Recommend some old games

Tue May 16, 2006 7:59 am

Why? Because I have a really crap laptop... it used to run Linux, but after that little incident with the nuked USB connector, I installed W2K, and am now upgrading to XP (hopefully I can install the Yamaha XG100 SoftSynth for Final Fantasy VII PC and Windowblinds 5) and I'm looking for some games to keep it entertaining.

I have System Shock 2 on it, and the CPU fan kicks into full speed whenever I play the game. FFVII PC is a little jerky with the software renderer, and buggy with the Direct3D rendering path (how I wish I had a nVidia chip on that thing, or at least a freaking Pentium III CPU)

VIA C3 933MHz (MMX, 3Dnow)
256MB DDR2100 SDRAM
S3 ProSavage DDR (integrated into PN266T northbridge)
~20GB free. So, what do you guys say?

What genre? I've spent countless months worth of hours playing Age of Empires (the first 4 derivatives..never card for AoM and haven't played AOE3 yet) on my parents laptop. Heck, when we moved down here from Peru, I was sitting in the airport next to a power outlet playing it with a trackball, and then ran the battery out on the first couple hours of the plane flight (this was back in '01) 8)

I generally play console style RPGs, I also have Doom, Quake 1 etc... so I play the rather popular genres. I have some just ready to spring onto the hard drive. However, I would also like to try out some new strategies, Red Alert style... not Warcraft chopping down trees style. Would Warcraft 3 run well on that though?

Civilization 3 should play well enough on that machine (though end game with a lot of AI CIVs would take awhile per turn) and that game has provided me with lots of entertainment.

X-wing without a joystick. Painful. Unless you could find a USB one. *raises eyebrows*

Full Throttle, Day of the Tenticle, and Sam n Max Hit the Road.

All Lucasarts, all adventure-esque games, all very, very entertaining. I've probably played all of them 3-4 times each.
I was married in an online fantasy game once. We thought about having children, but it would severely drain my power crystals.

I'm retro already :D Actually I'm quite tired of going retro, except for the original Metal Slug, Metal Slug 5 and King Of Fighters 98. I also played Heretic... also really didn't like it.

Oh yeah! Descent 3... and Lucasarts way back before they started making Star Wars spinoffs...

An EXCELLENT adventure game you could put on that is a game called Torin's Passage.

Some old pinball games, like TimeShock and Epic Pinall would be cool. Same with older games like Jazz Jackrabbit, Duke Nukem, and Keen. There's an RPG called Hexplore, which is very good, if you can find it.

If you are looking for a tycoon style game that's actually worth playing, take a look at OpenTTD. It's a clone of Transport Tycoon Deluxe by Chris Sawyer (the rollercoaster tycoon guy) from the DOS days. I've been playing it for almost a decade.

As far as FPS go, I'd also go back and play Half-Life 1, Duke Nukem 3D, and Deus Ex (if that lappy can handle it). There are always emulators too. You could get some sweet Sega/NES/SNES action going. A good game of boogerman or rock and roll racing is always fun.

seconded. a few specific essentials to look out for:

monkey island 1+2 (i have the theme song as my ringtone, and get the occasional wide smile when it goes off)

space quest 1-5 (5th being the best, don't bother with 6 ;)

then there's inca 1+2, beneath a steel sky (had a sequel too i think), police quest series, quest for glory series, leasure suit larry series...

and if you like rpgs, you can't do much better than the complete ultima 7 (includes serpent isle). there's hundreds of hours of great gameplay there, and for modern windows compatibility check http://members.iinet.net.au/~rsd/five.html

oh, and x-com: ufo defense rocks too!

This system shoudl play *ANY* Monkey Island game. Escape from Monkey Island plays just peachy on a PII 400 with a Riva 128 (the way I did it back in 1998 or whatever it was when it was released)

As someone allready mentioned, Baldurs Gate:Tales of the sword cost. It will give you MONTHS and I mean MANY months of interesting gameplay. One of the must have games, it's shame graphics is kinda looking simple today otherwise it has the gameplay that most of new games lack. Deus Ex might be the second thing to look for, it's really awesome if you get into plot!
