Hellblade: Game freezing on psychosis warning page

Wed Jul 04, 2018 12:34 pm

Screen and audio freezing on psychosis warning page. Tried rolling back to multiple earlier driver versions (GTX 960), disabling full screen optimizations for .exe, etc. Oddest thing is that there's nothing obvious that even triggered this freezing--I successfully played for about an hour the other day after buying the game, with latest drivers and windows updates, and apart from the odd game crash or two, everything was good. Now I can't even make it past the warning screen. Windows 10.

Any suggestions? Thanks, all!

* Verify game files.

* Check the game's folders for any log files that might say something about the problem.

* Check Windows' event viewer for anything relevant.

* Reinstall the game (verifying game files doesn't always cover all the bases).

* Memtest / prime95 / stress-testing of your choice.

* Run it in a terminal and see if it says anything useful (this is the first thing I'd do on Linux, but I have no idea how useful it tends to be on Windows).

* What does its CPU usage look like when it freezes? (This may not be meaningful without knowing how many logical cores / threads your CPU has.)

It isn't unlikely that those crashes the other day were the same problem in a slightly different form, FWIW. Were they freezes too, or straight back to the desktop? If left at this freeze for a while, will the game eventually exit on its own?

Nah, once it freezes it's requiring a system restart. I just found out it's actually all of my games that are freezing like this. So I'm suspecting something to do with the steam client and the 1803 windows update. I had thought that I successfully ran Hellblade even after that update, but I could be wrong about the timeline--or not, windows 10 seems to do plenty of incomprehensible stuff.

Thanks for the troubleshooting tips, will keep looking.

In that case, stress-testing should be the top of the list.

Maybe only one thread is needed. (1 min apart? sheesh)

Ah, yeah, my bad. I had thought it was this particular game, but found out it's all of them. So, not really the same issue in that sense.

Got it, rolling back to 381.65 Geforce drivers made it work. Apparently there's some bug with Nvidia drivers of recent months and the Unreal Engine? No idea--I guess that's what I get for updating everything...
