developer liaison has this Post History, but added all together has the work from Eidos Montreal lifted the experience or added slickness and smoothness before I dip my toes in??

In my opinion, yes. The game got patched during my time reviewing it, and I followed the patch history for a while after that.

While I can't speak for everyone, the biggest issues I encountered were reported as fixed in subsequent patch notes, so my take is that it should be fine now.
