List of Old LAN Games

Mon Mar 18, 2019 12:34 pm

I'm trying to come up with the ultimate list of older games that actually allow you to play them in old school local LAN matches. So far I've come up with the below list but please let me know ones I might be missing! I'm trying to expand my collection!

Starcraft 1
Warcraft 2
Warcraft 3 + Expansion
Diablo 1
Diablo 2 + Expansion
Rune
Doom 2
Red Alert 2 + Expansion
C & C Generals + Expansion
Dungeon Siege 2 + Expansion
Carmageddon 2000
Age of Empires 1 + Expansion
Age of Empires 2 + Expansion/Forgotten Kingdoms
Fallout Tactics
Age of Mythology + Expansion
Company of Heroes + Expansion
Unreal Tournament 2004
Unreal Tournament
Quake 1
Quake 2
Quake 3
Rise of Nations + Expansion
Half-Life 1
Intel i7-7700, MSI Trident, 32GB DDR4 2133mhz, Geforce 1060GTX, and Samsung Evo 1TB.

Mech Warrior 4 Mercenaries (IF you can get it to work).

EDIT: Any chance of a mini LAN party at the BBQ?

EDIT 2: As another thought to Edit 1, any chance we can compile a list of what is free now or on GoG? Starcraft and TF2 are both free (and you can do local LAN party on TF2) and can be readily downloaded in Blizzard launcher and Steam.

A good number of them predate TCP/IP support and only worked with Novell's IPX/SPX. Fortunately, there's plenty of IPX/SPX to TCP/IP tunneling solutions out there.
Gigabyte X670 AORUS-ELITE AX, Raphael 7950X, 2x16GiB of G.Skill TRIDENT DDR5-5600, Sapphire RX 6900XT, Seasonic GX-850 and Fractal Define 7 (W)
Ivy Bridge 3570K, 2x4GiB of G.Skill RIPSAW DDR3-1600, Gigabyte Z77X-UD3H, Corsair CX-750M V2, and PC-7B

* Starsiege Tribes
* BzFlag
* Civilization 2 (maybe Civ1 ?? That was probably modem based...)
* Battle Chess
* Soldat
* Scorched Earth
* Lemmings ?? (Was this single-player only? I forget... it was so fun though, it should be on the list)
* Microsoft Flight Simulator (Okay, definitely single player, but strongly in the culture of video gamers back then).
* Sim City 2000
* Streets of Sim City (Twisted Metal, except inside of your Sim City)

Yeah, some of those older games were modem based.

Isn't it pretty much ALL of those that support multiplayer up until 2004 or so, and most to many also some years after that?

But here's a specific one:

Thankfully I have a couple of XP machines linked together with IPX/SPX enabled :D

For the win!

I'd also throw CounterStrike (source or 1.6) into that mix.

I'd say way after 2004. Starcraft 2 was controversial at the time for not supporting LAN play and that was 2010. I'd say anything before that probably supports LAN.

Lots of great suggestions, I'll remove my duplicates.

  • Rollcage Stage 1 or Stage 2
  • Star Wars Episode I Racer
  • Lightbikes (Eidolon Industries)

The beauty of old LAN gaming was the modding scene.
Some of my favourites:

  • Quake 1 = Quake Rally, Demolition, Painkeep, Action Quake
  • Quake 2 = Powerball, Devastator,
  • Quake 3 = CrateDM, Corkscrew, Superheroes, Proball
  • UT = Excessive, Invasion

Demolition was awesome - it was single-goal (team) deathmatch where the ball was a bomb on a timer with a vast blast radius. Score before it exploded, or rack up kills with it instead of scoring.
CrateDM was great - your player model was a crate, the map was a warehouse full of crates. Sneaky tactics for a last-man-standing game mode.
Proball - feels like a 15 year predecessor to Rocket League!
Excessive - this was what made UT as insanely fast as Q3A. It always felt like the movement and damage was insufficient in UT, and the Excessive mod dialled everything up to 11.
Congratulations, you've noticed that this year's signature is based on outdated internet memes; CLICK HERE NOW to experience this unforgettable phenomenon. This sentence is just filler and as irrelevant as my signature.

In that vein, Revolt was fantastic. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Re-Volt

Total Annihilation!

Supreme Commander too, if you want something newer than '97.

Half-Life 1 and all the mods dude!

Counterstrike doesn't even need mentioning, and Action Half-Life was our jam at many LAN parties.

If you're interested in more than just PvP, then there's always Freelancer, too. (Some mods (Discovery?) also support local server+LAN play too) - I have that on my LAN, not that my second computer gets used much these days...
It's 15 parsecs to Kessel, we've replaced the negative power-coupling, it's dark and we're wearing welding goggles. Hit it.

Halo CE (Custom Edition) was slightly newer than many of the entries so far, but we killed a number of hours on that one. It was one of the last LAN party games I played before my peer group aged out of the habit.

Never too late to be young. I held a LAN party last year. Good time. Sadly only 8 people but still enough for some 4v4 action.

Oh man, I forgot how much fun we had with AVP as well.
AVP2 was more stable, from a networking point of view, and the multiplayer was better fleshed out too.
