I've never seen another person even mention tribes vengeance. I played the hell out of that game, and years later i still can't figure out why it wasn't more popular than it was

If you played the game, you should have some insight into what happened. Not that it was a bad game, but the developers dropped support when the game needed another patch. It's been a while since the outrage, but I think there was a bunch of cheating exploits that needed fixed. TV was another victim from the mass-production game factory that we have going on. Instead of supporting the customers like they should have done, or even released source code, they just totally dropped the game and pretended it didn't exist literally months after release. Fans were pissed.

On March 23, 2005 it was announced that Vivendi Universal games were ceasing all support for the game, beginning with the termination of the 1.1 version update. This disappointed many members of the Tribes community who had been anticipating the release. In a January, 2006 interview, in response to suggestions of a falling out between VU games and Irrational, Ken Levine commented:[1]

...This falling out with VUG is some kind of Jedi mind trick, man. We just finished an expansion pack [for SWAT 4] for them, and it went as smooth as cream cheese. With Tribes, we did a patch, and for whatever reason they decided not to release it.

on the Tribes: Vengeance message board, which was posted last week, a representative from VU's marketing department stated: "Development on the previously announced Tribes: Vengeance 1.1 update has been cancelled. No further updates to Tribes: Vengeance are planned."

Irrational's sci-fi shooter for the PC hadn't seen a proper patch since its release in October, causing its fans to become restless. The post was met with the protests of upset gamers desperate for an update, many of whom felt betrayed by the decision.

One gamer, who goes by the handle of "Notman," directed disgust at VUG on the same message board: "From what I see, people were waiting for the game to move past beta level. So yes, I'm mad. There is no game to move to that will offer what the Tribes series offers. I'm going to play Tribes 2 for what little time it has left. Since you won't fix the update server issue, that you broke, no new people will be joining it. So eventually it will just die."

The game is still playable, just not ready for mass use. Oversimplified, cheaters ruined it, but it might not be a problem now.

I know I'm way late to this thread, but I'm shocked and horrified that no one has mentioned Killing Floor. I just got it as a Christmas gift, and it's great monster-slaughtering fun.

Also, a big +1 to both Left 4 Dead games and Team Fortress 2. Those three games make it into my top 4 for fave video games ever (along with Diablo 2 and in no particular order). Steam loves to run sales around the holidays, so watch for good deals on these and have yourself a Merry Killing Christmas!

It's a bit old... but have you played Thief: Deadly Shadows? (It's not really a shooter... compared to everything else being talked about).
Garrett can't climb ladders unless "VSynch" is turned on.

After finding that little tidbit in the Steam forums, I also found instructions for fixing the screen resolution, texture pack and sounds:

*Face palm* How did I forget about that game? I loved that game! I know it didn't have a huge following, but I ended up in the 50ish something for total score in Canada. Seeing as how I'm not very good at FPS multiplayer, that meant something.

Oh, and here's a game that hasn't been mentioned: Chaser. Think the video game version of Total Recall. I really enjoyed it and remember it being quite challenging.
