So yeah.. that LBP dynamic theme is 2.99 - bought it anyway and yeah, it's neat as all hell. the general ui updates are very clean - they changed the power on symphony music thou :(

dual audio out works nicely, don't remember who wanted that, but you can actually turn it on and set it in the audio options now.

edit: I am slightly disappointed that you can't get sock lad to jump by shaking the controller or something :\

Sure. :D I didn't think to turn it on this morning to get updated. :(

Yeah, I find the "what's new" thing kind of annoying - it shows 3 recent PSN store items, 3 last-played games and...something else, couldn't find the pattern there. Meh. I like some of the other things that are coming.

How did you turn off the What's New default? Do you have to hide that channel altogether?

Probably got complaints from SDTV users. Why you'd buy a current-gen console and use it with an SDTV is beyond me. :p

The best thing for me though is just how QUIET this thing is. You can only hear noise about 1 foot away, and it's the faint noise of a fan. I am very happy with this especially. Overall I am very happy with the Slim and I look forward to installing 3.0 tonight!

People talk about how loud the PS3 Classic is, my 80gig that I got the day of the price drop makes virtually no noise at all. Is this a characteristic of the older gen PS3s, or am I just not as sensitive to it?

I have a feeling it's a characteristic of some backwards-compatible models, because my 40GB (no BC) is dead silent.

My BC 20 gb unit is very quiet when playing movies or at idle, and only gets a touch louder when playing games for extended periods of time. So, I'm not sure that's an accurate statement.

It's accurate for one anecdote (which is why my statement said "some") and not for another. It is certainly not accurate for the blanket statement that you made:

You wrote:
the BC models had a fan that kicked in high gear after 10 - 15 minutes and it NEVER slowed down.

Hypothetically you could have wrote:
My BC model had a fan that kicked in high gear after 10 - 15 minutes and it NEVER slowed down.

Probably more accurate.

edit: ACK! No way to change "wrote" to be something else. "You could have written" can't be done because then it bcomes "You could have written wrote". Whoops.

I have an 80 gig model where sometimes the fan kicks into a high gear, but usually if I just restart it, the fan calms down.

I really hate the playstation store being plastered all over the xmb.

Me either, I'm just playing a bunch of games with no trophy support in the first place.

The achievements and trophies for cross-platform games match, so if they're set up incidentally (like finishing a level on a certain difficulty, or something simlar) I'm bound to get them eventually. Anything online i never get beacuse I'm a hermit.

I'm glad I haven't upgraded firmware yet. Think I'll stick with whatever the last one was. 3.00 doesn't offer any interesting features IMO anyway.

Apparently there are reports of the 3.0 firmware causing controllers to stop working. That blows.

=Edit=
Some people have said that 3.0 makes Uncharted unplayable, along with a slew of other problems. I know that developers have deadlines to meet, but how extensive was their internal and beta testing of this firmware? It seems like Sony screwed the pooch on this one. Hopefully it won't take long for them to fix everything.

The only reason I have any trophies is because my girlfriend and I played Little Big Planet like crazy when it came out. It's one of two co-op games we own for PS3.

Guess I won't be upgrading to 3.0 yet.

I don't understand how you avoid trophies, I keep raking them in for random crap on Uncharted and Batman and MGS4.

MGS4 has trophies?

Well, I'm pretty sure I got a couple in the intro mission for picking up gear and shooting people and stuff. Don't have time to turn on the PS3 right now though.

Sorry to confuse you then; they're sort of blurring together.

I'd also like to nominate Arkham Asylum as best PS3 game (except for Rock Band!): it doesn't make me shoot people! Hurrah! I really like Uncharted except there are these long and annoying sections where I have to hide behind cover and then push a button and laboriously use an inch-long joystick to aim at people's heads. If I wanted to shoot people I'd use a mouse and keyboard like God intended. Which looks like it's going to make enjoying MGS4 really hard on me. :(

I loved Uncharted and hated MGS4. So who knows?

Quit aiming for headshots in Uncharted. The real fun is the run-and-gun action, or the grenades, or peppering foes with copious amounts of bullets from the AK/M4/MP-40. There's plenty of ammo (on Easy and Normal, anyway) so let 'em have it.

BTW, thumbsticks grow on you. I never thought they would, but....here I am. Is Mouse + WASD better? Most certainly. Is it required to enjoy a FPS? Nope.

How do you run 'n gun when changing your view by 90 degrees takes as long as running across a medium-sized room full of baddies? Is there an auto-aim I should be turning on?

I dunno, you just do. Don't know how far you are in the game, but it's pretty much required when you get to the levels where you find out what happened to the Spaniards....

Methinks you just need to spend more time getting used to thumbsticks...

Heh, don't feel bad...my first exposure to thumbsticks was Resistance: Fall of Man. I think I died about a million times. But, when it was over, I had become pretty proficient.

The trophies/achievements for completing a level or defeating a boss are just plain lame. It's stuff that you just have to do if you want to progress in the game. These trophies shouldn't exist. It's like having a graduation ceremony for kindergarten. :)
