The Idiocy of World War 2 Games

Okay....ENOUGH with the World War 2 games already, as gamers we've experienced every battle the particular war had to offer, we've died countless times at the hands of the Nazis, Russians, Allies and Japanese. We've dominated objective A and B and sometimes C, stolen the flag, destroyed the panzerwaufers, defused the mines, driven the token moveable vehicles-tanks, killed the officers, dodged the snipers, radioed in for artillery support, breached the sea wall, stormed the beach, bombed the airstrip on more than one occasion. ENOUGH is ENOUGH now, STOP with the world war 2 games, we've 'been there DONE THAT'.

FFS YOU STUPID DEVELOPERS WE DONT CARE WHAT THE GFX ARE LIKE, GAMEPLAY! GAMEPLAY! GAMEPLAY! That's what it's all about, if it's not fun it's not worth playing, we don't play games 'just because' of the better GFX, there's a multitude of factors that come into play here but when I see games coming out that are recycled crap it makes me angry, what are developers feeding to people, why can't they put some thoughtful intelligence to good use and come up with something creative, fun to play with lasting appeal, why do they have to constantly recycle the same old gameplay over...and over....and over....AND OVER again year after year after year, what is the matter with developers?! do they not get it?

Why play a game like Call of Duty 2 with only, let's face it, marginally better GFX than CoD1 but same ol' gameplay, same objectives, same crappy AI. same ridiculous endless AI respawns.
This really goes for alot of games out there and MODS coming out, enough is enough now, keplar please. If there are any developers reading this please take this to heart, it's ridiculous to go on churning out the same tasteless butter time after time. Please now. Really. I'm tired of it, gamers are tired of it, your wives are tired of it and would really like you to have sex with you.

There's nothing new that WW2 developers will come out with that hasn't already been played to pieces.

I think that Civil War segement is itching for some action.

I do agree that gameplay is what really matters. That is why many we still return to good, old classics like Masters of Magic, Starcraft and so forth despite their "ancient" graphics. Their gameplay still pwns 90% of what is currently out there in the market.

So, what you really mean is that you're sick of World War II first-person shooters, right? I got sick of FPS games in general a long time ago and haven't seriously played one since, um, Quake II I think. I'd guess there might be too many RTS-type WWII games too, but I haven't paid that much attention.

I'd actually really like to see a Pacific-theatre WWII submarine or even surface ship simulation, in the vein of the old but good Silent Service series.

And yes, good gameplay is more important than pretty graphics.

I actually like COD2, but I also feel that one of those games goes a long way; they're fun, but who needs hundreds of 'em? So do what I do and buy one or two FPS.
Frankly, I think your critiques go for FPS in general, not just the WWII ones; it's all "kill some Nazi/Alien/Demon/Spy/Secerat Gov't thingy" and take this or that"
That's what every FPS I've played boils down to. They can set it whereever they like, it's all similar. Sometimes there's some new technique to be used (stealth creeping!) but it's all similar on a broad level.

http://www.silenthunteriii.com/ - not pacific, but newer than silent service. ;)

Zenith, custom dictates that I ask what side you'd play on.

I thought I read that silenthunterIV should be in the Pacific-threatre. I would also really like to see is a surface ship game for WWII in the Pacific-threatre. Some on the lines of Task Force 1942. Man that was a great game.

Civil war FPS would probably suck. Lets all stand in a line shoot, reload, shoot, reload, ... Until everyone is dead or we rush with bayonets. Sounds like great fun. I guess you could be with the cavalry still doesn't seem like a good FPS.

Let's play that one where we steal land and rape Native Americans. Someone make that one.

Any ideas on a title? How about branding and marketing?

Reloading time of muskets = teh suck.

The Western is another underused genre that, thus far, has only had fair-to-middling offerings. If done right, could be great. Although I envision more of an FPS/RPG hybrid than a pure FPS experience.

I want more space based strategy games like Homeworld. Hundreds of ships fighters all flying around in 3D!

I for one am really sick of FPS games. It all started when I was playing Doom 3.... the game that made me realize how stupid this all was.

But I kept on at it. I was playing Quake 4.... and suddenly the clouds cleared and all I saw was my little mouse pointer trying to track down that pesky little X button flying all around my desktop.

And then I knew that was all it was ever going to be. Clicking a moving object. Entirely killed the experience, and I blame D3 and Q4 for it.

Halo was fun, but it still can't stop me from turning my back on the genre.

It seems silly that you'd abandon FPS games based on the crappiness of id tech demos as "games". There's innovation and entertainment to be found in the genre, just usually not from iD.

YES! Bout 12 friends and I have a "Starcraft night" every friday.... get together with all the newest calculators, high end gaming rigs, old laptops, anything SC will run on and go nuts playing game after game and remembering less and less as the night goes on (The Admiral Horatio is a true friend of the ladies!).

I dont know, but Quake 4 was pretty decent, and seems that D3:ROE isn't as bad as D3 from rumors.

Of course UT beats the crap out of everything...

All the games you list are part of a rather narrow segment of FPS games. Saying you're tired of all FPSes because a couple of debatably bad games in a narrow segment bore the crap out of you is taking things too far, IMO.

How about "Custer's Revenge"?

I do agree that WWII has been overdone in FPS games. Maybe the Korean war? Would be pretty similar though. Or how about a WWI game - you could hours of gameplay just trying to move 100 yards to the next trench.

Or heck, do a game about some of the minor wars that have happened in the last 100 years. The Falklands would make for a pretty neat air/water fighting sim, or maybe do a game with the tank battles the Soviets and the PRC had during their minor border war back in the '60's. Or maybe a game covering the Chinese invasion of Vietnam in '79.

Or for a really interesting one, do a game on the Soccer War Honduras & El Salvador fought back in the '60s. :)

Long live multiplayer FPS gaming.

I immersed myself in the UT2004 ONS clan scene: teams competing for ladder placement and e-Respect. In single player, when you screw up, you load up a saved game (sometimes 3 or 4 times, depending on difficulty). In a match, it's up to your team to recover, or lose the round. AI squads are nothing compared to a pre-game strategy session (held in Teamspeak) with your clanmates. When the ONS community lost players to BF2 and WoW, we created mixer tournaments, where participants underwent draft selection.

Why do I bring this up? For over a year, the only maps for competitive play were the 9 that came with UT2004. I wouldn't be surprised if I've spent more time on ONS-Torlan than anyone here has on the entire Eastern Front. It's not scenery, but competition, that motivates us to keep slogging onward. CS:S players know this all too well...

As for me, my team will represent the US against France Saturday. :)

The minor conflict game idea is neat.

I aggree, not just fps, but any multiplayer game. I still play SC all the time. The only map I like is BGH, it is a classic, I think I will still be play SC for another 10 years. My main beef with COD is no cutscences and a bland storyline, that is the only thing that motivates me to play single player games.

Yeah, I knew about the Silent Hunter series (which I why I said Pacific theatre in my original post). I just don't want to play a sim that involves captaining a Nazi submarine. So, to correct what I said before, I should say I'd like to see a submarine or surface ship simulator that lets you at least command Allied ships and/or submarines, if not both Allied and Axis (just not Axis-only), and although I'd prefer a Pacific-theatre one, I'd be content with one set in any theatre if you can command Allied forces.

I was just thinking about it in terms of the huge space battles, but you're right, it is more of a sim with some interesting trading elements built in.

Just for posterity.
