Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

Sun Jul 23, 2017 8:44 pm

Now I'm and now wondering with the outrageous prices of GPUs now if that will end up killing off or doing some major damage to PC gaming? I mean I would I would be pissed off if I couldn't play new games at 2560x1600 considering how much I paid for my display or if I would have to pay an arm and leg to be able to do so.

I mean really I checked Newegg's prices on GPUs and even older ones like the 970 are really high. I wish this mining thing will crash and crash hard. :x

Was NVidia making obscene amounts of money when graphics cards were much more reasonably priced? Yes.
Therefore, GPU makers and graphics card assemblers could scale up production until supply and demand are again in balance at that price point and make even more total profit. What's stopping that is the three month lag between placing wafer orders and being able to ship graphics cards, along with the expectation that these mining crazes / Ponzi schemes tend to collapse in a few months, anyway.

Once NV actually has some competition above the 1060 level I expect pricing to adjust accordingly.

We'll have to see how Vega is. And hey, if it's any good, anyone want a fairly new 1070? *laugh*
Just waiting for the apocalypse. (The one on 11/7.)

Yeah but I'm highly afraid that if one coin crashes, another will just replace it and be the next fad. :(

I bet you the dirty console peasants think so.

More seriously, no. What do you suppose the average upgrade cycle is? I would imagine it's at least a year if not closer to two or three. How long has this latest mining craze lasted? A few months? Most people won't even be looking until it's over anyway, and those people who got unlucky can just wait a little longer.

I would have had my 970 for two years in Dec and I suppose I could wait another year to upgrade...

Has the price rise lasted long enough to affect the prices of prebuilt systems? Presumably the likes of Alienware and HP Omen have long term supply agreements from AMD and NVidia, so they shouldn't be particularly affected by the fact that Newegg's shipment is getting bought up by cryptominers.

Mining will sporadically affect the prices of cards that are best suited to mining. This will not "kill off" PC gaming, it will just affect which cards gamers buy, and when. Shortages on the inflationary side of a cryptocurrency bubble will be followed by a glut of cheap used cards when the bubble bursts.

Holy wild overreactions, batsmen!

BTW if you're asking a speculative question in a headline, the answer is usually no.

Prices have begun to go down. You can find a pretty decent RX 570 on office depot's website for like $210, no MIR. That's not absolutely crazy, right?

http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/199371/ROG-ROG-STRIX-RX570-4G-GAMING/?cm_cat=509611

Also, GTX 1060 3G(i)B can be had for $220 as well.

https://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&N=-1&IsNodeId=1&Description=1060&bop=And&Order=PRICE&PageSize=36

My point is that the mining craze is winding down and the days of $550 RX 570s are behind us. You just need to know where to look. CultOfMush and r/Buildapcsales are good places to start.

Re: Will high GPU prices kill off PC gaming?

If you look at "PC gaming" the most popular titles run acceptably on 5-year-old hardware, otherwise they'll run at 1080p60 with a mix of medium and high settings on one of the new budget $100-$150 cards like the RX560 or GTX1050.

So yeah, the $200+ GPU market may have gone to hell because of the cryptocurrency mining craze, but the part of the PC gaming market that was at risk of being killed off by console gamers is the $500 desktop PC with an AMD APU or some low-dollar OEM dGPU.

If they're not buying new $400+ Windows 10 office PCs, people are still picking up $250 refurb desktops with i3's in them and slinging a sub-75W wonder like the RX560 or GTX1050 into them. People likely need the PC anyway and it's just easier to install Steam and throw a $100 GPU into it than it is to spend $400 on a console.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

I scoff at your question and replace it with something that people care about!

Will Video kill the Radio Star?

WELL WILL IT!?!?!!?

When will augmented reality headsets become mainstream, and exactly how much will it cost?

Will drones soon replace the stork for delivering babies?

What's the best color for motherboards?

How many wipes is enough?

Why would anyone care about what color their motherboard is?

Never, too much risk of lead poisoning.

Black, of course.

5 if you don't post on Internet forums, 8 if you do.

Na.....he's right. In 2027 they move the decimal point one place to the left to avoid needing to reprint all US currency in circulation. Then they do it again in 2039.
