Yeah, that weird vented V-notch on the top is probably because Sony has tapped out: Yes, people are -STILL- going to shove these things in containments in which both sides are blocked. FINE, YOU WIN HUMANS, the darned thing will intake at the front, and you'll have to actually get inventive in order to block it. :P

People are going to treat the notch as storage space and pile stuff in it. At least with the V shape complete blockage is less likely.

Yeah I should have said "completely block it". It's U-shaped (ish) and the vents are sloped. In order to really close it off you'd have to custom build something...

...whereas, with a ps4, there are plenty of compartments in home entertainment centers that are -JUST- big enough to snugly slide the thing in. Then, maybe even close the front door so you can't even fully hear the thing screaming itself to death.

I don't understand the resistance in using SSD for gaming consoles. It is more like "about gouda-dang time". The units are cheap enough and are leagues ahead of spinners. I'm more surprised that HDDs still persist in budget-minded laptops of all things.

The budget segment is (and always has been) a race to the bottom. Consumers tend to look at capacity before speed, so using HDDs is a good marketing strategy if your #1 goal is to move a lot of cheap systems to people who don't know any better.

TBH we're already at the point where 2.5" HDDs only make sense for portable external storage, and 3.5" HDDs only make sense if you have multiple TBs of data where keeping cost of storage down is the primary concern. </slight-overgeneralization>

Margins aren't there anymore. Actually, SSDs are cheaper per unit and would incentivize people in the budget market to get external HDDs (higher margins) if they need more capacity.

Like I said, most people look only at capacity. They see "500GB" and immediately think it is better than the "250GB" one, even though one is HDD and the other is SSD.

I was thinking more along the lines of marketing types using the removal of HDDs as an upsell tactic and to make laptops cheaper/simpler to make. Similar to how the removal of 3.5mm jack on some smartphones was done entirely to upsell smartphone peripherals.

Yeah, I have to keep reminding my friends / family that SSDs are on the order of 100x to 1000x faster in IOPS. So you're paying for speed, not for capacity.

Kitty: "Oooh, nice little bed for me." (nestles in to the nice warm V, feeling the air intakes on both sides gently sucking at its fur as it dozes off for the afternoon...)

Purfect......

Purrrrrrrrrrrrfect for the retailers and Sony if it normally takes more than the warranty period for the fur to kill the machine.
