Re: Borderlands 3

Wed Apr 03, 2019 8:31 am

We have a release date and details.

September 13, 2019. PC exclusive to Epic Games Store until April 2020. 4 editions available.

Standard: just the game, $60
Deluxe: game, exclusive skins, and boost loot, $80
Super Deluxe: everything from Deluxe, plus 4 campaign DLC packs (season pass), $100
Diamond Loot Chest: everything from Super Deluxe plus tons of physical loot, $250

So...I think some people will have issues...

Also, we're supposed to get more info (like gameplay?) on May 1.

Update: added timed exclusivity note.
On second thought, let's not go to TechReport. Tis a silly place.

Another Diablo 3 vibe even the exclusive e-store period. This does not bode well.

MOTHERF**KER.

I guess I'm sitting this one out. I was hyped, now I'm just cranky. Maybe a Steam sale when it falls to a few bucks and after I eventually forgive Gearbox for this idiocy. I'm still clinging to a hope it's an April Fool's joke.

There is quite a bit of backlash about this decision. Here's to hoping it's enough to change their minds.

Heh. I played BL1 and 2 mostly because my coop gamer friend loved them.

3 looks like it could actually be good. The first two were alright.

From everything I've seen, no, it's not a joke. Also, this is definitely a 2K decision (not a Gearbox one).

Randy appears to have been in support of it, so I at least lay some blame on him. I was a bit hasty naming Gearbox because I couldn't remember the publisher for them. :P

I'm going to wait until it's on Steam and the price is in INR and not USD. Ain't gonna pay 45 USD for a game unless it's Arma 4 or FreeSpace 3 :P

Heck, I might even wait for the inevitable GOTY edition - i got BL2's GOTY for $15 which was well worth it.

I thoroughly enjoyed BL1, BL2 and the prequel. In fact I have multiple playthroughs in BL1 and BL2, which is something I do very, very rarely. However, I'm not paying more than $60 for the full game, where full means with the DLCs. Skins and loot I don't care about, but I'm not paying $100 for a game. Extra frustration for having to install yet another store.

Sorry, it will have to be on Steam for $30.

I don't mind paying extra for a season pass for DLC. The amount of additional content they added in BL2 was well worth it, especially the mr.Torque Carnage campaign and Tiny Tina's assault. Those two combined were worth the season pass.

I'd pay the $100. I am not, however, going to install another store. I either buy the game on Steam or I don't play it

I have to admit that the DLCs were really nice for BL1 and BL2. However, I don't want to encourage $100 becoming the new norm for the full versions.

You guys are crazy. You'd pay 100 bucks for a game, literally many hours of work for most people on earth rather than just takes the literally 2 minutes it takes to install an app? I don't get it.

Yeah, if I was inclined to spend that much I'd just install the app and be done with it. The exclusive thing is annoying, but it wouldn't stop me from playing with friends if that's what we wanted to play. It really just makes me curious what Epic has in mind in the future. Incurring nerdrage at every step doesn't really sound like a long term solution for how to run the store.

Pretty much any game or movie that's been hyped up a lot acquires a "rating" before it's even released, and that's been happening for years. I understand the dude's point, but it does seem a bit disingenuous with that in mind.

I don't know why "review bombing" is being treated as if it's some kind of big, dramatic problem anyway. If they want to stop people from screwing up the ratings, but nobody wants to get involved in removing or censoring comments after they've been posted, then just don't allow comments for things which haven't been released yet. It's an online store not a discussion forum. Obviously the "reviews" are useless regardless of why they were posted.

That's just crap though. All 2K wants is more money. He can say that, but as far as I know he had nothing to do with the decision in the first place?

People review bombing are stupid, but this response is even worse.

They're review bombing older Gearbox games. They clearly can't bomb reviews for a game that isn't even on the platform (yet).

If it were available for preorder I'd already have it ready to go for April.

Previews say that it's more of the exact same, which is disappointing.

  • Humour is hit-or-miss, sometimes dated or politically-insensitive in a cringe-worthy way.
  • Gameplay is still largely clearing an area with enjoyable gunplay but then spending twice as long opening every door, drawer, cubicle, toilet seat in the area to find ammunition,
  • The vehicles are still awkward and unrealistic to drive with dated handling/physics that match BL1's decade-old model.

In saying that, they appear to have smoothed the co-op experience by removing the complications of level-differences and story progression differences, and the actual narrative and level design appears to be as detailed and varied as ever.

Here was me hoping that Gearbox had taken feedback from the previous games and brought the gameplay up to date without interfering with the narrative and gunplay that BL is renowned for. Instead, it's just going to feel like yet another Borderlands DLC. Again, that's not a bad thing (I'm still recoiling from the awesomeness of Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep) but Gearbox had a great opportunity to improve the negative aspects of the Borderlands franchise and instead did nothing at all.

It's definitely going to be a wait-and-see for me. I can imagine Christmas 2020 or 2021 picking this game up real cheap and gifting some copies to friends. I've learned with Borderlands games that you're really better off waiting for the DLC to bundled into some kind of GOTY edition.

This, 100%

Honestly, it's a dated game engine with dated gameplay mechanics and it's not reliant on a surge of popularity like most multiplayer games, so there's really no reason not to wait until the GOTY edition. I did that with the pre-sequel and regret not waiting for the GOTY of BL2, given how much content there was for that!
