I've always enjoyed the Wolfenstein series games ever since the DOS days:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdcnQISuF_Y

It was ID's predecessor to DOOM and pretty much jump started all the 3D first-person shooter style games.

Whoa, did not know Wolfenstein goes back even further into the 1980's. I played a little bit on Apple II's but it was mainly only this game:

Really looking forward to this. Tried to finish off Wolfenstein: The Old Blood recently, but it wouldn't play with current AMD drivers on Windows 10 because of an in-driver "optimization" which drops it to 17-19 FPS regardless of settings; only affects Skylake CPUs and modern GCN (post-480) cards -- unless I rename the binary and re-import into Steam as a non-Steam game  (calling any AMD driver people lurking!)

Copy pasta the specs of the new game, as had hoped to see them here when I clicked into this thread:

Minimum

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 1400/AMD FX-8350/Intel Core i5-3570/Intel Core i7-3770 or better
  • GPU: AMD Radeon R9 290 4GB/NVIDIA GTX 770 4GB or better
  • RAM: 8 GB
  • OS: Win7, 8.1, or 10 (64-Bit versions)
  • Storage: 55GB
  • Additional Requirements: Steam account and broadband internet connection for activation and installation
AMD GPU drivers no longer support Windows 8.1

Recommended

  • CPU: AMD FX-9370/Intel Core i7-4770 or better
  • GPU: AMD Radeon RX 470 4GB/NVIDIA GTX 1060 6GB or better
  • RAM: 16 GB
  • OS: Win7, 8.1, or 10 64-Bit
  • Storage: 55GB
  • Additional Requirements: Steam account and broadband internet connection for activation and installation
AMD GPU drivers no longer support Windows 8.1

The reviews are in and they are, for the most part, extremely positive. Here is what Ars had to say:

"Fans of the predecessor should snap this up ASAP. More casual shooter fans should tread cautiously."

I downloaded it last night (45GB?). I'm looking forward to giving it a whirl this weekend.

PSA: currently cheaper on cdkeys.com, I just got it for £28.99 vs £39.99 on Steam direct, a 27.5% saving 8)

41.2 GB download, yay, going to take an hour +

Anyone running G-SYNC should upgrade to the 388.10 drivers.

I was seeing my FPS capped at 60 under the 388.00 drivers. The 388.10 drivers fixed the bug.

I would still be buying ID games if they were still porting them to Linux, but sadly they quit doing that a long time ago.

So you're refusing to put together a Windows box (or dual-boot) to play games you know you would probably enjoy, just to make a political statement about the OS market?

Well it's not so much a political statement as I simply don't like Windows, period.

TBF, I can sympathize with this POV. I hate Windows, particularly Windows 10.

Due to this game, and Windows' gaming environment being so dumb that hardware OEMs are required to revise and release drivers specifically for each game, and AMD's inability to test drivers before releasing them, I spent 3 hours last night working to get my machine's Windows OE back to the point it was in the afternoon ... because it turns out that (OT rant)

  1. AMD Crimson 17.10.2 and 17.10.3 introduce support for, and improve performance of, this game (respectively) but ... do not work at all in Windows 10 1607 Anniversary Update. They install, but fail to work after a reboot.
  2. The driver installs have done something to the system, the boot process went up to 20-40 minutes.
  3. The driver option for Clean Uninstall renders the system unable to output video at all.
  4. The driver's created Restore Point didn't work properly.
  5. Windows no longer has a option for the user to hit F8 for Advanced Startup, so no quick debugging via 20 years of experience for me.
  6. Access to advanced startup can be possible from the OE (if you can boot to it) but is via the modern Settings app ... except over Remote Desktop, when that section is missing entirely. WTH, Microsoft?
  7. Access to advanced startup can apparently be possible from the OE (if you can boot to it) via holding Shift while choosing Restart ... this also does not work from Remote Desktop (at least from the iOS app).
  8. Access to advanced startup can be possible from boot media (if you cannot boot to the OE) ... except if your boot media is a different version of Windows 10, then computer says no.
  9. Without Advanced Startup available, and with only boot media it won't play with (I had 1507 and 1703), let it try to boot right? Even though it would take half an hour, it'll
    1. succeed (with no video output), or
    2. fail (with BSODs, 2 different ones yesterday) and then try to Automatic Repair itself. Yay? No. This tried to take approximately a million years, and failed in the end. Resetting the machine seemed to reset the counter, so it went back into trying to boot normally until it again decided it needed to do an Automatic Repain -- no Advanced Startup for me -- which failed again after sitting there forever ...

