Cheap Co-Op Games - LAN Capable?

Sun Feb 25, 2018 9:44 pm

So I'm back on the search for some good games to play Co-Op with the wife, LAN would be nice as our internet connection can be decent at night, but crap during the day (see AT&T cellular internet). Any recommendations?

Trying to avoid spending $60 on a game, unless it really is that amazing. I found some recommendations for Trine 2, she seemed interested but not sure about how much play we will get out of that. She loves playing Planetside 2 with me, but the fights have to be good and of course it is an FPS, so latency matters.

Open to suggestions.

We went through a Diablo 3 phase, we actually Beta tested when I got a bunch of keys. It was a blast and we both love it. Diablo 2 was apart of my fondest gaming moments when I was a kid. The wife was new to the Diablo world and I tried to get her into D2 but there just was nothing there due to graphics. D3 was for sure a blast to her.

I'm downloading Path of Exile as it looks to be a lot like Diablo 3. Hopefully it will have replay value, something that Diablo sort of lost as you were playing the same acts. I realize PoE also has acts, just not sure to what extent that story dictates the replay value though.

the poe story....I don't know it super well. You can actually just ignore it and smash mobs. Also so you know poe is far more complicated in terms of character design than diablo. This is either a good or bad thing depending on how much freedom you like to have to fail or succeed. There are of course build guides made by players if you're more into killing mobs than designing builds.

A few worth looking into:

Grim Dawn (the real Diablo 2 sequel, this is my top recommendation if that is the sort of game you're after)
Terraria
Windward
Neverwinter Nights 1/2 (old but still a very strong mod community)
Divinity: Original Sin 1/2

All of these games are LAN friendly and also come in DRM-free format, i.e. no need to be logged in to some random Internet account to play locally.

Some of my Star Citizen clan members are really into Osiris: New Dawn but I don't know how the multiplayer feature works. They also like Warframe and Destiny, but those are Internet only.

Starcraft (the original) is free now. You can play 2 vs X all you want. It'll even work on that craptastic internet you have since it was designed for 56K modems.

If you like Diablo, have a look at Torchlight and Torchlight 2.

I played Trine 2 Co-op with my brother recently. Pretty sure it was <$10 on steam (we don't typically play games that cost more than $10). I'd definitely recommend it. I think its got good play time without dragging on. There aren't a ton of upgrades/abilities, so the game really focuses on puzzle solving. Very teamwork oriented.

We played Torchlight 2 before Trine 2. Also a good game that I'd recommend. Different style than Trine 2 (not sure what your wife likes). Also a good amount of play time for <$10. Obviously this is all about player abilities and upgrades.

While it's not LAN capable, we sunk over 200 hours into Warframe (free-to-play) about 5 years ago. The devs have still been adding to it, and there's a LOT more to it than when I played. I dabbled in it ~8 months ago because my account was still active, was a little challenging to figure out what to do, kinda felt like in the pursuit of adding more content, it's become too complex, but maybe that's just me being crotchety.

Portal/Portal2 of course.

Borderlands 2

Left 4 Dead 2 is awesome in co-op mode, and also supports LAN. It's an older game, so it's often on sale for dirt cheap (my buddy picked it up for $1.99 a week ago, but it's back up to $19.99 now.

Guild Wars 2 is free to play now, but it definitely requires an internet connection. Pings up to 150 ms are mostly tolerable in PvE, if not for serious PvP, where you’d like to be under 60 ms.

StarCraft 2 is also Free to play. The single player Wings of Liberty is also F2P. Online play has everything unlocked and available.

In other words, you can now play all of StarCraft II’s multiplayer, every Co-op Commander, and the entire first campaign in the single-player story, for free.

This times a million. We (my group of friends) were still playing LAN Brood War in 2010-2012. Super fun.

This is essentially Diablo 2.5. My group of friends played it a fair bit over the past few years. Pretty good game. Do recommend.

Star Wars Battlefront (2015) is cheap now and has co-op missions if you like running/gunning and some vehicular play. There is still a good amount of online players for the standard maps but the DLC maps are not very active anymore. I play it with my kids a lot. We also enjoyed the Trine series 1, 2, and 3. Recently I purchased Human: Fall Flat on a Steam sale and it is a fun diversion for a physics-based puzzle map with the kids or just playing hide and seek.
