PS4 Future

Fri May 19, 2017 11:45 am

So, my wife has decided she wants a PS4. She says it's for me, but I'm not the one that'll be using it the most.

Our PS3 has been showing its age for a while as it has difficulty loading discs. (It'll load them, but it needs to be fed juuuuuuuuussssst right.)

So, one of the reasons we want the PS4 is to play BluRay discs, but before I throw down a sizeable chunk of change on it, what's the likeliness of 4K BluRay support in the near term?

If it's going to get support for them sooner rather than later, I'll wait. Otherwise, she's quite keen on getting it so we can play Drawful and Guitar Hero.

$300 Sony UBP-X800 vs. $550 Oppo UDP-203 vs. $400 Sony PlayStation 4 Pro... Is this for movies or for games?

I don't think it can support 4K Blu-Ray discs. The hardware isn't in it, from what I've read so far.

The PS4 standard can't even output 4K. Your console choices for 4K in the future are Xbone, PS4 Pro (which also doesn't have 4K BD support yet that I know of), or (later this year) Scorpio.

BTW, all the Jackbox games (since you bring up Drawful) are a ton of fun. Fibbage is hysterical even with two players.

They just released a new hardware revision in the PS4 Pro last year, so I can't see them doing that again for at least another year.

If you want gaming and 4K Blu Ray, you will have to go with an Xbox One Scorpio.

Best bet is probably just to buy a PS4 slim bundle for as cheap as possible and then just get a 4K blu ray player when they become more mainstream and affordable.

Yeah, I doubt you'll see 4K BR support for at least another few years. Xbone Scorpio does/will support 4K UHD only with the upcoming console so at least there's that. Any possibility you'd want to migrate to MS?

It uses the exact same drive from the basic PS4, the only thing they really changed was the motherboard and psu. Most likely it was to keep the PS4 Pro from ending up a repeat of the extremely high PS3 prices, and also maybe not to cannibalize their 4k Bluray player lines.

Xbox One S already has the 4K Blu-Ray Player and upscaler so that's not true. (I think the og X1 BR player is getting updated to support 4K too, but I'm not actually sure if/when.)

But the base hardware is still pretty close to the original so it's not as impressive a gaming machine.

Xbox One S looks interesting.

I've never owned an Xbox.

I know that my PS3 games won't be compatible with the PS4, so I'm not concerned about that. And, I don't really play console games because we just have the one TV. If I'm home, my wife is usually home, and she will want to watch something.

She does like Guitar Hero, so she was interested in that.

I've had two Xbone failures. The first was the disc drive died about 3 months out of warranty, and a couple months later the hard drive crashed. It would power on but not detect the internal drive where the system software was. The second one died in-warranty. Controllers couldn't connect either via wireless or USB. As soon as Microsoft replaced it, I sold it on eBay and used the proceeds along with trade-in credit on my PS4 to get the PS4 Pro.

Basic question: do you have a 4K TV to play those Blurays?
The Model M is not for the faint of heart. You either like them or hate them.

That's the first I've heard of anyone having failures. Weird.

Mine will probably be on movie watching duty from here on out...no real need for it otherwise. (My Pro should show up today but I have no idea when/if to expect the guy :/ )

This is Sony we are talking about. The PS3's blu-ray support was a major selling point. The fact that they didnt include it is not a mistake. I think its way too early for UHD blu-ray.

- still a billion competing HDR formats out there...
- only a couple of Rec 2020 TVs out there.
- Rec 2100 just got announced. Read about new Ultra HD Forum alliance.
- The UHD Alliance's Ultra HD Premium certification requires 4k pixels, HDR and Rec2020 input, but only 90% of DCI P3 output, not even Rec 2020 output (rec 2020 is 76% of perceived human colors, DCI P3 is 54%)

Chicken and egg, but until Redbox starts offering UHD Blu-ray for rental, it doesnt exist as far as I am concerned.

Anyway, i assume Sony has a very good understanding of overall movie industry. I used my PS3 to play Blu-ray movies from Netflix and later Redbox. Where do you get UHD movies? Stuff is still too up in the air.

No.

4K player would just downscale to the TV's resolution wouldn't it?

It's a surprise to me that it's a surprise to you. Microsoft never made reliable console hardware. I went through 2 OG Xboxes, 3 Xbox 360s, and 2 XBones. I can't help it, though - their exclusives have generally been really great. Now that they're doing "plays everywhere" I don't need one. I still have access to Gears of War 4, Halo Wars 2, and Killer Instinct on my PC.

I won't deny the Xbox 360 was **** for reliability, went through several myself. I just hadn't heard of the X1 having issues yet.

(side note: the 360 fared a lot better with aftermarket cooling attachments...haven't felt the need to go there yet on my X1)

Well, the one with the failed disc drive was a launch-era unit, and that was apparently an issue, but it didn't show up until much later for me.

Ahh. I didn't get mine until the Sunset Overdrive bundle. (Then again I don't really use the disc drive. Heh.)
