Can we talk about Doki Doki Literature Club?

It's been one of the nicest surprises I've played all year. It masquerades as a dating simulator and steadily progresses into something I can only describe as abject surreal horror, with a strong emotional element. It's free, it's on Steam, and I can't really recommend it enough.

Isn't that usually what happens with most forms of online dating? :P

From personal experience: yes! But this game is another friggin' level...

What is their business model if the game is free? How do they make money?

They take donations at http://ddlc.moe , and a gift of $10 or more gets you a copy of the soundtrack, wallpapers, and a neat little description of the development process.

I'll give it a shot - add to steam queue.

Also, online dating through social media worked for me. The little bit I tried the online dating apps, not so good. Married 9 years now.

I would get this game if there was a Linux version available. :(

Check the download page - click past the donation box - and it looks like the Linux version is bundled with Windows. May not work through Steam yet, but you're not left in the cold.

Thanks. I'll check the game out. Any nudity in the game?

Not a bit, believe it or not. Its priorities are elsewhere.

Even so the game still could show some nudity.

You are free to take that up with the developer, I guess. I didn't think actual dating games chock full o' boobs were in short supply elsewhere, though.

I didn't get it when I played it initially having no information on the game (this might be a minor spoiler)...
after the game goes down the dark path, it is expected to glitch. It is not a bug on your system. Keep playing through it!
It just never crossed my mind what they were doing.

mmm hentai

I'd like to try this but I'm so far behind on visual novels and RPGs it's kinda ridiculous. I only pretend I know what I'm doing.

Speaking of hentai, any such games where you can play as the demon or monster?

I have the money for new board games, video games, and books. Just not the energy and time to use them. There's so much out there these days.

DDLC's free and pretty short... I took my time with my first playthrough and it only took a couple hours.

I'm pretty sure I'm not supposed to talk about that sort of stuff here.

Though yes. I've seen plenty of that.

GAMES??? So far so the only Hentai or Hentai like games I've seen you can only play as the hero. Granted this looking at what Steam has available, only what Valve allows?

Steam is not quite the place for adult content. A lot of it is censored or all ages versions. Their rules seem to have changed multiple times but you can't tell what is and isn't the best version based on their selection.

Surely there are more suitable venues for this sort of discussion?

Agreed. I wasn't really hoping for a deep dive into the genres this game is explicitly undermining and satirizing.

Adult-oriented gaming that you are beginning to discuss in needless detail. There are other forums in which your inquiries are more likely to bear fruit...

The best subversion is done unrecognized by those you wish to subvert.

OK we need an adult-oriented gaming subforum here then?

I wasn't planning on adding any details heh. I was mainly discussing Steam and similar content.

I don't expect any direct adult content discussion on normal forums...we have Reddit or plenty of weirder venues for that. :)

I played the game last month or so, because I've seen a lot of discussions about it. After playing the game myself and replaying (almost necessary to do so) a couple times, I can see the hype around it. It's kinda funny in it's own way.
