They won't. It would be corperate suicide.

Heh, the PS3 itself is damn near corporate suicide.

I feel inclined to remind you that a great many people said the same thing about the price of the PS3 "OMG, it will be $299 at launch, Sony would be stupid not to!!!!111111eleventy11!!!

I doubt games will retail for $100, but I wouldn't be surprised to see $70-$80 games out there.

I'm sort of wondering about that. If they're selling the hardware at a loss, then they need games and blu-ray movies to make up the price. If games are priced at 70-80 bucks, I imagine that will hurt game sells considerably. Rentals may do very well, but I"m not at all sure how much revenue Sony gets for rentals--if it's none, or a small cut, or what. Blu-Ray movie sells *may* help offset it, but I'm still unsure how widespread adoption will be; most people with a PS3 already have a DVD player (I'd think, anyway), but they decide to go with Blu-Ray if the price isn't much extra--but if they price releases low enough to do that, it'll eat into thier profit off those considerably. They still have to recoup R&D cost on this thing after all.

I think Sony is in for a big surprise at how many people aren't going to buy the PS3.

Given the hit or miss quality of many games now days, I rarely go buy one when it hits store shelves. The same goes for consoles. With all the launch problems I've seen various consoles have over the years, why should I?

I read an article the other day that suggested HD-DVD and Blu-Ray won't "win" anytime soon. With the number of displays that are actually capable of true 1080p, and their respective price points, AND the fact that the technology is still so new and finicky... especially when coming to gaming lag, no I'm fine waiting until prices drop, reviews are out, and the systems and technology are stable and reliable. Which means I should be purchasing my PS3 in about 2-3 years.

What I'd love to see happen, given that the PS3 is a money loser, is for tons of people to buy it...and not buy games. Just rent them. Let Sony eat that 100 dollars a console. It's not that I hate Sony, I just think it'd be intresting to see the prevailing business model bite them in the ass.

The PS3 just keeps looking worse and worse. The only console I will be getting for a while is the WII.

i think 50$ is high for games.

thats a bucketload of money if you ever wanted to get more than a couple.
obviously catering to people who make more than 20,000-30,000 a year.

heck even if you can afford it, its a waste.
and if its a junk game, even more so.

Super Street Fighter II was $69.99. So was Mortal Kombat II and Phantasy Star IV. You are correct.

Of course, they were 40, 32, and 32 mbit ROM's (respectively; SuperSFII was the biggest non-CD Genesis game ever) so the manufacturing costs were high.

And N64 games were that much across the board. Again, because of the materials.

Now the price is because of development costs...doesn't matter to me though; if it's good enough, it's worth buying. Just rent before you buy.

i can understand high prices on older consoles because of the higher cost to make cartridges, but pc games are released on 25c cds, and only recently have been going upwards of 50$.

meh, i guess ebgames and ebay are going to get a lot more business from me.

Lets be reasonable SONY!!!! The PS3 is already expensive $$$ & now the games are :o! $50 - $ 60 U.S. range would be the most amount of money that I spend on game titles. If I were to choose a console system I'll rather go with the X-box 360 8).

Well, it's not just the media you're paying for; you're also subsidizing development costs, marketing costs, etc.

Development for today's hardware, console and PC both, is exhorbitant because of the sheer volume.

Of course, on a console, you're probably also paying a licensing fee to MS, Nintendo, or Sony, but that's the minority of the cost.

You should never buy a suckjob game. Rent all games first and see if they're worth buying. I've played many a crap game on my XBox. I've bought 0 of them.

I've bought a couple suckass games, but they were games that I thought were going to be great and I just "had" to get them on release day. MLB2k6 on the Xbox for example. :(

Then read revies online or in magazines. You learn to get a feel for if you agree with the editors so you can trust their judgments in the future.

Not necessarily. CoD2, Civ4 and HL2 received rave reviews and I liked them while GTA:SA and Oblivion received rave reviews too but I am not too fond of them.

Well I meant sticking with a specific author, not a general consensus.

Don't just read the conclusion, read the reviews. You liked Civ4. Great. You liked 2 shooters. Great. You didn't like 2 games with predominantly open-ended gameplay. OK, remember that. It's not exactly a secret what type of games Oblivion and GTA:SA were...

Well, it wasn't due to gameplay. It more due to the controls. I played GTA: SA using my mouse-keyboard combo. I particularly didnt like the sequence where you ride a bike. Got runover and then shot.

And Oblivion, specially cause I got attacked by monster rodents. I am not particularly fond of them. To be honest, I am not into RPG stuff. I thought Oblivion would pull me over but obviously that didn't happen. Oh well, there goes my 50$ :(

I think I remember reading somewhere that Sony didn't want rentals for it's PS3. It was somehow going to not allow stores to rent them out. That is, if I remember correctly. It was last year sometime...

I think people pointing out the previous high price of games are missing something: we've gotten used to paying much less than 80 dollars a game. Most PC games now are 50 or less. All current console games cost less, usually much less. That'll affect people, I think. If it's a choice between the Revolution with 50 dollar games, and the Xbox with 60 dollar games, and the PS3 with 70-90 dollar games, then that will just tip the scales against Sony even more. By the time you buy 9 or 10 games, that's a lot of extra cash. Maybe once it would have been normal, but now it's not. And people usually don't like it when prices go back up.

Well All I can say is Soney isn't getting my money, but neither is Nintendo. If I was to buy a console, it would be an X-box.

The most expensive game I bought for the Genesis was Phantasy Star IV. It was $99 at release! Great game, though. It was more like PS II with better graphics.

Anybody remember the Neo-Geo? Those games were like $200 or more.
