Well, today (or maybe yesterday?), Fileplanet opened up the CoH beta for all users: http://www.fileplanet.com/betas/coh_screening.aspx

They had it closed to only paying subscribers, but have now opened it. I'm waiting in line as we speak ;)

edit: link changed, thanks for the warning on that.

pete_roth: It's the best WWII RTS I've ever played. The amount of stuff to do is amazing. Me and a friend took on 2 "easy" computers (us allies, them axis), and we were locked into a stalemate for 2 hours :o...We'd make pushes to grab more territory, but they'd beat it back, they'd make pushes, we'd beat it back...it's nuts and fun. And this is only the beta!

I've been getting problems trying to conect to the online service. Anyone else getting that problem? Could just be my Comcast, as it has been horrible lately.

Naw, they are having server issues this weekend. And last weekend. From what I've read on the boards, this happens a lot on the weekends (servers getting stressed too much, I think). It's not a huge deal, you just have to wait it out to join a game. Once you get in game it's smooth as butter.

This is the most fun I've had in a long while.

Doesn't work. In fact, to me it is just as bad as before. I could barely get in before it would either kick me back to the main menu with a connection lost or freeze. :(

Relic makes some seriously good RTSs.

I am a bit worried about only two races for multiplayer, I hope it works out.

There are already teams being put together to MOD CoH like crazy. Just from posts in their "Mod Factory" forum, people are looking to make:

1) A WWI mod
2) Pacific Theater Mod
3) A 442nd mod team (?)
4) Eastern Front
5) Someone suggested a WWIII mod, but I don't see anyone jumping on it.

Why are you worried about 2 'races' (in this case, I think it's better to call them 'sides', unless you agree with Hitler ;)), anyway?

edit: Embuked, You'll like it even more when you try it. It's the best RTS I've played since Homeworld. The visual effects are spectacular, and the control is amazing. The infantry AI is...well, genius. The tanks, on the other hand...are a bit dumb :(

Was I able to join a game last night, I would have. After two patches and perhaps some ISP weirdness on my end, I was thwarted at the 11th hour (literally).

Must try again when I get back.

They are having issues client-side. They've been trying to fix it (the patches you have downloaded), and they released another one today. The lobby seems much more stable now, however, the connection problems still exist.

The reason I'm worried is that in a 3 vs 3 match with only two sides (happy?) might get boring. Also only two teams means there are only two teams to learn and and there are less variations on what strategies to use to win.

It seems like it might get boring, and I'll go back to playing DOW.

Five different sets of units/buildings/techs.

Not to mention the the Orks and Eldar are on their own sides.

I should have remembered Orks, Eldar, Imperial Guard, etc.

CoH is done by the same crew at DoW, and looks great in beta. I think it'll do well.

I know it's the same crew, and I'm sure it will be good, but I'm concerned it won't hold my attention for as long.

Maybe they'll make an expansion that fixes that problem for me.

Again, you dismiss it before you try it.

I haven't played GuildWars the last few nights to play this. It's that good.

I played the tutorials. This game is sexy. Release is slated for the 11th of next month, so I'll be picking it up. Perhaps if enough of us get it, we can do TR games (like with every other game we all play).

Yeah. I think they've finally ironed out the server connection issues, as well. I hosted on game, didn't get any connection messages while waiting for another person! I was happy. And yes, we should get some TR games going. I'm assuming they will
A) have more multiplayer maps
and
B) have BIGGER multiplayer maps

Can you imagine 5v5 or 7v7 in this game?! :o It'd be nuts and yet a lot of fun at the same time.

It'll be fun just to 3v3 even. You can divide between players who has the tank division, infantry, etc.

Tank divs. are so much fun >:D I enjoy pumping out 4 or 5 Panzer IV's, a couple of panthers, some stugs, some flakpanzers, turning on blitzkrieg and just rolling over everyone. Of course, those pesky rangers and their bazookas end up raping my tanks (along with friendly fire).

I'm trying to figure out how to counter the waves of **** I keep facing when I play. I'm thinking people don't mess with defense and forward barracks and bunkers, but put it all into getting tanks asap.

There's so much you can do with defense, defensive terrain, high ground, bunkers, buildings, but all I face are tanks and artillery that devastate my defensive lines.

I'm not a fan of the Zergling rush, and I'm hoping I can find players who like to employ other tactics than rush tanks and plow over the field.

It'd have to be a small group, kindaof like the afor mentioned TR group. It's gonna be just like every other game. People will figure out the fastest zerg they can just so their rank online goes up.

I don't like zerging either. We'll just have to lay down some anti zerg rules or something for the games. :P

Usually me and a friend of mine play together. We both build solid walls of D, with one opening where we put most of our guns.

At least, against computers.

96%!

Sun Aug 13, 2006 11:32 pm

I just got the latest mag of pcgamer and it has coh reviewed. It's hard to believe that it got a 96%. Pc gamer has only given out a 96 or above a few times in the past 5 years. If anyone wants me to write more from the review I can.
