Best non-FPS Game

Mon Dec 30, 2002 6:43 pm

Ok,

I was just at Fry's and CompUSA looking at games and was shocked at how many games are just duplicates of each other. All FPS's. I've got a few sports related games but I am looking for something that is a little more action oriented. So here is my question...

What is the best non-FPS game out there?

Other folks like these, but I haven't tried the PC versions:
Grand Theft Auto 3
Rollercoaster Tycoon 2

Action-filled but not FPS, eh? Well, maybe you'd be interested in MechWarrior. I can't remember what's out there in terms of combat sims ... do not by any means pick up Janes Attack Squadron, it's terrible. Don't know what else, though. Maybe an arcade racer in the form of Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit 2 would do it. Warcraft III is ok, the quality of the game is top notch, but see Penny Arcade about multiplayer on that :P.

If you're willing to dig through the bargain bin, here are some games from my stack that rock and aren't FPS:

Descent Freespace (there is a 2 that is also very good)
Jagged Alliance 2 (well, that might a little *too* old :P)
Need for Speed: Porsche Unleashed (not an arcade racer, more simlike)
Metal Gear Solid PC (terrible graphics, but otherwise great)
Actually, pretty much any Need for Speed (I'm only missing NFS II)
Max Payne (3rd person shooter, but great story)
WWII Fighters (amazing game for LANs)

And what I think the best FPS ever made was, is Deus Ex. That is definitely an original game.

Mafia! Mafia Mafia Mafia!

Picture GTAIII but with a story and in the 1930s with you as a mobster. Sweet! Only game to keep my attention since Dungeon Siege.

StarCraft, Warcraft III, Age of Mythology, Age Of Empires I & II, and Empire Earth.

GTA 3 is pretty fun and offers quite a bit of freedom and replay value. Starcraft is by far my favorite RTS and I still play it to this day. Played Warcraft III for about two or three days and didn't touch it after that. Hitman 2 is played from the third person perspective mostly and is quite fun to play since it actually makes you use your brain. I would also suggest Neverwinter Nights, Baulder's Gate (both of them), and Dungeon Siege if you are looking at RPG's.

I second fallout 2, a great game from the past. Starcraft is also an excellent RTS game, and Baldurs Gate is one of the better RPG's on the PC.

Another vote for StarCraft. That games still rocks. Or The Sims in its various incarnations.

I still think the old Quest games were great.
Space Quest, Kings Quest, (police quest wasnt that good), Quest for glory.

For PC, if you're not counting FPS, try strategy (Starcraft, Warcraft III, etc) or simulation (Sims, Sim City, ...) . I'm not into sports games right now.

Puzzles work similarly under any platform.

For anything different, best games being done lately are definitely for consoles. There are dancing games (paraparappa, dance dance revolution, bust a groove, ...) , platform arcades, shoot-em-ups, bomberman and clones, RPG, Survival Horror, racers ... mostly unmatched in the PC world.

Let's not count Apple gamers here :) :P

Rallisport Challenge is a great racer on the XBOX. I cant speak for the PC conversion but check some reviews.

I have Rallisport Challenge for the PC. With the Radeon 9700 Pro, set all details to maximum at 1600x1200x32 and it's better that watching WRC races on Speed Channel. With the MS ForceFeedback Wheel and pedal set, I crashed so much the first weekend after I got the game that my hands hurt. When I watched the last WRC race (from UK) that weekend, world champion Marcus Gronholm missed a turn and rolled his silver Peugot 206 in exactly the same pattern as the yellow 206 that I had repeatedly rolled in the game.

To unlock the better cars, you must score a certain number of points in each of the various races. The times required to win on gravel seemed surprisingly easy, but the asphalt rally was very challenging. For the Sahara race with the long straights, set up your car for top speed rather than for acceleration, and you can make up a lot of time.

The pace notes do get to be a bit monotonous after a while.

Try reading the review at GameSpy.

Am i the only guy that loved this game?? Try ShadowMan. My fave PC game of all time. A good 40 hours of play in it. Black An White has some nice touches too if ur into (kinda) strategy games. American McGee's Alice is real nice too. They're all a few years old but still damn good IMHO.

One contender I've found to Starcraft is Total Annihilation. 5 years old, and still a great RTS. The graphics aren't that bad either, since they were quite cutting edge at the time. Total A still makes my rommate and I stay up later than we should...

TA is still to this day the most enjoyable rts I've ever played. No other rts comes close to the goodness of that game.

Disciples (the first one)
Best Strategy/RPG game ever made.
It's good for about 80 hours worth of play if you get the Gold Edition, since it comes with a ton of extra missions. It also includes the editor they used to make the game so you can make your own missions. It's really easy to use.
