Quake 2 has got to be my favorite game ever. I bet I played Q2 through a dozen times and it is still on top shelf of desk not in the closet with the other forgotten games. I have purchased a few games since, trying to replace Q2 but I have never found the satisfaction I got from it. I have ran across some good ones like Serious Sam, Half Life, Star Trek and the like but they just don't have that Quake 2 feel. I was so anticipating Quake 3 and was dissappointed when I got it. Don't get me wrong, I spent hours in CTF multiplayer, but it wasn't a contiuation of Q2 which I was kinda expecting.

So is ID done with FPS? Should I give up hope in ID and look elsewhere? Am I just getting old and the new generation wants multiplayer? Is FPS dead?

My 2 cents.

The Q2 railgun was perfect... and I spent a lot of time on our dorm networks playing coop and deathmatch, but the game still didn't do it for me. It had no mood, no atmosphere. What Quake 3 lacks in innovative gameplay it makes up with absolutely nailing deathmatch. That and the models/levels are awe inspiring.

id finished? Not likely. While I don't anticipate Doom 3 to be a giant innovative leap forward in terms of gameplay, I fully expect a scary, immersive, and chilling environment to play around in and hopefully scare myself silly with. If they can nail down a great story, even better, but I'd be happy to spend a few hours with my jaw dragging on the floor.

Wait a while for Unreal 2, this game will realy rock. Oh, and also try Max Payne it's a very cool FPS without multiplayer. And ofcourse you must try Return to Castle Wolfenstein it's a very very nice game.

And Quake 3 sucks indeed.

I've played some Unreal 2, and the engine doesn't look too thrilling. Think Unreal Tournament patch 5000 and you get my impression. Good to see real 32bit color, finally.

I got it! We need an Epic game on Carmack's new engine! Hell, maybe Romero will crawl back to iD and we can have the Quake3/4 that should've been. Quake II part 2 on the Doom3 engine.

Went down to CompUSA today and picked myself up a copy of Return to Castle Wolfenstien. Nice good feel to it. Just what I'm looking for in a FPS.

Uhh not to nitpick (which I am anyways) but Max Payne isn't a first person shooter but plays very much like one.

I think your wish will come true with Q4. It will indeed be a continuation of Q2. Not done by Romero, though. But by Raven, I think.

Raven = good poop. I actually prefer them to Romero by a long shot. iD needs *somebody* who thinks 'storyline' before they think 'engine'. It's not that iD's current crop is abd or idjits or anything, it's jsut that they tend to get wrapped up in the 3D and forget the story.

just to add here, but I think it was Raven who did the Sega Saturn conversion of Doom, whilst the Saturn (in the right hands) could do any FPS better than the PS1 (see Exhumed, Duke Nukem, Quake), they managed to get the frame rate on the Doom ONE conversion down to about 10fps or so...

The PS never even got Quake... and as for Quake 2 on the PS... *cough*mid-level*cough*loading*cough* hehe

Not that I loved the Saturn or anything, I only owned one ,

I have to say that half-life really got me.

I still fire it up every now and then for some marine-hunting. And those head crabs in the dark...

On the other hand, my favorite multi-player map is in Q2, it's called railgun wars (by dave waters, I can send it to anyone who wants it). A small arena, with catwalks and instant death below, and either a railgun or a blaster. Nothing like having armor but getting blasted into space in mid-jump...

Quake2 is simply the best "teamplay deathmatch" game ever. One, who's played online fps's, should understand, what I mean. Perfect balance between weapons, perfect physics. And last, but not least - the BEST dm/duel/tp map ever created in the history of the world, Q2DM1.

I've been playing RTCW and it has blown me away. The single player game is much better than what I read about. As far as Quake, I have mainly played Quake 3 but never touched the single player game. Seemed pretty pointless. Some of the mods (Quake Fortress and ThreeWave) are very good. I am looking forward to Medal of Honor and Elder Scrolls 3 in the next month or two.

Quake 2 was the last really fun multiplayer deathmatch game I played. I especially enjoyed the Lithium2 mod, with the runes and the grappling hooks. Back in the day in college we'd waste a weekend LANing just playing Quake2.

WOlfenstein is a great game, but it lacks a lot in terms of length. The game is way too short and the levels are really simple. The original wolfenstein had more complex levels and was a much longer game.

Man Vrock and I used to waste so much time playing against others on Quake II (instead of studying in college). Brings back the good ole days. I was so disappointed with QIII and I am longing for the days when you could rail some guy on the run. In fact I am feeling nostalgic that I might just go home and load up QII and play it.