If this were a single-user system, I would have been tempted to rage quit swear off Windows entirely at 1 a.m. :x

If this game Just and any others that you play were on Linux, would you switch and tell the other users just deal with it and get use to it? Just a thought.... :)

[rant]
Am I the only one who keeps being annoyed at those new game titles?
Battlefield 2, Star Wars: Battlefront 2, Wolfenstein 2...
Why, just why put that number there when it is just plainly incorrect?
Battlefield 2 and battlefront 2 where both released in 2005, Wolfenstein 2 in 1984...
Why not just call it "Wolfenstein: The New Colossus", if they think Wolfenstein IX is too much? This just feels like they try to had the great legacy of this series.

And even if they would start counting from 1 again,
it would be Wolfenstein III, as this is a successor to both The new order as well as The old blood.
[/rant]

It does look liek an awesome game I'd want to play when I get my pc back up and running though... my Radeon 6870 died 3 months ago and with current availability and prices in the Netherlands it is hard to find a suitable replacement card... now sadly running a passive Geforce 9600..

I got it at the same price too. Running a 7700K at 4.7 and Vega 64 I get over 100fps at 1440p all settings at the highest and it's a blast. It has it's own FPS counter but if you enable it it breaks the freesync counter. Go figure. Using the 17.10.3 drivers

Id's recent games work well in Wine when not DRMed, and AFAICT Id doesn't keep heavy DRM applied for very long after a game's release.

I'm with you there. I have a Win10 dual-boot now (Planetside 2's anticheat won't run in Wine), and whenever possible I'd still rather use Wine than boot Windows.

Well yeah, I dislike Windows too. But I'm actually putting together a Windows 10 system (first Windows box in nearly a decade that isn't for someone else) to get back into a little gaming. Hopefully I can just upgrade one of my spare Windows 7 licenses instead of buying it fresh.
Nostalgia isn't what it used to be.

Windows is the best OS for gaming. That is enough for me.

To get work done I use Linux/macOS/iOS.

I'm curious, what is the Freesync counter? I usually really on Steam's fps counter but for non-steam games I'd like to have an alternative. I have a Freesync monitor and a RX480.

Thanks

I fired this up yesterday (got a key on Kinguin for $36) and got into the intro. I'm looking forward to digging in - I with the new Ryzen/Vega APUs were out so I could game while on work travel, I've been waiting to get a new laptop that had some basic low-res gaming chops.

My G-SYNC display has its own FPS counter that is enabled via the displays internal settings. Your display should have something similar.

I'm well into the game at this point. Performance has been excellent even on my ancient 3770K based gaming rig. Much of the credit goes to the use of Vulkan.

Stupid game has been updated since I last had time to play, v 1.0.2 requires 17.10.3 which totally doesn't work on Windows 10 1607

Why do I bother?

@topinto, you may want to try this:

Highlight game in Library -> right-click "Properties" -> click "Set Launch Options" - enter +r_disableDriverVersionCheck 1"

You'd better be quick with that, they won't upgrade from 7 licenses for much longer.

Also be prepared to be upset. As a Linux user who only tolerates Windows 7, you're probably going to be horrified with Windows 10. I'm assuming you like Linux because it's open, flexible, customisable, and fully controllable. Those are my reasons for loving Linux, anyway.

Say goodbye to most/all of that - Windows 10 is pretty much a 20GB SaaS product these days.

Thanks, nice tip, but I didn't get a chance to try this. I gave up and bumped the box from 1607 to 1703, so I could actually install a post-17.10.1 Radeon driver and it actually worked.

Am not happy with either AMD (this is what release notes are for!) or Machine Games (it works on 17.10.1 perfectly well thanks).

Works a treat on my Ryzen 1700 with GTX 1050 Ti at 1080p, hovering around 60 fps with the High detail preset. One interesting thing I noticed was that with full detail performance metrics enabled the CPU redlined on a pretty regular basis despite ideal green GPU usage. After a minute I realized that the CPU was bored, with 16 threads feeding a graphics card and none of them reliably utilized more than around 40%, with average values in the 15-25% range. Time to jump to a GTX 1070 soon, I reckon.

So I am guessing my GTX 645 is not quite going to cut it... :D
