It was ID's predecessor to DOOM and pretty much jump started all the 3D first-person shooter style games.

I downloaded it last night (45GB?). I'm looking forward to giving it a whirl this weekend.

So you're refusing to put together a Windows box (or dual-boot) to play games you know you would probably enjoy, just to make a political statement about the OS market?
whm1974 wrote:Well it's not so much a political statement as I simply don't like Windows, period.

TBF, I can sympathize with this POV. I hate Windows, particularly Windows 10.
Due to this game, and Windows' gaming environment being so dumb that hardware OEMs are required to revise and release drivers specifically for each game, and AMD's inability to test drivers before releasing them, I spent 3 hours last night working to get my machine's Windows OE back to the point it was in the afternoon ... because it turns out that (OT rant)
- AMD Crimson 17.10.2 and 17.10.3 introduce support for, and improve performance of, this game (respectively) but ... do not work at all in Windows 10 1607 Anniversary Update. They install, but fail to work after a reboot.
- The driver installs have done something to the system, the boot process went up to 20-40 minutes.
- The driver option for Clean Uninstall renders the system unable to output video at all.
- The driver's created Restore Point didn't work properly.
- Windows no longer has a option for the user to hit F8 for Advanced Startup, so no quick debugging via 20 years of experience for me.
- Access to advanced startup can be possible from the OE (if you can boot to it) but is via the modern Settings app ... except over Remote Desktop, when that section is missing entirely. WTH, Microsoft?
- Access to advanced startup can apparently be possible from the OE (if you can boot to it) via holding Shift while choosing Restart ... this also does not work from Remote Desktop (at least from the iOS app).
- Access to advanced startup can be possible from boot media (if you cannot boot to the OE) ... except if your boot media is a different version of Windows 10, then computer says no.
- Without Advanced Startup available, and with only boot media it won't play with (I had 1507 and 1703), let it try to boot right? Even though it would take half an hour, it'll
- succeed (with no video output), or
- fail (with BSODs, 2 different ones yesterday) and then try to Automatic Repair itself. Yay? No. This tried to take approximately a million years, and failed in the end. Resetting the machine seemed to reset the counter, so it went back into trying to boot normally until it again decided it needed to do an Automatic Repain -- no Advanced Startup for me -- which failed again after sitting there forever ...
If this were a single-user system, I would have been tempted to rage quit swear off Windows entirely at 1 a.m.

Sounds good to me, right you are. I hear they're really cheap right now /s

Lordhawkwind wrote:I got it at the same price too. Running a 7700K at 4.7 and Vega 64 I get over 100fps at 1440p all settings at the highest and it's a blast. It has it's own FPS counter but if you enable it it breaks the freesync counter. Go figure. Using the 17.10.3 drivers
ptsant wrote:I'm curious, what is the Freesync counter? I usually really on Steam's fps counter but for non-steam games I'd like to have an alternative. I have a Freesync monitor and a RX480.
Thanks

One interesting thing I noticed was that with full detail performance metrics enabled the CPU redlined on a pretty regular basis despite ideal green GPU usage. After a minute I realized that the CPU was bored, with 16 threads feeding a graphics card and none of them reliably utilized more than around 40%, with average values in the 15-25% range. Time to jump to a GTX 1070 soon, I reckon.
