I second that. Also, having a remake of System Shock 2 with a more recent engine would be nice. SS2 had awesome gameplay, a nice storyline, col sound, almost everything you might want - except for that it had really crappy graphics. But SS2 with something like Doom3's shadows and crispness - that sounds like a very wet dream...

Thinking of older games, I would like to see Ballblazer in new glory - not that better optics and sound could improve on the superb gameplay. Another game that really deserves a remake is California Games. Yeah, and Legacy of the Ancients. Oh, and Last Ninja. (But isn't there a remake project of the latter going on somewhere?)

Edit:

Oh no! I missed the most obvious one, glad that other people corrected this terrible mistake: I never, ever understood why there wasn't a more recent version to the X-Wing / Tie-Fighter series. I mean, there's hardly any other game with such a background story (and such a sex appeal as to be able to destroy the Death Star - or even better: shoot Luke while he attempts to do so ;) ).

Day of the Tentacle with hires graphics would also be nice.

Think I've seen it at http://www.the-underdogs.org. Seems like it's a legal download, but not sure, though.

Abandonware isn't legal. Unless they have clear permission from the copyright holders (not necessary the people who made the game) then it's copyright infringement.

IIRC, there are copyright laws that specifically make public domain of software a certain number of years after the company who made it is dissolved.
So how fast is your car, anyway?

Oh, about 1200mhz.

I have spent many hours playing games like Xwing and Xwing vs Tie Fighter. I would jump at the chance of playing a remake.

Other games I would like to see come back include the Xcom series and Total Annihilation. I am sure I could come up with more to add but my memory fails me.

edit There is a free X-com remake called UFO Alien Invasion http://ufo.myexp.de/

Rygar, without a doubt.

I think they tried it already, but from what I've heard it wasn't that great. A good Rygar remake would be awesome.

There is already someone working on making total annihalation using the UT2004 engine.

I don't know if it counts as retro enough...but Shogo from monolith was one of my all time favs...funny, mecha style, with fun fast gameplay and multiplayer. Remake that one in a heartbeat.

I second that.

I'll add a third voice. If any game deserves to be updated, it's System Shock.

Also, having a remake of System Shock 2 with a more recent engine would be nice.

I'd settle for a SS3, if "they" were going to do this. ;)

Ascendancy... anyone remember that one? Turn-based conquer the galaxy with a ton of playable races and some pretty decent technology trees. It must be ten years old by now.

I'd love to see it re-done with tech trees specific to each playable race, and obviously updated AI, graphics (homeworld-esque graphics would be awesome for it) and all that stuff.

deruberhanyok: Yeah, I loved playing Ascendancy. In fact, even to this day I'll occasionally fire it up and play a game. Although my 4X time has most recently been spent playing Space Empires: IV. It's moved past both Ascendancy and Master of Orion 2 as my favorite 4X game.

The original Master of Orion was the shizzle on my 386 with 4mb of ram. It should definitely be remade.

I think Master of Orion 2 was a let down.

My Old C-64 faves:

Archon I

Paradroid

Populous I

Imperium Galacticum

I'd love to see these remade, but without losing the simplicity that made them so playable in exchange for updated eye-candy. I still play these on C-64 emus like Frodo. Hell, I still have 3 C-64's at home in a box. :o
